About Legal Oysteria
Legal Oysteria is a casual neighborhood restaurant serving coastal Italian-style seafood. Executive Chef Rich Vellante developed a menu based on the food he cooks at home for family and friends.
Legal Oysteria’s menu showcases the freshness and purity of its seafood offerings and other ingredients. Preparations are simple and authentic. A brick oven (with pizza oven and rotisserie) informs the menu. There are options for those who choose to table share or prefer more traditional coursed dining. Our bar program was designed to complement the cuisine. By tradition, an osteria is casual, comfortable and accessible and Legal Oysteria aspires to afford that same experience.
We are located along the Freedom Trail, overlooking City Square Park, and close to landmarks in Charlestown, including the USS Constitution Museum and Bunker Hill Monument. We are also in walking distance to the TD Garden.

Legal Oysteria Ratings and Reviews
Good option for nice dinner in Charlestown. Unfortunately, our waitress was quite slow and inexperienced. It took her 15 minutes to come over to ask for drinks. Later, she read from the menu what the oyster selections were. She was slow to refill drinks, seemed overall disinterested. This made the actual dining experience not great.
Do not let the idea of a local chain sway you, Legal is the best seafood in town. The Oysteria is hardly just oysters, but fantastic large fresh fish dishes, pasta and a large wine list. Tha ambiance is perfect for the neighborhood and food type. We went to celebrate the birth of our baby boy and they staff went the extra mile. We will be regulars.
All around terrific.
Great food, server and ambiance. Staff could not be sweeter. Chef came to our table and was lovely. warm and sophisticated atmosphere (not easy to get both). Our 5th or 6th time here, and like the last times, it was a great experience. Need to head back just to dine and watch a game at the bar!
Shout out to Colin and Alex who are wonderful!!!
Legal Oysteria is in the neighborhood and we have been before and been happy with it. It is not a “fine dining” establishment but is upscale-casual with a large bar, televisions, as well as banquet seating. Our meal last night was disappointing in so many ways. Our group of four was greeted and seated promptly by the welcoming host and hostess. The problems then fell into two categories: Service and food. The service was not good. Our server was very slow to get back to us after bringing a cocktail to one member of the group. We were deciding on wine and it took 10-15 minutes for her to return to take the wine order. By that time we were also quite hungry and ready to place our food order. The restaurant was NOT busy at all. She did not seem familiar with the wine menu and had to come over and look at the wine we were ordering and then copy it down. It was not an issue of pronunciation on our part. When the (white) wine was brought to the table she then proceeded to pour the wine into LARGE red wine glasses - some of the largest we had ever seen - at probably close to 8 oz a pour. We were a bit shocked! She proceeded to tell us that small wine glasses are used for those who order wine-by-the-glass and large wine glasses for those who order a bottle. One can connect the sales and profit dots from there. Refills of water were either slow or not forthcoming. Main courses appeared when we were still eating first courses; one diner was asked to move his empty first course plate himself so the server could set down the main. Seriously? Of the food, the spaghetti squash appetizer had way too much going on, including too much nutmeg. The pizza crust was not crisp; swordfish was okay; tuna was great. With all of the dining options in Boston, given the issues we encountered and the overall quality of the food, a return trip is really not warranted as we do not see the value. Not bitter; just wouldn’t bother to return.
We were visiting Boston and decided to try this Legals. We have eaten at many other locations. This restaurant was very small but very busy. The bar was completely filled and all the tables were filled by the time we left. The waitress was extremely busy but managed to make sure we had great service and were not ignored. I had the clam linguini which was excellent with lots of fresh clams. Not overly flavored and not bland.
We enjoyed a lovely meal with excellent wine and service. I did notice that this particular Legal does not offer as many gluten free choices as others do; in particular the gluten free chowder and rolls that are a favorite.
I had a friend in town and we needed a lunch/brunch situation. i checked on open table and from there we found legal osteria. it's a half mile from my house . over we went and had a delicious breakfast: eggs/ hash browns / toast. and a glass of wine and bloody mary. the waitress, Sabrina, was awesome. very informative. we had a lovely brunch and continued out day. Have been here for dinner and their dinner menu is awesome.
We have been eating here for several months (mostly on Saturdays). We have found the atmosphere, the service, the food, and the fellow customers to be outstanding. We can't say enough about the service staff and especially the manager. They are always welcoming, accommodating, efficient and above all really friendly not just business friendly. This restaurant is very family friendly. While we have no children it is very nice to see families with young children (all very well behaved) eating together and interacting with staff and fellow customers. The menu is excellent and the chief is very receptive to cooking the entries "your way". The Oysteria is a tremendous addition to Charlestown and Boston. It is only a few minutes walk to "The Garden", the U.S. Navy Yard, and the many other historic sites of Boston and Charlestown. Prices are reasonable, food is terrific, staff are wonderful, patrons are friendly-go and find out for yourself. You will not be disappointed.
Good place. Seems like more of a typical lunch spot given the neighborhood. The menu was a little limited but the options they had were all good. Where the name of the restaurant is Oysteria I expected more oyster options? But, they did have great Oysters!
I did expect a few more seafood options, for example the really wasn't any lobster to be had, and you're literally a block away from the ocean so for Boston, that's surprising. But the service was excellent the ambience was great, the restaurant appears to be brand-new. This is a nice little place if you want to duck and grab dinner with a date. Which is what we did before we went to a concert at the TD Garden which is a very short walk down the road. The other area options appear to be mostly tavern in Legal Oysteria is a bit more upscale.
The atmosphere was great but the food was lackluster. I had the linguine and clams and the linguini was over cooked as were the clams...almost as if they came out of a can but stayed too long on the grill. There wasn't even much sauce/wine in the dish to accompany the pasta. The swordfish my date had was overcooked and extremely salty (caesar salad with swordfish). The ambience, place and service was great but the food left something to be desired. The meatball was good as were the fresh oysters but the other dishes were not. I'm hoping we just had an off night /unlucky night with the food prep as we will continue to try other dishes there.
