Le Colonial - Chicago Ratings and Reviews
Been coming here sporadically since it opened 20 years ago. Always good food and service. Nice bar upstairs if you can get a seat. Loved the entrees- filet mignon and Chilean sea bass dishes. Appetizers just okay - chewy ribs and a monk fish salad thing that we wouldn't get again.
The dishes are great for sharing so you can try many things.
This was my fourth visit to Le Colonial. My first was years ago, right after it opened. The quality of the food has declined drastically since then. I always order the same dish: a stir fry mixed vegetable/tofu recipe. It was very high quality the first two times I ordered it. Lots of succulent chunks of tofu with perfectly prepared vegetables. On this most recent occasion, I had to hunt to find two thin strips of bland tofu. The vegetables were soggy and overdone. I miss the old Le Colonial.
My wife and I came here for dinner on Sunday. The service was well tailored and professional. The space was comfy and well decorated. At the time the noise level was fairly quiet yet there still seemed to be a positive energy coming from the service staff. Our server was succinct and still appeared to enjoy her duties. Would gladly come again and recommend to friends and family
This isn't the first time that I've sat down enjoyed the exquisite food that Le Colonial has to offer. The staff is professional and friendly; I feel as though they take the time to make the dining experience the best as possible. Even better their manners and professionalism to not rush customers or interrupt when in conversation is more than appreciated.
I know I will be returning here. The atmosphere, the food, the hospitality are just a few of the reasons why this is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Chicago.
We made a reservation to celebrate my husband’s 40the birthday - I mentioned this to the host when making the reservation and while they called me to reconfirm the reservation a day before my visit.
Birthday or the occasion was never acknowledged, the SVG martini was terrible - had one sip and let my waiter know that Indus not like it - his response, shrugs his shoulders - did not want to remake the drink.
Food was mediocre at best.
The food was very good once we got it. The front desk did not not act on our vegetarian request, however, our server was very thoughtful to our needs once we told him. He gave us their vegan menu, which is great that they have, but it would have been better if we had been given that menu when we were first seated by the hostess.
Room is beautiful but uncomfortably crowded with tables packed so close together that the staff has to continually push their way through chairs. Knocking into customers seemed to be something of a game.
Other than the appetizers, the food was so so and not anywhere close to being worth the high prices.
Overall a big disappointment.
I have been coming back to Le Colonial for 5 or 6 years now, and have not once had an experience that was less than great. From the head of the house (who has been with them for 25 years), to the talented wait staff who accommodate every need and know the menu forwards and backwards, to the kitchen staff (the head of which who has been there more than 30 years!!), this team HAS IT DOWN and executes with such incredible consistency and seemingly effortless grace and hospitality. What an experience. Amazing, romantic space as well. Easily one of my favorite restaurants. I will be back!
I've been wanting to eat here for years and I finally had the opportunity when an out-of-town colleague requested something that is "classic Chicago" with unique food. It hit both marks. Our waiter was amazing and our table up front against the windows, lower level, was perfect. Love the Vietnamese décor. Thank you!
We were visiting Chicago for our anniversary. This is as a terrific loop location. The ambiance was lovely and the French-Vietnamese cuisine was unusual and delightful. The only downside of our experience was our waitress who seemed visibly annoyed either by our presence or her job. She was efficient but joyless and unwelcoming. We appreciated the fast service although we couldn't help but feel she couldn't get us out of there fast enough. No lingering over our anniversary drinks. I would recommend this restaurant for the location and gate and just hope that you get a happier Wait person.
My wife and I went to Le Colonial for our anniversary dinner during our trip to Chicago. We were a bit early, but got seated promptly upstairs. The decor and ambiance is very good and it is quiet which we appreciated. As for the food, we had the pho which was fantastic. We stuck to a few appetizers of which the tuna tartar and the monkfish was very good. We did not quite care for the grilled baby back ribs. Too dry. The dessert was pretty good. Overall, a good experience and we would go back just for the pho!
There were a few things that really put me off about this dining experience. The first and most important is that we were sat at a table that you literally had to move out of the way to sit at and we were way too close to each other. At a table that was too small to accommodate us. This was especially annoying since we arrived at 5pm and the restaurant was empty with plenty of seating that was much better than where we were put. Our original server came to the table once, then never came back and was replaced with someone else (who actually did do a good job). Finally, I truly believe this restaurant is overpriced for the type of meal served. I had an Asian beef dish that was $30 and quite a small portion, and as it was very good, it was a dish that was really not worth more than $15-20 max. Overall, I think this restaurant is very beautiful, and I would recommend it for the ambiance, but I will not be returning.
Absolutely amazing. I am from the Chicago area and have since moved away. Every time I'm anywhere near Rush St I make sure to eat here. From the staple menu items to the chef's selection, this place always over delivers. I most recently brought my girlfriend here and blew her mind. The staff paid special attention to everything and made sure her first experience would be unforgettable. They truly earned another lifetime customer. Thank you.
I have Celiac's Disease and cannot have gluten. Le Colonial was FANTASTIC with allergies! So accommodating and didn't make me feel like an imposition at all!
You can also filter their menu online for certain dietary restrictions and they list what the changes are to the dish to make it GF.
I was very impressed with the service and on top of that, the food was delicious!!
Two thumbs up; we will be going back there!
