food is always reliable good here; service is excellent; charming environs
A quaint corner restaurant with authentic French charm and cuisine. I will admit that as a table of "one" reserved within 30 minutes seemed to create a little stir as it was quite busy. The staff was very pleasant and welcoming. It did take awhile to be waited on, which was noticed by the owner/manager. He was sure to get my order and my food arrived with speed. The food: quite good as I selected the duck. Not the duck as presented on the menu, but they had an alternative. As I browsed about, the steak frites seemed to steal the senses and made me second guess my decision. I would definitely dine again.
A real gem! Great place. We will definitely be going back very soon.
Le Chat Noir is tiny. My friend and I last dined there two years ago. The food and service were as good as I remembered them! For our hors d’oeuvres, we split the Saumon fume: Norwegian smoked salmon, lemon, chives crème fraiche dip & a garnish. For my friend’s plat de résistance, she had Les Crevettes: pan seared jumbo shrimp, asparagus brunoise, truffle risotto with Chablis garlic sauce & black pearl roe. I went with Bijoux de boeuf au poivre: grilled beef tenderloin, grilled asparagus & potatoes Pont Neuf with a black pepper corn sauce. We completed our feast with caramelized apple flambée made with Calvados. It was all absolutely delicious!
ALWAYS RELIABLE NEIGHBORHOOD GEM A wonderful French Bistro with authentic cuisine well-prepared. Menu has considerable range in the choices. Portions are reasonable rather than overwhelming which allows one to have room for dessert without overeating. We always enjoy our visits to this long-established gem.
The Tuesday night half price wines by the bottle makes this the destination of choice on days when I cannot prepare a French dinner at home due to work commitments. The regular menu is solid. There are often enticing specials.
Though your menu was limited on Mother's Day, we found tasty dishes (salmon and chicken).
And the upstairs room was nice and very quiet. We all enjoyed our dinner.
It was our first wedding anniversary. After our waitress served the appetizers, she disappeared for the rest of the meal. We waited one hour, ten minutes for the entre. During this time, we had no water, the complementary champagne was never served, a waiter served hot French bread to tables around us, but ignored us. Not just our waitress, but waiters, concierge, and manager all walked around us constantly, no one noticed we had nothing for 50 minutes, finally we asked for the champagne then waited another 20 minutes for the entre. Most clueless staff I have experienced. We paid, and saw no one as we walked out. Never again, Le Chat Noir.
We arrived a few minutes early for our 1pm Sunday Mothers' Day reservation. While our table wasn't immediately ready, the owner / maître d' gave us another table right away. The menu selection had something for everyone - poisson, boeuf, volaille - the lamb stew was perfect - could have been in Paris for lunch. This is my "go to" neighborhood restaurant. Servers work very hard to please. You won't be disappointed.
Fabulous as ALWAYS. !!!
Service was very slow. Ambiance is odd. Food is excellent and well priced.
The food was fantastic!
My guest from Boulder, CO, had requested either French or Lebanese food for this special occasion celebrating a big promotion. I've enjoyed Le Chat Noir before but was very disappointed in this week's experience, especially the quality of the food. A friend of mine, who eats out frequently, said that she feels Le Chat Noir has declined recently. Say it isn't so!
Very Paris Bistro atmosphere. Beouf Bourguignon amazing depth of flavor and Bouillabaisse loaded with seafood and flavor. Can't wait to go back
The food was outstanding my compliments to the chef! The service left a little to be desired, however they were very busy and we will still give them another chance because the food was delicious!
The food was delicious, but our server was terrible – dismissive and rude, and not in a sort-of-charming French waiter kind of way. A shame since the other staff members seemed attentive and pleasant.
I doubt we’ll return.
Excellent ambiance. Food was fabulous! Would absolutely go back for special occasions. Romantic setting. Some live jazz could make for a wonderful wine bar experience without the noisy distractions of larger places in the the thick of things. A real gem.
Le Chat Noir has always been our go-to neighborhood French bistro. Unfortunately this time our experience was less than satisfactory. The place was packed (good for the restaurant) but sadly understaffed with only 3 workers, and that included the maître d' who pitched in to help serve & clear tables. Our waitress was scurrying around her many tables (10?) .. not a relaxing environment for a Sunday dinner!
The lamb osso buco was tough & chewy with little flavor. The mahi mahi was unimpressive thawed from its previous frozen state. The last positive was a good bottle of Medoc.
Always pleased with the food and service at this neighborhood restaurant. I also appreciated my server’s recommendation of a wine to match my menu selection.
Excellent entrees, nice drink and wine selection, superb desserts!
Consider us old fashioned, but we have discovered that we prefer coming back to favorite neighborhood restaurants like Chat Noir rather than branching out to new unknown venues. This restaurant is not five star or perfect, but it has all that we want on a Saturday night. It's consistent in it's great food, wine, service, and neighborhood ambiance.
Love this place. Reliable French bistro. Great food and no one’s rushing you out. Highly recommend...
We have frequented the restaurant for years but recently have seen a decline.
We were last there for a birthday celebration and it was disappointing. The service was consistently and unnecessarily slow and a little rude.
The food was adequate but not up to their former standard.
We have always liked the restaurant but may not go back anytime soon.
Dining out for life
People have complained about the service. We had no trouble although we did have an early dinner. Food is good.
Probably short-staffed as the service, aside from water refills, was weak, and the food--when it finally arrived--was not worth waiting for.
This is a fun restaurant where you can easily park in the neighborhood. Service is fabulous. Food really delicious French.
Excellent crepes! This is a pleasant and charming place for any occasion.
Food and service were both excellent. It became a little hard to hear as the place filled up.
Excellent as always. The Raclette was perfect for a cold evening.
As ususal, the meals were delicious. The salads were large and topped with a light, flavorful dressing. The steak frites was tender, cooked exactly to our specification, and the fries were nearly perfect.
The restaurant was closed so we had to find another place That was disappointed
Nice atmosphere, good service, good bread, salad, and decaf capuccino. A little disappointed in the crepe fourree.
Small and quiet with a good selection of food at reasonable prices. The appetizer salad had a delicious Dijon vinaigrette dressing. I was pleasantly surprised at the portion I received on the tenderloin au poive. I expected two small medallions and got three, which provided a snack as a take-home. My wife got cod and loved it. Our server recommended a delicious crepe for dessert and we were not disappointed. Would recommend. Appears to appeal to an “older” crowd.
I go to Le Chat Noir often. Today was a off day.. Some one in the Kitchen must have called I sick as the service was slow.
We had not been to Le Chat Noir for some time, only because we live outside the city. We had been there for a holiday meal during the winter and enjoyed our meal, the amibiance, and warm feel of the restaurant and the staff. It was great to walk in and see the same people and receive the same warm welcome. We were meeting our son, who lives in Glover Park. The company that he works for also provides the breada. It was a great meal, the service is excellant and the food was wonderful. It's on the list to go back more frequently.
This is such a special place that I hate to tell anybody about it!
Food was excellent as usual, but some of the new servers need to be more attentive to when customers are ready to order each course or refresh drinks. We sat inside but it was difficult to get the attention of anyone after we ordered the main course. Inexcusable in such a small space.
Close your eyes and think you’re in the 6th Arrondissment - my favorite French bistro in DC!
