Le Chat Noir Ratings and Reviews
The food is traditional French cooking, prepared very well. Service is attentive without being too much so. Wine list is appropriate to the food but neither fine taste nor expensive. In Paris, where I used to live, this would be a fine neighborhood place but would not rate tourist attention.
My wife and I greatly enjoyed our Valentines Day dinner (a day early Feb.13th)! Its very comfortable and a friendly place to have a meal. Food was very good as it always is for each and every course. An interesting wine list were we always manage to find a hidden gem. It made for a most enjoyable dining experience.
It's not close enough for us to be a neighborhood restaurant - wish it were, because we always enjoy dining here. There's a wide range of choices - hits this time were the crevettes de Calanques (six or seven very tasty shrimp atop "brik" and the sweetbreads main course (w/ polenta, celery, and carrot); the basic steak-frites was also excellent. There's also a nicely varied wine list, though if you really can't find something you like, we noted that some diners were BYO - is there a deal there? Service was excellent and friendly.
We went for crepes. My friend wanted to order a custom crepe and the waiter said she could not. So she had boullabaise instead. My crepe was great - lamb sausage, apples and cranberries. The nutella dessert crepe was very small and seemed to have been warmed up in the microwave rather than freshly made. I like the room, and the french bread is delicious.
I never leave reviews but this place was not good and ruined a special occasion. Went here on the last day of restaurant week. The menu was slightly different than what was online. Our server was brand new (told us 1st day) but was still very nice and capable- hated that the upper management seemed to be helicoptering her performance. Told us they didn't have a beer that was on the menu and tried to blame our waitress for saying the wrong thing. Learned they actually did have it after we ordered something else. The food was terrible. Ordered fish which tasted old and fishy and coq au vin which was just bland and slimy. Dessert was fine but mouse tasted like made out of a package. Crape was just fine. Will definitely not be eating here again.
We have been going to La Chat Noir for years and always enjoyed it understanding a haughty French attitude was simply part of the charm. This past Sunday we wanted a special place to take our grandson who had just achieved something wonderful that morning. The service was abominable. We got (after 15 mins)cold red wine and warm champagne without bubbles. the waitress forgot our order twice finally came back and said there was no quiche Lorraine. We waited 45 minutes for our meal and had to beg for bread and water. No mention of the celebration — why ask if you don’t care. Never again. This place has lost us.
Great venue. Main dining area appears to be a covered area built-out into the sidewalk providing a quaint bistro-like setting. Service was attentive. Food was presented well, but the 2 steaks ordered by our group had the appearance that they were recently defrosted.
I took a friend to brunch for her long-past birthday. It was her first visit to Chat Noir; I go fairly often. The food was excellent and the overall experience relaxing and positive. Our service, however, was the abrupt and largely absent, the worst by far I’d had there. This is unusual for Chat Noir. It appeared to be our particular waiter who won’t last long if that behavior continues.
I went with a long time friend who was visiting DC. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy. Our first interaction with the server was when he arrrived at the table and said 'Are you ready to order?' and when we hesitated he walked off. I ordered the Beef Normandy. I received a chicken dish. The meals were ordinary, overly creamy, and expensive.
I strongly recommend that you avoid Le Chat Noir.
I love this restaurant. It is a wonderful place for many reasons. The food is wonderful - from the standards to the more inventive, all the ingredients are beautifully woven to create dishes that are both rewarding and comforting, and the bread is amazing! It is a great place to catch up with friends as it is cozy and quiet without feeling like everyone is listening to your every word. In addition, the service was great. Our waiter was attentive yet patient with our pace. This is the true neighborhood gem that deserves more recognition than it seems to get.
I took my older mother to this restaurant on her visit to DC. I was expecting a nice neighborhood gem though was put off by the host who was quite rude and screwed up our bill; he added an additional item (and did not include items on the fixed price menu). What was most insulting is that he accosted my mother with a $3.00 bill as she left the establishment when I was in the bathroom. Note I left a tip of $20 on and $80 bill. I wish in retrospect I would have left it in cash so that I could have easily removed it. The food was very salty like my feelings when I departed.
The only good thing about Le Chat Noir is the bus boys . The food took an hour to arrive and was cold. The onion soup had no onions. The crepe dessert was still frozen in the middle and the crepe so tough the other diner had to use a knife. The restaurant had run out of the wine we had ordered but the server didn't let us know that for about 35 minutes. All in all a sad disappointment for what used to be a nice neighborhood establishment.
Pleasant cozy spot. Good service. Reasonable prices. Nice place for a catch-up lunch with friends. Tables spaced appropriately, lower noise level, attentive but unintrusive service. However, food was a bit disappointing. Atlantique omelet was a huge mass of plain bland eggs with a few tiny bit of salmon. No herbs or any hint of flavoring was noticeable. Salad, decent but ordinary. This was a very limited food sampling so will give another try or teo as all other features of the place are welcoming.
