Le Colonial is a truly delightful culinary experience. Like stepping into French Colonial Southeast Asia, this two-story restaurant, designed by Greg Jordan, consists of a main dining room with louvered wall panels, colorful tile floors, and vintage photos of Vietnam.View Private Dining Details

The food was spot-on delicious, however, my Summer Sunday visit was a lot quieter than I expected, after having been there for drinks a year prior. A year ago the upstairs was open, with a very vibrant bar scene. I was hoping for that this time, and was disappointed to find that the upstairs is closed for the Summer. The dining room downstairs was mostly filled with a neighborhood crowd, who in spite of the late hour, seemed best suited for an early bird special.
I will definitely go again in the Fall, hoping for a livelier ambiance. The food was very worthwhile, and I will be craving it obsessively until Fall!
Love this place--the house special (whole red snapper) is to die for. I was sad they were out of it on this particular night (!!) but the food was fine anyway. Vegetarians, however, should be forewarned: many of the veg alternatives on this menu, as well as the purely vegetable dishes, are a bit on the bland side. LC does a great job with their creature dishes, but if you're with a vegetarian, their tastebuds will surely get bored.
great service but food not as good as it used to be
Very pretty seating, nice menu selection, decent wine list. Food was good, with interesting choices & flavors. Ambience was prefect for an informal business dinner on a very hot night: service was attentive without being overbearing so we were able to have an enjoyable evening as well as serious conversation.
This is a return visit, the food was excellent and the atmosphere is very nice. If you arrive early you can go upstairs and have a drink and relaxe with nice conversation with your dinner guests. The food was excellent too love the mixture of cold and hot food with nice spices. Really worth a visit, check out their website.
I realized as I walked in the door that I'd been here 10+ years ago and thought it was wonderful then. I'm not sure why it slipped off my preferred restaurant list but it's back now. The decor brings you to a different time and place and the food is absolutely delicious. The have created a fusion menu what brings together a wide range of flavors, spices and textures. It was a treat and I recommend it very highly.
Like its San Francisco counterpart, Le Colonial in NYC is great. You feel in the french tropics, nice and warm. The duck and the beef were very tasteful and cooked to perfection with incredible sauces. Do not forget to have jazmín rice... So flavorful, it is a marvel for rice lovers.
Interesting food, wonderful atmosphere. Always delights and da pleasure. Thanks!
Enjoyed the food - fresh and flavorful. Service is very good. Went earlier on a Sunday, so it was quiet. Will definitely go back. My boyfriend loves the Bo Sate - sauteed filet mignon with roasted yams and string beans. The aubergine appetizer with sauteed crab and shrimp is a favorite as well.
Wonderful old world level of service, well prepared Vietnamese / Western menu items with surprising flavors.
We had a really great meal and experience at Le Colonial and look forward to returning. The food was quite delicious and we had very attentive service.
The restaurant is beautiful. Chairs were not very comfortable, but not a big deal.
nestor the waiter was wonderful. outstanding service.
Dependable, always a good meal. I took advice here and tried upstairs. If you are not young, stay downstairs, more comfortable. If you are looking for an "intimate" dinner, upstairs would be fine. Better waiter downstairs, upstairs guy was keen but weak on language. Downstairs the waiter skillfully prepared (deboned) our whole Red Snapper ( delicious). Asked the fellow upstairs to do it, he said it was already done, it wasn't ;(.
Just a wonderful experience. Delicious.
Very nice and good restaurant! Ramark: we got our main course right after our starter, which was a little too fast.
Excellent food, nice decor, friendly staff, yummy appetizers
Excellent service, food and ambiance. You really feel you are in the middle of Vietnam having dinner. We ordered many different appetizers and where astonished to conclude that they where all excellent. Entries are just as good. This is a must place to visit if you want to try something different. Will definitely be back for more.......
Lovely atmosphere that takes you back to Indochine. The meal was superb with subtle French Vietnamese flavors and good portions.
LeColonial is always great. Great food with diverse flavors, great service, interesting and fun decor. Very nice wine list. If you get there early, the bar upstairs makes you feel like you're in Southeast Asia. We were with some friends just back from a trip to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. They loved this restaurant.
My new favorite resturant in the city
once you walk in the door, you are transformed to another time and place..and leave NY outside.
great atmosphere and every staff member is so polite/respectful. great place!
Best thing about this restaurant is the ambience. The food was not very good--rolls tasted like the ones I buy in the supermarket for half the price.
I've been coming here for the past 10 years or so. It never disappoints.
We arrived when Le Colonial opened because we only had a little over an hour for dinner. The wait staff was attentive and professional. They were also very responsive to our time restraints. We started off with the Aubergines as an appetizer. The flavors of the eggplant, crab, and shrimp blended together perfectly, and the chili garlic sauce was just right. I had the Ca Chien Gung and my wife had the Bun So Diep. The salmon was crispy and cooked to perfection as were the lemongrss scallops and shrimp. The flavors are subtle but complex. This was our second trip to le Colonial, but certainly won't be the last!
This was truly a gem to find in Midtown. The service was absolutely outstanding - attentive staff and seamless presentation. We loved the lemongrass scallops although the duck left a little to be desired. Great wine selection. Overall this made for just a lovely Friday night date. We'll be back!
I found the bar area VERY DARK. I had a lot of trouble reading the drink menu and since I was meeting someone, I really want to read some paperwork and it was IMPOSSIBLE.
could do with a little more flavour in some dishes. A bit hit and miss depending on the dishes picked. The staff were excellent however. Service was first class and decor was nice.
This old warhorse still delivers yummy food-- the lacquered duck is a favorite-- with highly professional service in an evocative setting. With the explosion of Vietnamese options in NYC, it no longer seems cutting edge, but is a terrific choice, especially for an older crowd, in a tough dining neighborhood populated by sleazy pizza parlors or stodgy continental cuisine. Avoid the overly-sweet cocktails and opt for wine or beer.
My husband and I love Le Colonial. The maitre de and staff are always courtesy and the food is excellent. The atmosphere is pre Vietnam war and very romantic.
The monkfish Ca Bom is excellent!
The upstairs bar is quaint and romantic
Back again since very long time and was not to impressed.
A very charming spot with an atmosphere that transports you from the hurly-burly of throbbing Manhattan into a calmer, more gentile space and time.
Food very good. I'm a vegetarian and there were adequate treats for me. Thought the wok vegetables were the best I've had in quite some time.
Le Colonial has been a favorite of ours for so many years that I no longer count. Each time we go we are treated like good friends and the food and service just keep getting better. We dined Saturday night wth another couple and lingered over a long wonderful meal with good wine in a relaxed yet formal setting, rare to find in my home town NYC.
Excellent culinary experience. Great combination of Vietnamese flavors and serving elegance . Very good and accommodating service .
Delicious and wonderful service - very old world charm!
An excellent menu and great decor brings the diner to French colonial Vietnam with ease. A definite for foodies who enjoy asian cusine in an authentic and tasteful setting. A 5:45 PM reservation plus a short cab ride gets you to a Broadway evening show in time.
the restaurant interior is fabulous as is the food-
This longstandinding midtowner specializing in Franco-Vietnamese fare is perfect for a business dinner: convenient to office towers, quiet enough to talk over the deal, but energetic enough not to feel like a romantic date. On the other hand, romance seekers will love the belle époque-by-way-of-the-tropics decor. The food is satisfactory -- not the revelation it was back when Le Colonial was fresh. Service is functional, if not completely attentive. Slightly pricey for what you get (although average for the neighborhood), you won't even notice if the company is picking up the tab.
As always,1st class in all respects; decor, quality and taste of food, presentation and service. We dine there perhaps twice a year for special oocasions but the Maitre D makes you feel like you were there yesterday.
This was my first time dinning Le Colonial, my European friends were very happy about the wine list. The duck dinner with sticky rice was outstanding. The food is not over priced. I'd suggest they change the rug/runner on the stairs, it looked over used. Certain waiter's English isn't good enough, it effected service quality, but the food is delicious!!
