Food was very good. The Wine list is a bit high. The wedge salad was not a wedge and was small. The main course was good and large. Desert was not great. How hard is it to have a good desert?
We have dined here numerous times in the past. On this visit, there was a considerable decline in the quality of food.
Great for going to the theater. The servers were very attentive!
Had a delicious dinner with good service. It is a great spot for a pre-theater dinner!
Excellent experience. Food and service exceeded our expectations. Will definitely come back
Always delicious, beautifully presented and fresh. Love dining here before the theater
Excellent service. could not believe the difference from before the remodel. Food was great...
Food was pricey but was excellent. I would recommend and go back.
We went prior to seeing a show at Segestrom. The food, service and proximity to the theater were excellent.
They have changed the menu. Too expensive and not enough choices
Service was poor
This new Leatherby's is wonderful! A vast improvement from its predecessor. The new ambiance, menu...all lovely. The Diver Scallops were the best I have ever had. Also we ordered the Filet which was cooked to absolute perfection. A perfect Pre /Post Theatre Go TO!!!!
The remodeled Leatherby's is very nice: beautiful and relaxing. The food is fantastic, if a bit pricey. In our party of 5, we had a combination of meats, fish, and sides, and all were top of the line. Our only disappointment was the service. Constantly-empty water glasses. Waiter running away before we can make a request. Waiting 15 minutes to order another glass of wine. Having to track someone down to get the bill. Given the excellent food, it's sad to see the staff frantically running around, unable to sufficiently attend to guests. They need to make some adjustments.
We are season ticket holders and have dined at Leatherby's for years prior to every show. After the recent remodel the prices have doubled and the food is overpriced for the quality. Now everything is a la carte which in the food service industry means that you are getting ripped off. The side dishes are priced for 2 to 3 people so if you don't want to share a side dish then someone is stuck paying for an overpriced side dish. Sorry, but you can't take it to go because you are going to the theatre afterwards. Won't eat there again. Service is great, but the food prices are crazy and the food isn't that great.
New menu is not an improvement :(. It was nothing special
Fun experience! Delicious food! Perfect dinner before the Theater or Symphony. Leatherby's is relatively new so I was hesitant to book, but we had Symphony tickets for midweek so this was the most convenient choice. We were not disappointed. We will be back!
This is our first visit after LCR's recent remodel. While the food is still spectacular, we were seriously underwhelmed by the service. LCR does a single dinner seating each night to coincide with performances at the Segerstrom Center (where they are located). We don't know if our waiter was overwhelmed or just distracted, but service was slow and not up to their usual standard (had to practically tackle the waiter for a drink refill, waiter did not let us know about that night's special, had to shout the last request on our dinner order as he turned away, etc.).
The food is great (even though the menu is now 100% ala carte) and we will be back to LCR, but we hope to have a better overall dining experience next time.
Disappointing. We’d been here many times, this was first (and last) time since the makeover. Trying to present themselves as a steak house, but falls well short of virtually all others. Ordered my steak rare plus. But waiter advised that we couldn’t do that, had to be rare or medium rare. Steak came out medium. How can you call yourself a high end steak house and not let customers order how they want it cooked. And then to significantly over cook made it even worse.
Waiter was okay, but kitchen timing was horrible. We weren’t half done with our drinks when salad came. Half thru salad when entree came. They promised poppers that never came. We were given lame excuse that others ordered double and triple servings. Then when my wife asked again while eating our entree, he announced that they deep sixed them, and there would be no more that night. And that was before 7pm.
Got a bill for $194 for 2 for bad food and bad service. Grrrr!!
Food average ; steaks came out warm ,not hot.
overall underwhelming experience. Convenience to Arts Center is its strongest asset
Great waiter!Nice plating of food.
Outstanding food and wine list. Easy in and out to our 7:30 show. No rush. Perfect for the Performing Arts Center
A lovely meal before the pops concert.
The only disappointment was that our filet was in the cool side when it arrived to the table. But the steak was delicious.
New decor is pleasant. Service needs some polishing. Food is well prepared but the tropical dessert was rather strange
Now very expensive and all ala carte...the wonderful risotto is gone....
Probably will not return as our order was screwed up both on the salad (brought beets instead of Cesaer)and the entree (brought scallops instead of salmon)! Also, we didn't order dessert because service was so slow from having to correct the entree that we didn't want to be late for the performance in Segerstrom Hall.
We were served Caesar salad, filet mignon, au gratin potatoes, asparagus, and popups. The serving size and taste were perfect. The restaurant has recently been renovated and has a very good open feeling. Rick was our server and was very efficient. The staff was very friendly.
First time back since they remodeled, although it has a similar feel. We continue to love the ambiance and the ability to enjoy a fine meal and conversation without having to struggle to be heard over noise, background music, and loud diners (OK, OK, so we might be getting older and a little crotchety!).
The overall experience was very good, although not quite a 5 star for reasons stated. Our starters were excellent (cauliflower soup and shrimp cocktail) although the cocktail sauce was at least a 6-alarm. A warning there would have been nice. Our entrees were similarly quite good (especially my salmon with a honey and spice glaze). My wife's sea bass was good but the preparation was very plain; expected just a bit more pizzazz. The service was generally friendly and attentive. Our only 'concern' was that after our bill was given to us, the server disappeared for 15 minutes. Not that we were in a rush to leave - the espresso was also very good - but it always bothers me a tad to have my credit card just sitting there for time on end. Probably just a personal foible.
Soooo....close to a 5 star dining experience, with just a few slight misses along the way. We certainly plan to return and encourage others to try Cafe Rouge for their next 'special' dinner (but watch out for that cocktail sauce!)
Poor service. Overpriced for just okay food. Would not go there again.
I realize you are paying some for convenience (i.e., being able to walk to the Segerstrom center for your show), BUT, the quality of food for the price has fallen. We’ve eaten here in the past and had a wonderful meal. But now they are operating like a steakhouse, where the protein is a la carte and everything is a “side”. That is similar to mastros and capital grille, and Leatherby’s price point is similar to those places, BUT the quality is not the same. My sea bass was bland, served plain with a touch of butter, my husbands steak was cold upon delivery. Another on our table ordered the brick chicken, but it was dry and uninspired. The side Mac n chz was good, but the portion for family style was tiny, same with the carrots. So, bottom line there are better quality options for the same price point in the south coast plaza area. Service was top notch!
Nice place to enjoy dinner before the show.
Service was excellent. From the bartender to support staff to the main server, all personnel were very polite, friendly and professional. Food was outstanding. A little pricey, but worth it. Will definitely return.
Horrible experience....tried once before before theater...not improved. Service is rude. Food passable. Never again....
It was a wonderful experience except they need more waiters
Was not impressed with either the new menu nor, the higher prices. The food was so so and service inattentive. I don't think we will be back after years of dining there prior to the SCR theater performances.
Salmon over cooked. Popovers good and nice touch. Scallops good. Menu unexciting. Service okay and pleasant, but a little distracted. Lovely room.
The new menu was awesome and so was everything we ordered.
Used to love this place for pre- theater dinning; they use to have a fantastic pre-fixe menu of gourmet selections with or without wine pairings and very cognizant of the time frame for theater. Unfortunately the format is all changed--menu is everything individually priced (over-priced), giant expensive meat selections that you obviously cannot take home if going to the theater, and no vegetarian meal selection, and nothing innovative like previously (except the beet salad which was the only thing I would recommend for interesting and delicious). I went on a Sunday before Jersey Boys 4:45 reservations for 6:30 show, and although seated on time, did not get dinner until 6:10--very inefficient waiter service despite the prior efficiencies with crowds. Food selections were average tasting with a couple very good. Overall not worth the price, and if you choose a 3 course meal you'll never get it in time. No dessert on the menu and we would not have had time anyway. Prior pre-fixe included dessert. Definitely not like it use to be with everything perfect. Sorry to see the changes, disappointed in new format and menu. although the updated decor is beautiful.
Great food at Leatherby's they always have something different to experience. We love coming there before the Theatre.
Post theater date. Walking distance from South Coast Repertory and Segerstrom. Excellent food and ambience. We loved the updated look!!
(1) A la carte menu doesn't work in this setting. Chef should be able to design a complete entre'e and still offer extra side plates.
(2) Suggest you advise the server to stop referring to us as "you guys".
(3) Matre d' was very helpful.
Way over priced for what we got. Did was good but not great. Wine pouring was very stingy. Too expensive to be mediocre. Location is great for theater and decor is very nice.
