Le Colonial - Chicago Ratings and Reviews
I have Celiac's Disease and cannot have gluten. Le Colonial was FANTASTIC with allergies! So accommodating and didn't make me feel like an imposition at all!
You can also filter their menu online for certain dietary restrictions and they list what the changes are to the dish to make it GF.
I was very impressed with the service and on top of that, the food was delicious!!
Two thumbs up; we will be going back there!
I've been going to Le Colonial since it opened. I had my wedding rehearsal dinner there in 1998 and I still keep coming back! I love how they don't change a thing in their decor or menu and everything is consistently excellent with superb customer service. It also draws a well-mannered, well-dressed crowd of all ages.
We love this restaurant and chose it for our Anniversary dinner before a concert. We requested a table at the window and thoroughly enjoyed the people watching along the avenue. The food is always interesting and the choices will satisfy most any diner. The only negative was the placement of a loud party (only 3 people)directly behind me. What we hoped would be a romantic anniversary dinner turned into a woman on her cell talking about nothing and very loudly while trying to impress! She was actually seated closer than my wife! The host should be more considerate when placing these individuals/parties near a couple enjoying their own conversation and looking for a quiet time. There were many other tables available.
Arrived right after they opened on a Sunday at 11:30a, so no wait. The place is beautiful, very well appointed - classic, so we were concerned might be “too” casual. Nope, the host sat us no problem. Limited time, so we split the Shrimp stuffed beignet appetizer. Yes, shrimp stuffed beignet. Amazing. Three of us had the pho, one had the shrimp dumpling in clear broth. Incredible flavor. Best pho I’ve ever had, hands down. The...best. Authentic, fresh, depth and complex (the ox tail broth is money). Highly recommend.
Great food but the bar was a mess. I sat at the bar and had them make my drink three times and couldn't drink it any time. In the end they still charged me for it even though I walked away with the drink barely touched and just went to my table and ordered wine. The food was delicious but I wouldn't order a cocktail here again. Ridiculous!
Fantastic food and space. However, the service was not exactly what I was expecting. Our waitress seemed very uninterested in us right from the get-go. She didn't really explain much, acted like she didn't want to serve us, and didn't check in on us often. Once we arrived, we ordered some appetizers and cocktails and had to flag her down 10 minutes later to order our main dish. It seemed as if she thought the appetizers were our main dish! The most frustrating thing was that she was just giving this service to us. With the other tables by us, she spoke in a different tone of voice, checked back with the tables regularly, thoroughly explained their different options, etc. I'm not sure what her problem was with us - we were extremely polite, didn't ask for any special accommodations, thanked her (and the staff) for everything, and tipped well! It was disappointing, especially for an anniversary dinner. However, I'd still recommend this place for the food. It's worth trying!
This was our third time eating in Le Colonial and it did not disappoint. The food was exquisite and presented beautifully, the staff were very friendly. The subtle flavors and the perfectly matched ingredients provided a wonderful gastronomical experience. Will be back again when in Chicago.
Love this restaurant and think of it as a special place to celebrate a birthday or other special event. The ambiance is uniquely old Colonial Vietnamese. A bit tight and somewhat unkept but still charming. I did not like sitting on the upstairs enclosed balcony and prefer downstairs but nonetheless it was okay. Truly the food is what I most enjoy. The flavors are so different both one dish from another and from the flavors at other Asian restaurants. The curry chicken, sea bass and barbecue pork were each delicious and discreetly unique. I love going there with enough people to be able to share dishes. Portions are large and generous enough that three appetizers and three entrees were plenty for four adults. I have learned that not everyone shares my delight in this restaurant but I look forward to returning again snd again. So many more dishes to try.
we have eaten here many times. this time the food was outstanding, as was the service. our only complaint was that we were seated upstairs in a very dark location. had to use our cell phone flashlights to read the menu and eating was a bit of a visual challenge.
I really adore La Colonial because it's gorgeous, chic, with great food. It's now my favorite restaurant in Chicago because in total, it's perfect. The size is just right, I love Vietnamese food, and I felt like I was transported into the exotic ambiance of Vietnam.
The food was fantastic. If you’re a fan of Vietnamese food but want something with a little more atmosphere, this place is for you. The food is authentic and is what you can find at many hole in the walls. It’s presented better here though. The food reminds me of home.
The service was good, but not stellar. The servers felt cold and distant, rather than friendly and inviting.
