Leatherby's Cafe Rouge
I would never go again. I told the server we had to be out for the theatre in one hour and ten minutes. We did not get a cold appetizer for 45 minutes, and the entree was served ten minutes before we had to leave. Whatever good there was in the restaurant ws spoiled by the kitchen . Jay Martin
Lovely setting. Fine food, small portions. Good service. Rather expensive
Not at all impressed with food and service. Mother’s Day brunch was not a good experience for the price.
Unfortunately, they became overwhelmed with the Mother’s Day pre-theater crowd. We were off to a pleasant and timely start with drinks and appetizers but then everything came to a crashing halt. By the time we finally received our entrees we had to cancel dessert due to the time crunch. To be fair, they did give us a $30 credit for the backup in the kitchen and the wait staff was very apologetic. We have been before and may well go again as it is so convenient to the Segerstrom, but we were a little disappointed by this misstep on their part as they are certainly used to dealing with a full house trying to make curtain time. Just not sure what happened this time as it was a special limited menu which should’ve been fairly straightforward to produce. Oh, and they also ran out of ice cream!
We went for Mother’s Day before a 1pm show. Our server knew we were heading to the show. Nonetheless the service was unbelievably slow and we ended up rushing through our entrees and desserts (it was a prix fixe menu, which wasn’t mentioned anywhere on their website or on opentable prior to booking). We still barely got to the show on time and my husband was brought the wrong entree entirely. Our server half-apologized for the mix-up by simply reminding us that she hadn’t taken our original order... which was true, but that happened because she came (10-15 min after we were seated), showed us the drink menu, and then left for another 15+ minutes. Another server noticed we’d been there a while and so came over to check, and ended up taking our order. To make it “right” they brought my husband his actual entree... after they brought the check, which he didn’t have time to eat because we had to get to the show. They still charged us full price, too. The only consolation was the manager gave us a little card to use at the concession stand at the show for drinks, but we’re all dieting and only one of our group of four is even drinking right now, so that didn’t do us a whole lot of good. At least there was a gesture. In total the meal took over an hour and a half and we were still incredibly rushed at the end.
Very slow service. Had a play to go to at 7:30 pm. Arrived at 5:40 pm. Had to ask for the bill to barely get out on time at 7:25 pm.
Leatherby's never lets me down. Sometimes I don't know what I'm more excited about, the Performing Arts Center show we are about to see or the dinner at Leatherby's beforehand!
This is my third dining experience at this restaurant and I’m sorry to say it kind of ruined the last two. Two of our party ordered the striped bass and it was one step removed from inedible. It was overcooked and not tasty at all. It was accompanied by diver scallops which tasted like commercial crab cakes over cooked. We had dinner before a concert, and when I got home I fixed myself another dinner. The other party in my group that had the same entrée felt this same way and left his plate half full. I won’t go back.
Exceptional food and great service. The Hawaiian Kampachi was off the charts delicious, and the duck entree was stellar.
Andy provided a flawless level of service.
Our waiter George and the lady manager were both wonderful!!!!!
My wife and I frequently eat at Leatherby's before shows at Segerstrom. The food is wonderful, the service and ambiance are excellent and you can't beat the convenience. I only wish the menu changed more frequently.
Always very enjoyable, wonderful, creative, constantly changing menu
Great food & ambience! Perfect for celebrating our 35th Wedding Anniversary! Very enjoyable.
We selected this restaurant due to proximity to Segerstrom before a show, a mistake we will not make again. We informed Leatherby's several days in advance it was a birthday celebration and we had a Vegan in our party. The manager who greeted us barely spoke. The hostess was friendly and helpful, the one bright spot in the entire meal, with a close second being the two assistants/busboys to the server, who were lovely. The restaurant was not to occupancy, nor did it become full during our pre-show visit. Our server rolled his eyes when our party member inquired what items have egg in them, after letting him know she was Vegan. He completely missed the mark with drink recommendations (his wine selection and speciality cocktail were both a miss, based on what we told him we liked) and generally he had a cordial, but obligatory attitude throughout the evening. The paltry Endive salad at $15 and $28 Vegan vegetable plate was barely edible, uninspired and comical and would have been considered a "side dish" at most fine restaurants. The salmon (their specialty) was okay, as was the starter soup and risotto. All three items were properly prepared and well seasoned, but nothing special to cause a discerning diner to return to this restaurant for any of these items. The quality of the food was "okay" and I would say this place is "fair", at best, considering there are fine dining options nearby to accommodate patrons before a show. We paid $190 (plus tip) for a party of 3 persons, which included an 8-year old and a Vegan. No mention was ever made of it being a birthday celebration or that we had let them know days in advance of a Vegan dining with us. Give yourself ample time before seeing a show to enjoy a fine dining experience elsewhere in the area, or pay the lofty fees for average cuisine at Leatherby's for the sake of convenience to the theater.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening there! We could have just been happy with our appetizers, I had the octopus, my wife had the chicken mousse (which was HEAVENLY), and we split the salad. For entrees, she had the salmon which was probably one of the best either of us had ever had. This is the only main dish I would order if I came back there. I had the steak, and it was extremely tender, but I didn't care for the sweet sauce that was over it. And at $42, I expected something more than 8 ounces. But it's a great place to go if you are seeing anything at Segerstrom's. The service was excellent, also. We would definitely come back.
We've been to Leathersby's before performances before and it was good. But this time not so much.
We shared the gem salad and whether it was the dressing or the cheese, I don't know, but though small we didn't finish it. My husband ordered the NY steak and it had a good deal of grizzly or unchewable bits. I had scallops and the preparation and presentation was Meh so although there were only three, I couldn't finish the dish. Dessert was OK.
The best part of the meal was our server, Jessica, who was very attentive and nice.
Food is delicious and beautifully presented. Servers are professional and prompt. Great for pre theater dining.
Flawless! Food, service, ambiance were a perfect blend to make this an absolutely fantastic dining experience!
Will rush back for a repeat event.
We have had outstanding meals at Leatherby's but Saturday night was a lackluster experience. Much too limited menu and overly priced. Our Little Gem Salads were average. Best thing was the Julia Child mousse. Frankly, we were disappointed.
A bit overpriced especially the pasta dish. If we’re going to pay $35-$40 for an entree, which we have at several places, we’ll typically pick the restaurant with exquisite ambiance - a great experience. We’ve found that the entree of many restaurants are over priced for the value.
Great place for dinner before a show at the Segerstrom complex. Smallish menu, good wine list, very personable and well conducted service with an immediate inquiry as to our show time. A great find.
Food was salty.
Beautiful. Best risotto that I have ever eaten, short ribs were melt in your mouth, desserts were fantastic and beautifully prepared. Fantastic experience. The staff were also wonderful. I can't recommend highly enough for a before show meal.
GREAT SERVICE AND GREAT FOOD... TIMELY PREPARATION AND SERVE TIME BEFORE THE THEATER. THANK YOU
Excellent food and service.
Celebrated friend’s birthday
Perfect place to go for a good meal in beautiful surroundings before an event in the performing centers. Professional, friendly and attentive service from Jessica and her co-workers. Appetizing plating and nice selection of menu and wine items. Definitely will return and will recommend. Open on EVENT days only. Service was quick and efficient, and the restaurant is a few steps away from event venues.
Beautiful environment. Good service.
Tasty food. I requested "easy on the salt" and it came as requested.
Stepping into the restaurant is a delight as one is greeting with graciousness and warmth.
The food is fabulous and beautifully presented. Tables are far enough apart that one can actually have a conversation which is rare today as most restaurants are noisy. Decor is new and yet elegant.
Location is perfect for attending performances at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
This is a restaurant I would come to even when not attending a performance at the center. One of my
all time favorites.
Everything about this place was amazing. Came here for Valentine’s Day and was not disappointed, the food was amazing. Their chef is phenomenal
Went for valentines day dinner. The food was good but not worth the cost.
A favorite choice of ours if we are going to the O.C. Performing Arts Center because it is delightfully close. We can get a delicious meal, great service and walk 3 minutes or less to the front door of the Center. More people should be aware of this convenience. They even validate our valet parking and, after the theater, our car is right in front of the door.
Possibly the best meal we've ever had I SoCal. Impeccable palette, wonderful chef. We'll definitely be back.
With a severe allergy to mushrooms, I notified the server and asked her to caution the chef of my allergy. I ordered the soup of the day and was told it was a lentil bean and the filet. The soup arrived and was loaded with mushrooms. Shocked, I called the server who acted very non challant. The soup was removed but I was fearful of eating the sauces served with the steak.
At the end of the meal the manager came over and offered to buy our beverages but proceeded to say that - “in their defense”- the kitchen gets very busy and I should understand that these things happen. I was appalled at the cavalier attitude about a food allergy and explained that if I had tasted the soup they would have been purchasing an ambulance ride and a whole lot more. He shifted slightly but simply didn’t seem to get it. Don’t go there is you have food sensitivities.
They were inadequately staffed for the pre theater rush
We had tickets to a 6:30 performance which the waiter confirmed. Seated with no problem, water and cocktails no problem, salad a little slow, entrees not out after a half hour after the salad. And the salmon and Brussels sprouts overcooked and way blackened. Poor execution and even poorer reason for the delay by the server. I will never come back.
The ambiance, service, drinks and meal were all outstanding!
Perfect place to eat before a performance!
The chef's special soup (carrot) was so flavorful and unusual and deliciously spiced.
I was hosting a guest on her birthday and had mentioned that when making my reservation. Was a bit disappointed that no special candle on a cookie or cake was offered. Of course, I didn't mention it so as not to embarrass my guest.
My husband and I had a pre-theater dinner at Cafe Rouge a few nights ago. It was terrific. The entire staff made us feel comfortable and welcome, they were especially careful about making sure we had plenty of time to get to the theater. My husband had soup, I had salad and we shared an entree and dessert. The amount was perfect and the food was delicious. We had had a very stressful day and from the moment we arrived at Cafe Rouge everything calmed down. Thank you for taking care of two frazzled seniors.
