We have LOVED the Chat Noir and go there often, but last Sunday was not good. Are they under new management? the OJ wasn't fresh, the mimosas lousy as a result, the eggs benedict not good. the crepe with nutela was cold. We were so disappointed
Good food at good prices.
They need to fix how they serve wine by the glass.
To the credit of the restaurant they instantly changed our server. Perhaps it was a server issue.
We were seated at our table on time but except for water refills, were ignored, until I asked for a a server after 20 minutes. A small annoyance. After this, everything went very well. Food was delicious and our server couldn't have been nicer. We'll go back....
This remains my favorite restaurant in DC. The food is traditional French cooking and is uniformally well-prepared. The service is very accommodating and attentive.
Consistently good, cozy and tasty food. Chat Noir has been around for many years and we have never been disappointed. It may not be the most avant guard, but the atmosphere is homey and the people are very nice. We had the Sunday brunch which was an excellent value.
Always enjoyable, great food, excellent pairing options with their wines. Like being in a Paris bistro. Good value.
My entree was a bit salty for my taste but enjoyed the cuisine otherwise. Service was very good.
This is a very nice french bistro. The prices are reasonable for DC and the House wine was excellent. Great service. We really liked the restaurant - it is not fancy, more of a neighborhood place.
We like this restaurant. It has a French atmosphere, the ambience is informal, and the noise level is low so conversation is possible. We chose specials from the daily menu: stuffed bell peppers for starters, a concoction of venison meat in phyllo for the main course, and poire belle hélène for desert. All very good. The restaurant offers a wide selection of wines at reasonable prices (although you can splurge if you wish). We chose a bottle of Lirac to complement our meal. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Recommended.
Truly a neighborhood gem that never disappoints!
Very pleasant environment, outstanding food attentive staff. This is a small low key restaurant that combines, food, presentation, environment and service that could match most celebrity chef high powered places. Easy to access and on street parking in a pleasant neighborhood. I would suggest for a celebration or a quiet business meeting as well as just a nice neighborhood night out.
We haven’t been here for ages. So nice to rediscover it!
Food was good, not excellent because the lamp I had was hard to chew and the service was slow because they didn't have enough people working but I liked it in general, the food is not bad.
As always, the food combinations--especially on their holiday specials--are uniquely creative, delicious and beautifully presented. Right now it's our #1 restaurant choice.
The food is traditional French cooking, prepared very well. Service is attentive without being too much so. Wine list is appropriate to the food but neither fine taste nor expensive. In Paris, where I used to live, this would be a fine neighborhood place but would not rate tourist attention.
My wife and I greatly enjoyed our Valentines Day dinner (a day early Feb.13th)! Its very comfortable and a friendly place to have a meal. Food was very good as it always is for each and every course. An interesting wine list were we always manage to find a hidden gem. It made for a most enjoyable dining experience.
We have liked Le Chat Noir in the past, but this time the music was awful and too loud.
It's not close enough for us to be a neighborhood restaurant - wish it were, because we always enjoy dining here. There's a wide range of choices - hits this time were the crevettes de Calanques (six or seven very tasty shrimp atop "brik" and the sweetbreads main course (w/ polenta, celery, and carrot); the basic steak-frites was also excellent. There's also a nicely varied wine list, though if you really can't find something you like, we noted that some diners were BYO - is there a deal there? Service was excellent and friendly.
2nd time we've been-food was delicious! Comfortable, neighbor hood kind of ambience. Will go back!
The food and atmosphere, as always, were great. We are always pleased with our dining experience.
Excellent food, presentation and service. The dessert trio was fantastic.
We went for crepes. My friend wanted to order a custom crepe and the waiter said she could not. So she had boullabaise instead. My crepe was great - lamb sausage, apples and cranberries. The nutella dessert crepe was very small and seemed to have been warmed up in the microwave rather than freshly made. I like the room, and the french bread is delicious.
This is a favorite restaurant and one we frequent. I recommend it to friends for its authentic French cuisine and friendly service and pleasant atmosphere.
The special mahi mahi was in a delicious sauce, but the amount of seafood was a bit spare. The snail appetizer was sadly thin on the butter sauce. The waiter was kind enough to send it back for more, but that resulted in tough, rubbery snails.
The shrimp appetizer with Dijon was very good, had the duck and my date had the venison and both were excellent. Felt the escargot was overcooked.
I never leave reviews but this place was not good and ruined a special occasion. Went here on the last day of restaurant week. The menu was slightly different than what was online. Our server was brand new (told us 1st day) but was still very nice and capable- hated that the upper management seemed to be helicoptering her performance. Told us they didn't have a beer that was on the menu and tried to blame our waitress for saying the wrong thing. Learned they actually did have it after we ordered something else. The food was terrible. Ordered fish which tasted old and fishy and coq au vin which was just bland and slimy. Dessert was fine but mouse tasted like made out of a package. Crape was just fine. Will definitely not be eating here again.
consistently tasty food , attentive service and good value
We have been going to La Chat Noir for years and always enjoyed it understanding a haughty French attitude was simply part of the charm. This past Sunday we wanted a special place to take our grandson who had just achieved something wonderful that morning. The service was abominable. We got (after 15 mins)cold red wine and warm champagne without bubbles. the waitress forgot our order twice finally came back and said there was no quiche Lorraine. We waited 45 minutes for our meal and had to beg for bread and water. No mention of the celebration — why ask if you don’t care. Never again. This place has lost us.
We hosted a friend who was a newcomer. Most excellent and wide-ranging selection for restaurant week. As regulars we were again pleased to enjoy our neighborhood favorite.
Great venue. Main dining area appears to be a covered area built-out into the sidewalk providing a quaint bistro-like setting. Service was attentive. Food was presented well, but the 2 steaks ordered by our group had the appearance that they were recently defrosted.
I took a friend to brunch for her long-past birthday. It was her first visit to Chat Noir; I go fairly often. The food was excellent and the overall experience relaxing and positive. Our service, however, was the abrupt and largely absent, the worst by far I’d had there. This is unusual for Chat Noir. It appeared to be our particular waiter who won’t last long if that behavior continues.
I went with a long time friend who was visiting DC. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy. Our first interaction with the server was when he arrrived at the table and said 'Are you ready to order?' and when we hesitated he walked off. I ordered the Beef Normandy. I received a chicken dish. The meals were ordinary, overly creamy, and expensive.
I strongly recommend that you avoid Le Chat Noir.
Chat Noir offers consistently good food and fabulous bread.
Exceptional food! (We've been there numerous times before, but this was the best!)
I love this restaurant. It is a wonderful place for many reasons. The food is wonderful - from the standards to the more inventive, all the ingredients are beautifully woven to create dishes that are both rewarding and comforting, and the bread is amazing! It is a great place to catch up with friends as it is cozy and quiet without feeling like everyone is listening to your every word. In addition, the service was great. Our waiter was attentive yet patient with our pace. This is the true neighborhood gem that deserves more recognition than it seems to get.
This restaurant is excellent and the food is authentic French Cuisine. Staff is efficient and very courteous. This is our third visit to this fine eatery and we hope to have many more in the future. You will not be disappointed.
I took my older mother to this restaurant on her visit to DC. I was expecting a nice neighborhood gem though was put off by the host who was quite rude and screwed up our bill; he added an additional item (and did not include items on the fixed price menu). What was most insulting is that he accosted my mother with a $3.00 bill as she left the establishment when I was in the bathroom. Note I left a tip of $20 on and $80 bill. I wish in retrospect I would have left it in cash so that I could have easily removed it. The food was very salty like my feelings when I departed.
The only good thing about Le Chat Noir is the bus boys . The food took an hour to arrive and was cold. The onion soup had no onions. The crepe dessert was still frozen in the middle and the crepe so tough the other diner had to use a knife. The restaurant had run out of the wine we had ordered but the server didn't let us know that for about 35 minutes. All in all a sad disappointment for what used to be a nice neighborhood establishment.
We always enjoy Chat Noir. It is very dependable in terms of quality. The customer service is exemplary.
Most enjoyable--and lovely food. The noise level, however, was a bit high given it was a Saturday night. I enjoy going to Chat Noir mostly for an early lunch when it is not so crowded--and the food is always good!
