Legal Sea Foods - 7th Street
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker. A bipartisan favorite, we have occupied the nation’s capital since 1995, anchored across from the Verizon Center and around the corner from the International Spy Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Chinatown.
Make waves at our racetrack-shaped bar or sup on seafood underneath the hull-like ceiling in our restaurant’s main dining room. Either way, be presidential and order a cup of our New England Clam Chowder; it’s been served at every Inauguration since 1981. Other accolades include being named “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” in a nationwide poll by USA Today (2013).

This place is horrible!!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meals, one member of our group has a food allergy and our server and the kitchen staff were terrific and very careful with her meal. The crab cakes were as delicious as always.
We have been to Legal Seafood in several cities and we always enjoy it. We went to this location while on a trip to DC. It was close to our hotel. We had the clam chowder and it was amazing as usual. We had a greek salad that was good but nothing special. We shared a fried seafood platter. The restaurant did a nice job of splitting it for us. However, the calamari was over cooked. The fish was ok but not outstanding as we expect. The shrimp and scallops were good. Overall, just not at the usual level we expect from Legal. Our server was very good and attentive.
Good food good drinks. Noisy, even after we moved away from the kitchen. Found myself eating fast. Should have changed restaurants for a quiet meal.
Great dining experience. Bartenders were great and the food was excellent.
My wife and I started with the lite clam chowder which is better than the heavy New England or Manhattan versions. We then each got the seafood assortment which included three pieces of fish plus scallops and shrimp. My wife got mashed sweets and spinach which she enjoyed. I got the seaweed salad and crab stuffed baked potato. The potato needed some more crab but other than that I also enjoyed my meal. We got the chocolate pudding cake for dessert and it was outstanding, rich and flavorful with chocolate pudding. We're had the flourless chocolate cake at other restaurants and this was much tastier. A very enjoyable meal which will bring us back when we are in the area.
Salad and entrees were excellent. Bar drinks so so. Bread had to be requested and then was skimpy.
PROS: Seated at reserved time, and greeted by waitress immediately. Food and drinks were excellent.
Cons: Slightly noisy and crowded. One of our meals arrived at least 10 minutes after the other which meant we technically ate our meals separately. Waitress never asked about refreshing drinks during the meal and seemed to be in a rush to get us the check.
Went for the Oryster Festival. They didn't have all the choices but we made due with the options theu had.
Always a great meal. Had the mixed grill and is a real value. Had fresh oysters and they were delicious. The staff was very attentive and gave us the appropriate attention without hovering. Great wine list.
Awful. Service was awful- waiter brought out rice for my dinner before the salad. Food was really sub-par. Bland and uninteresting. Really poor value.
Ok... Was fun.
My husband and I were on a business trip in D.C. and looked up the reviews for this restaurant. We were not disappointed. The lumpy crab dip was delicious!
My friend and I have dietary restrictions and are limited in what we could eat. Legal Sea Foods made sure they accommodated whatever we required. Our waiter, Andrew, was phenomenal and made sure we were taken care of really well. We will definitely come back!
Everything was very good. Very enjoyable meal.
Legal Seafood, as the name implies, is an excellent choice for fresh seafood. I particularly recommend going in happy hour, when the raw bar is half price and drinks are discounted. Go for the oysters and clams on the half-shell and you will leave happy.
Excellent Seafood the Crab Cakes we the best I have had, the service was great also.
The wait staff and food were exceptional!! Everything about our meals was outstanding and we will definitely be coming back regularly.
Wish I would have read the poor reviews before going, looks like others had issue with the red snapper as I did. It was the worst fish dish I’ve ever had and they should remove it from the menu. My wife’s lobster was fine, but the spinach and cheese covered broccoli were barely warm and uneatable. Now I understand why it was easy to get a table at the last minute there on a Friday night. To many other good seafood joints in the area so steer clear of this one.
We booked this restaurant per a suggestion from family and the great reviews on TripAdvisor prior to arriving in DC. We actually arrived early and they were able to seat us. In a great location across from Capital One Arena. It was not a bad walk from our hotel either. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I enjoyed the New England Clam Chowder and then the Legal’s Signature Crab Cake Combo...absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. My husband enjoyed the Seafood Casserole. The Key Lime Pie was amazing as well. Highly recommend this restaurant!
Service was slow. Took 15 minutes after seating to be acknowledged by server. Service was just ok after that. You can do better.
My dish was very salty and I didn’t finish the dish. When the waiter asked how was the dish I explained I couldn’t eat it due the high level of salt, the manager wouldn’t take it off the bill. Disappointing!!
Crab cakes are to die for
Great food - Crab cakes - Louisiana Catfish - Calamari spicy - lemonade
I like seafood and what better place to get it than Legal Seafoods? Because there are so few locations in the DMV, I only get to treat myself three or four times a year, but a business lunch in the Gallery Place area gave me the opportunity I'd been waiting for. I wasn't disappointed. The service was great and the seating gave us a good opportunity to talk business intermixed with constant praise for the food. Of the four of us, only I found the main course less than five-stars. My go-to at Legal Seafoods is fried clams. Unfortunately, they weren't as juicy as the ones I'd had in Massachusetts a couple of months ago, but location and time of the year may have accounted for my disappointment. Actually, I could have skipped everything but the dessert because my not-so-secret reason for choosing this restaurant was the desert I and one of my guests ordered: a Chocolate Mousse that has no sugar added. It did not disappoint. For those of us who must avoid sugar, it did not disappoint. Everyone of us said we'd come back again.
Great dinner everything tasted amazing.
Always my favorite place when visiting DC. It’s in the heart of what’s happening in the area!
Food was good and service was friendly.
Service was good, food was very good. Drinks at the bar were ourstanding.
I’ve been going to legal Sea Food for years and I always enjoyed my dining and service. Tonight however I had a different experience, my waitress Raven was very rude and condescending. I ordered a hot tea, which she brought to me 15 minutes later with no sweetener or spoon and walked away as I was trying to ask her for those things. My fiancé finally got her attention and asked her would she please bring the sweetener and the spoon, she sighed and said “OK” by the time she returned our appetizers had arrived and my hot water was cold. I let it go and we enjoyed our appetizers and entrées. I couldn’t finish my entrée and asked Raven for a to go container. Raven returned with two tiny containers, I told her it was not possible for the amount of food that I had left over would fit into that tiny containers. Raven stood there with the containers dangling from her hand and saying in a condescending tone “this is all we have.” I stated to her I find that strange, what is a person supposed to do if they have a large portion left over. Raven stated “I don’t know” as she was standing there with the boxes dangling in my face. I asked her may I please see the manager, she looked at me and Sighed and walked away. Minutes later she returned with two large containers and stated the manager found them and drop them on the table. I was blown away that this type of person would be working for legal Sea Food!.,
It was ok. Nothing special sadly. The food was ok and our waiter was a bit slow.
Probably the best seafood place in town in the moderate price range. Seafood is fresh and perfectly grilled, and sides are tasty. Really recommended for seafflood lovers.
Seafood was great and perfectly cooked. Got a grilled salmon with crab meat baked potato and spinach. Salmon was tender and tasty, as the sides. The restaurant is very stilish and just next door to the National Portrait Gallery.
Great Food. Helpful staff. Fantastic lobster. Good wine list
We’ve eaten at several Legal Seafood restaurants in Boston, first time here in DC,and happy to say this restaurant is as good as its Boston peers!Superb fresh seafood, great service, great value and pleasant ambience-the rare combination of excellent food and reasonable prices. You can’t go wrong with Legal Seafood!
Great food nice environment and very good service. Great spot for a nice dinner in DC
The crab cake is always a hit and Nadeem provides great customer service.
Food tasted great. Unfortunately my son, who is diagnosed celiac, ordered his food gluten free, got sick after eating his meal. The waiter said he made sure everything was gluten free, but it was not. Would definitely not recommend for those who are gluten free.
Johnnie is the best waiter! He consulted with the chef on my dietary restrictions and relayed them to me as well. The chef was clear that I should not eat a specific dish that I would have ordered! Johnnie was really great! Thanks for a great dining experience! I was by myself and appreciated his extra attention to detail. He is one of the best waiters ever and I eat out a lot! I love legal sea foods!
