Le Chat Noir Ratings and Reviews
I have enjoyed Le Chat Noir on many occasions. However, the food on my recent visit was inedible. The fish was overcooked and rubbery; the salad was stale and slimy; and the flavor pf everything was unappetizing. I didn't signal the waiter to come over, since I was intent on visiting with my friend, but he also didn't stop by to see how everything was until well after my friend had finished his dinner, so even though he then offered to bring me something else, there wouldn't have been time to eat it. I don't think I will go back any time soon.
Everyone's food arrived cold. Crepe starter was okay but not much flavor to any of the dishes other than the sauce for the frogs legs appetizer but the frogs legs themselves seemed to have been cooked separately and then put with the sauce. I had duck. My wife had the calves liver with prune and star anis sauce, she said that the liver and sauce were cold with little flavor and the liver was dried out.
I bought mineral water with gas and had it stored by the table in a wine bucket by the table to keep it cold but this did not stop the server from pouring tap water from a jug into my half full glass and destroying it. I gave my ruined water back and drew attention to the fact it was mineral water that they had just served me but they never offered to replace and just used more of my bottle to give me a new glass. 5 minutes later they attempted to pour more tap water into my mineral water but I stopped him in time.
We are English and have eaten in a lot of French restaurants in Europe and USA (including some around DC) and the food at this restaurant did not compare well.
Another lovely evening at Le Chat Noir. Wine tasting followed by a leisurely dinner. I always look forward to our visits. Food is great. Service is attentive and on point, but not intrusive.
The only problem is I want to go back the next night.
Thanks again for a great evening!
The Chat Noir has been a local gem for many years. It keeps a good quality menu and an authentic French cuisine and the wine list is good and reasonably priced . The service is very good.
Last Saturday we had dinner with friends.
The food was good but for one of the plates that was not in the specials of the day list, a fish in a puff pastry. It was ok, but the pastry was hard. the rest of the choices were vey good.
We come here every 2 months or so. Our server wasn’t the friendliest chap.— the questions I asked him weren’t cleared up and he had his eyes and energy elsewhere. We were seated next to an extremely loud and obscene man who yelled
The F word the whole night and was disrupting a lot of other people as well.
My starter shrimp salad wasn’t tasty, bland and not as described. Fish was very good, bar took a long time, just not great this time around.
We like this restaurant very much and have been before, often with out of town guests. However, I generally feel that the service could improve. This time, our waitress took drink orders for the table but was in such a rush that she skipped me. Also, although our reservation was made through Open Table and I received several reminders, the restaurant did not have our reservation. Luckily they were able to seat us anyway.
Always a fun place, food was good, service attentive, if a bit awkward. We were there early so the place was mostly full of older folk, not an issue unless you want something younger. My business partner picked up the tab so I didn't see the overall bill but food was tasty, particularly the duck. We both order the smoked salmon appetizer with asparagus which was delicious. The upstairs bar is more hip, good for first dates.
Dinner meal was very good. Wish tables hadn't been so close together in open area dining; wasn't clear to us when waiter displayed a dessert to us, if it was part of special dinner meal or acknowledging the person for special occasion (birthday). And last, we ordered a flambé crepe that was way over priced for a teeny tiny sliver of a crepe with 3 or 4 cherries.
It was a beautiful day, life-long friends, and a wonderful birthday celebration topped by wonderful crepes and a candle on the dessert.
Had asked for a quiet corner due to a serious hearing problem. They put us in a private room.
Absolutely lovely experience. Had been there multiple times before, but will not wait so long to return. I live in Virginia.
I did compliment the owner.
By the way, I have told numerous people how impressed I was with the reservation process. Perfecto!
A new neighborhood favorite for us; the food is terrific. We have eaten there twice in recent weeks and will return over and over again. Service is smooth and responsive. It all works, making a very pleasant dining experience. We like seating in the front patio - whether open or enclosed.
We enjoyed our fixed-price brunch, despite the fact that the restaurant had run out of our chosen entrees, at only 1:15 in the afternoon! The service was good. Although we sat on the covered patio conversation still was a challenge. Nevertheless, we would return, as the menu is quite extensive, well prepared, and good value.
