Really good dinner. Waiter (Filipe?) was excellent. Service outstanding. I didn’t rate dinner higher because chicken was so very dry - I could barely cut it. I did not send it back as everything else was top notch. Great flavors. First time and will probably give it another try.
Le Desales is fabulous. Started with two very dry Grey Goose martinis crafted to perfection. Date and I shared a large appetizer which was a large cheese board embellished with cheese, sausage, ham, olives and to die for French bread. Having had a beef burger at several other notable DC French restaurants, I decide to order the Le Desales burger and compare...and the winner is the Le Desales burger! It was cooked medium rare, had a delightful fresh taste and was garnished with just enough condiments. My date settled for a curled salad, but sampled my burger and commented on its quality. Not our first visit and it certainly will not be the last.
Le DeSales? More like Le DeSaster!
Went to this place for brunch on Saturday. Other than 2 people sitting at the bar, the place was completely empty -- partly because of St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Notwithstanding the fact no one was there, the kitchen was super slow. We had to wait over half 45 minutes for our food, and it was a mess. The truffle fries were more oil than potatoes. They were so soaked in oil you could barely tell they were once fries. Death to fries by truffle oil was the name of the play. I asked for a medium burger, and it was past well done. It was basically carbonized. I was pleased that they did replace it and did a decent job, but the burger wasn't special even when cooked to the right temperature. I have more things to say about this but I'll stop now because I'm sure readers get the picture by now. I hope that the owners can get their act together and prevent this type of experiences from happening to other customers.
refreshing menu in its uniqueness. Food was prepared quickly and expertly. Follow the waitstaff's recommendations.
Food was great, appetizers, lamb main course, desserts all outstanding. I’d love it a little less noisy though!
Great service, good food. Beets appetizer and bavette excellent combo.
Excellent food, service and ambience.
Commendable experience. Server was friendly and accommodating. The lamb for two was the best ... excellent presentation with salad. Reminiscent of time spent in Belgium and France and I was reminded of dinner as an enjoyable , relaxing, and palate stimulating experience.
fantastic food, great surroundings, noisy at happy hour, quieter later.
We had such a beautiful night! Perfect setting and food was delicious (drinks too!) Service was attentive and accommodating. Such a cozy date night spot on a rainy night.
A lover of French food, Desales is near perfection. The location is a bit off the beaten path but well worth the parking challenge to dine there. We started off with two dry, dry, dry Grey Goose martinis with olives and a twist of lemon...perfectly crafted. Next a bonanza appetizer where we sampled the Pate, Roquerfort and parmesan cheese with bread and crackers. I had the cream of potato soup with sour cream that was to die for. My entrée was the pasta with rabbit and my date had an entire branzini fish. The entrees are garnished with fresh baby spinach and arugula which is healthy and also enhances the presentation. We topped off the evening with espresso and paid compliments to the chef as we departed. SUPERB!
The menu needs an editor. It says broccoli; they serve broccolini. They have branzino, but the menu neglects to tell you it's served whole. The pate says served with pickles; they mean pickled vegetables (we were expecting cornichons as is typical of pates/charcuterie plates). And also, they make no mention anywhere that it's designed to be shareable/small plates (and it's definitely not the right kind of cuisine for that). The food we got was fine... the restaurant just needs to tighten it up a little bit.
Nice meal at DeSales. Pickles are delicious. Duck Pate was somewhat greasy and not universally loved by our table. The entrees we tried (beef and lamb) were delicious (lamb was cooked a little less than how we specified and not steaming hot, but acceptable enough to not mention to waiter). Chocolate desert excellent and eaten in 10 seconds. Apple cake desert far too dense, we sampled one or two bites and left the rest. Excellent service. Waiter poured small complementary shots of after dinner drink (perhaps because he saw we didn't like the apple desert)? In any case, greatly appreciated and ended the night on a high note. We will definitely come back.
Happened upon this little gem after seeing a magic show at the Mayflower Hotel. The food and service were impeccable and this has become a new favorite!
Unexpected last minute pleasure! Incredibly knowledgeable wait staff regarding menu, etc. prompt, funny, friendly appropriate. Great food and service. We’ll definitely be back!
The food was terrific- except for the burned clafoutis I was served. I was rather surprised that it actually made its way out of the kitchen. I took a few bites and left the rest. When our server (finally) checked in with us, I told her it was badly charred and rubbery and just not edible. She muttered something about telling the chef. Our server was nice enough, but generally MIA during our visit. We had to flag her down several times to get water, forks, after dinner drinks. Maybe she was new?
A chef who makes fresh into exquisite
Loved this place! Great atmosphere, excellent food and service.
Lovely two-course lunch deal with wine made for a first rate friends' get together. Interesting French bistro menu with a good wine list and desserts. A real find just of Connecticut Avenue next door to the Mayflower Hotel.
Amazing ambiance, great food, and very friendly staff.
The food as so delicious and creative from the Craft Cocktail with Cognac, the sweat breads with shrimp to the cheese cake. Our waiter, Philippe was a charm. So knowledgeable about the menu and history of the Chef and offered lovely suggestions. I really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant. Reminded me a of NY city place. Very quaint and tastefully appointed. I sat in the bar area on a high top which offered a nice view of the entire area. I can't wait to go back and bring my friends!
Loved it. Great service. Helpful servers. Delectable food.
The service and food were exceptional!
Every bite was a taste treat. The wine that was recommended was also great.
It was a bit loud initially as there was a very large party at the bar, but after they cleared out, it was much more pleasant.
The mushroom side dish is a must!
New restaurant for us. We are foodies and regularly eat out trying new places. This is a new French “small plates” restaurant. The food was amazing and the service excellent. Each chosen dish had an array of flavors, was fresh and the staff was expert in helping us choose from the menu. My initial reaction to the seating and decor was negative. The ambiance is “casual” and our bench seats were small to the point of being ungracious with no personal space-good thing we’re relatively thin individuals. I was initially taken aback by the chairs, tables, etc but the food and service won me over and I began to “see past” my initial impression. In addition the wine selection is excellent and again our waiter helped us explore some new vintages. Overall I’d rank it high as yet another very good DC foodie place. We will be back.
The charcuterie board was excellent, the main dishes were delicious and perfectly prepared, but the dessert, an apple clafoutis, was a disappointment--too sweet, and too little fruit or even fruit flavor. Except for that, I would have given 5 stars.
We really enjoyed this place overall. Very comfortable atmosphere, creative food offerings, and pleasant staff. I had the veal sweetbread with prawns. The sweetbread was flavorless, but its surroundings were pretty tasty. The dish, as a whole, was tiny and unfulfilling (barely fit to be an appetizer, certainly not a meal). My wife had the beef "Bavette" which was excellent in every way. For dessert we shared the clafoutis which was delicious but could not satisfy a craving for something sweet. Service was friendly but "distant" given how small the place is. We drank only water for about 15 minutes before some bread and our wine was delivered, and over the course about 2 hours, our server did not ask how we were doing. We still left with a good feeling and would certainly give this place another try.
Food -nice presentation and flavorful (pork chops and the Chicken entree) but above all I had a great server..Julie ..she made my dining experience very enjoyable ..she recommended the Lamb for two for my next visit ... will be back very soon!!!
What a wonderful restaurant. It was so pretty and our waitress was perfect and the food and wine top notch. Perfect
There were four of us and one was a 2 month old baby. They were so warm and embracing. Our server Julie was phenomenal. We ordered the Beef Bavette and Lobster.. Exceptional. We ordered a bottle of Malbec that was recommended by our server that was excellent. We stayed for two hours and were never rushed. I will be back in DC in February and definitely will be coming back. I highly recommend this restaurant for great food exceptional service and pleasant ambiance. Hats off to Le Desales a Class Act!!!
Excellent cooking classic with modern flare
We we’re 8 for lunch- and we were in a hurry as we had limited time
Our server was both delightful and helpful as she pointed out a Prix Fixe - two courses and a glass of wine- perfect.
It was my first time there and it was great. Nice decor, very pleasant staff. Chicken was great as was the brocolini. Fantastic Pinot noir. Highly recommended.
We went for dinner. The service was incredibly slow even though the restaurant was half empty. We never recieved dessert options but got tired of waiting. So we left. I have been for lunch and haven't had this problem before.
My husband and I had the prix fixe New Year's Eve four course dinner with wine pairings. Overall, the quality of the food and presentation were very good. The service was excellent. The bass I had as a second course was almost raw. I had read in another review that their fish was undercooked. I guess this is the preference of the chef. The wait staff should really ask the customer's preference. The wine pairings were perfect. I didn't care for the steam cake - it had consistency of polenta. But the sour cherries were amazing. The best dish for me was the duck foie gras with Christmas chutney and brioche - heavenly!
Great location; comfortable and welcoming dining room. Very untrendy (and wonderful) low noise level. Very good food; great service.
It was so pleasant to find a reasonably quiet place for dinner in crowded Washington DC.
The maitre de and servers were excellent, efficient, attentive, friendly but not intrusive e. Best the food was excellent, simple but inspired as well as quite reasonable. The wine list was large and the by the glass generous.
My new favorite spot for business lunches or dinners. The croquet monsieur is quite authentic. The deviled eggs with salad are to die for. Cannot wait to return!
Highly recommended! Great pre-meal bar drinks and bartender was busy but engaging. Lots of interesting selections on menu and difficult to know what to order as it all sounds so good. Burrata starter was one of the best dishes we have had in a very long time. T-bone was cooked to perfection and more than enough for two. Good wine selection and a fair price. Can not wait to return.
Warm atmosphere, great food, fantastic service. Can't wait to return next time we visit DC.
The pâté is amazing! I didn’t know how pâté should taste until I had it at Le DeSales! Small snafu with the fact that they were closed for a private party, but I was able to make a reservation at the tail end of that window. Nonetheless, it was delicious once we got set up!
