What Insiders Are Saying
A formal French-Vietnamense restaurant in the Gold Coast that's not the coolest place in town but is quiet, well-run, and good.
Authentic Vietnamese/colonial French setting. Good tasty balance in flavor and fresh ingredients.
The BEST Oxtail soup I have ever had. Service is always impeccable.
We had dinner here one year ago and it was one of the best meals I have ever had. We were looking forward to coming back. But this year the experience was disappointing. The food was just OK, and the service was decent but they forgot my dessert. They also had issues with their grill so some items on the menu were not available. The prices are too high for average experience. We won't be back.
It used to be a fantastic place, with the move the chef and staff looked broken and the food was anything but special. It became a really expensive Chinese restaurant without anything special so bad.
The table an atmosphere felt cramped. Service was moderate. Food was disappointing compared to our earlier experiences with this restaurant. Not sure if I’ll go back.
My sister had been raving about this place for years. It did not disappoint. Very good food, good wine list, good service. A trip to Chicago will include a visit to this place!
Light entrees packed with flavor. Great wines too!👊🏼👊🏼
Always a wonderful dining experience.
Terrific food and ambiance! The shrimp beignets are not to be missed!
I went to Le Colonial Chicago. The food was delicious and fresh, not heavy. It was so good that my wife and I returned two days later with one of her colleagues who loved it as well. We had beef rolled in a very light noodle with fresh greens and we had shrimp with asparagus and whole red snapper with a lightly sweet sauce that was delightful. I wish we could take this restaurant back to Bloomington, Indiana with us.
Very dark atmosphere. Food was very good and service was great. Would go back.
Fabulous dining experience!
It was really disappointing to get a total of three items only for $75, which includes dessert. Frankly that amount to $25 per item which is ridiculous. In the very least, in addition to an appetizer, soup and salad should have been served.
We enjoyed the creative vegan options at our New Year's Eve celebration. Never has tofu tasted this good. This restaurant has THE recipe for tofu! Excellent service as well. Our table was placed next to a wall with a chilly downdraft, but this was a minor complaint in an overall lovely experience.
We have been to Le Colonial numerous times; we even had our wedding party dinner here. Every single time has been wonderful with great service, couteous people, delicious food, and a beautiful atmosphere. However, we had booked a New Years Eve late lunch scheduled at 2:45. We were bringing our guests from Scotland here for a special meal, and we had talked up the food and restaurant so much and were extremely excited to share one of our favorite restaurants with them. Unfortunately when we arrived at 2:45, the
maître d' rudely told us that we had 15 minutes to order because the kitchen was closing at 3. When I told him we had called and booked the special New Years Eve menu, he told me I was wrong and that I was getting a better deal ordering from the regular menu anyways. The entire experience went downhill from there. Our waiter was rushing us, the appetizers came out tepid at best, and it turned out to be the worst experience ever. Having spent over $200 for the four us, I would expect friendly and welcoming service. I’ve never ever been disappointed in the food, but it was mediocre at best. The maître d' was rude and so unprofessional, and I was actually embarrassed by the whole experience beginning to end. I wish I would have gotten his name because Le Colonial customers deserve so much better than him! Next time we have guests from out of town, we won’t even consider Le Colonial. We had a phenomenal experience at Monteverde where the chef, Sarah Grueneberg, personally delivered our desserts to the table and met our out of town guests, all because I asked her to. We had an amazing experience at Piccolo Sogno as well. Le Colonial was a huge disappointment, and clearly Chicago has so much better to offer than this restaurant!
I had wonderful time with my boyfrined! The food was AMAZING! the sever was nice and friendly!
IT was my first time to visit! I will love to recommend all my friend!
We had a great time. Yet, I would not recommend sitting on the balacony. It is too loud. Other tables dominated and it was difficult having a conversation at our two top.
Trout was awesome!
Just wonderful. Our server was fabulous. Meal was paced perfectly. Loved the salmon dish and trout in banana leaves.
It will be very sad to see this restaurant close in a few weeks. I know they will he moving nearby but it won’t be the same. They and I have been there since 1996. Food and service was exceptional. Samuel is an excellent server. He is helpful, prompt, nice, positive, and likes his job. He’s an excellent representative of the restaurant.
Told staff about my cashew allergy and received a meal with cashews added to it. Makes me unsure if they cooked my plate separate from dishes made with cashews. Food was delicious, despite the stomach cramping after. Probably won’t eat there again, but I wish I could
Absolutely freezing because our table was close to the front door. Every time the door opened we were shaking. Other guests at nearby tables just as irate. Not an enjoyable time.
Great location, nice house on two floors with character. The food was just a bit above average or vietnam restaurant in the US. The service was OK but lacked knowledge. Price was reasonable for downtown Chicago
One of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. Food and service are always consistent. Can’t wait to see new location!
Amazing, great service and awesome ambiance!!
For 20 years, the Asian-French fusion flavors, presentation, selection and experience continues to impress,
We had seabass, pork and duck. We have had seabass at every visit and it is a star on the menu. Pork was also outstanding. Cocktails are also amazing, and service is always memorable. This is a do not miss restaurant in Chicago for a special night out.
Summer on the balcony is a romantic experience.
One of my favorite places in Chicago. Great food in a nice atmosphere. They are moving soon to a new location around the corner, so it will be fun to check out what's new.
Really disappointing experience. Way too many tables crammed in here. Not comfortable to have a conversation. Some food forgotten. No beer list.
Recommend you request a 2nd floor table by the window with a view (if you're able to climb stairs). Generous portions. Great quality. Vegetarian and gluten free options available.
Always amazing food. The chef is great at keeping the same taste and flavor over these years. My wife and I had our engagement party here, over 12 years ago and the taste, flavor, were exactly the same. Looking forward to coming back again... for SURE!!!
Le Colonial has long been one of our Chicago faves. Tonight was different, our waiter acted like he could care less about us, our dinner and our evening out. We asked about food recommendation, none, “we have had the same menu for years”, he served our wine then spent the rest of the time waiting on 5 young ladies. My wife had salmon which was very undercooked. No one ever checked on our food or asked us if we wanted second drinks. Our bill was dropped off, our romantic evening out was over in 1 hour 10 minutes. Maybe it’s good you are moving, maybe it’s time for a new Waite staff?
Food honestly tasted like something you could have gotten from a grocery store. Both of the main dishes my table received (Mi do bien, and the salmon) completely lacked any kind of taste. We also got dessert hoping that this would at least be good, sadly it was not. We ordered the creme brûlée which was cold and partially frozen... In addition to the food not tasting good at all the wait staff rushed our table along far too quickly. There was a server who would stare down our table and as soon as we set the silverware down he immediately took our plates. He was also standing uncomfortably close to our table the entire time. Would never recommend anyone to go here. Better off going to a local mom and pop shop, guarantee their food would have flavor for a quarter of the price.
Rafael is the best!! Great customer service:)
Food is amazing and always good!!
Had a wonderful meal at Le Colonial whilst Christmas Shopping downtown. The service and food always excellent. Will return again and again. Ellen Lloyd
LeColonial has been great for years. For whatever reason it seems to be less attentive to its customers and food had gone from great to soso.
I had a pho and a spring roll which should be less than thirty dollars total and my credit card is saying they charged 61 WHICH MEANS THEY TIPPED THEMSELVES WITH ANOTHER THIRTY DOLLARS. THIS WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN CHICAGO AND I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AND AM NOT GOING THERE FOR ANY REASON.
Delicious! Every main was large enough to share, but nobody wanted to! Go heavy on the appetizers because they're wonderful. The dining room was a little cramped and the food could have been spicier, but all in all Le Colonial is an excellent choice for healthier meals during a day of Chicago shopping. They had plenty of vegetarian options to select from and were very accommodating to make dishes vegan.
