Le Chat Noir
I love visiting Le Chat Noir. It's a little out of the way for me, but every time I can find an excuse, I'm happy. This is the perfect place for a date, special occasion or just a relaxing, quiet dinner with dear friends. The food is always wonderful, the wine selection is great, and the staff are so pleasant.
Great place to go for a special occasion. Food was excellent -- high quality and interesting -- and it wasn't even terribly expensive!
We have been going to Le Chat Noir for many years now. Recently, both food quality and service seem to be suffering. Unevenly cooked food, inconsistent portion sizes, skimping on some ingredients, seeming greater turnover in staff, slower service... a marked difference. Newer competition in the area from places like Millie's -- which is consistently solid -- makes me worry about Le Chat Noir now. We feel badly and will still try it again a couple of times, but at some point, it won't be worth it.
The food is really good and it's a cool place. The only negative was that they were out of two types of chardonnay we wanted. The parking is not the easiest but it's doable. Try it!
Fantastic service, amazing food, highly recommend
The host was very rude from the beginning of our experience. He acted as though we should have been grateful for the opportunity to dine with them. The night before we got a call confirming our Valentine’s reservation and preparing us for a possible 15 min delay bc they had a reservation prior to ours. When we arrived and I tried to give my name to get checked in and mentioned we had an Open Table reservation, he didn’t take my name and just said rudely that everyone had an Open Table reservation. When he finally checked us in it was 12 min past our reservation time and he said it would be another 20 min. I told him that that was not what I had been told the night before. In order to stand behind their promise, they seated us upstairs at the bar area which is marked downgrade from the ambience of the main restaurant. Service was very slow upstairs. Food was overpriced. I will not be returning.
Great as usual. Celebrating valentines
Very nice Valentines menu. Very busy so the wait staff was pressed. The meal was quite enjoyable and a decent value.
For a busy night (Valentines Day),this was excellent food and service. Naturally it was crowded, but the staff handled extremely well and the food was delicious.
I live in the neighborhood and eat often at Chat Noir. All other times have been excellent, but the Valentines' dinner was not good. Why?? portions were tiny in comparison and expensive for what it was. the dessert==we ordered the most expensive (apple with crepe) but it too was not good; the apple was still hard, the crepe tiny and just nothing lived up to Noir's usual quality.
Wine glasses are way too small. Some meals are way too small.
Excellent food. There didn’t seem to be enough servers for the room. We will definitely return, but not if any of us have a time crunch.
In spite of an attractive menu, the food doesn’t live up to expectations and prices are much too high for the food you get. My husband had duck confit which he couldn’t eat (nothing to do with confit), I had calf liver which was over cooked and chewy and our friend had steak frites. The frites were lovely but the meat not worth the price. Too bad! I think lunchtime is a better bet
I like Le Chat because of the location and ambiance. Unfortunately, my quiche was cold (which I sent back), but even the 2nd time, it was still cold. So I just kept it. This happens frequently. Must be the way they reheat it. Thanks.
Lovely setting but service was a bit off.
An extremely enjoyable evening was had by us at Le Chat Noir as we celebrated a birthday. The staff also provided a delicious dessert with candle as a surprise for the guest's birthday--and it was a surprise! Food was excellent and timely presented, which is my experience at Chat Noir, not just for this night but typically provided relatively quickly and beautifully presented.
Serving obviously pre-cooked, reheated food is not acceptable.
Very nice spot for quiet conversation at lunch, within easy walking distance of Tenleytown.
Service was terrible but food was good.
Fantastic restaurant and great ambiance. Just like a typical French bistro. The food was delicious. Started with the mushroom torte. We had the bouillabaisse and the mussels which were both fantastic. Will definitely be going back soon.
A nice friendly place. A little crowded, but has good food. I recommend.
We really liked the menu and the variety of items offered however the portions were smaller than what an average American restaurant serves. Despite of having a three course brunch, we weren't completely full since each course served was a very small portion. We used a voucher from Travelzoo so not sure if they reduced the portion sizes because we pre-paid and had a voucher or if that was their regular portion sizes. Nonetheless, the portion size served did not justify the price we paid, as shown in the attached picture; one small golf-ball size scoop of ice-cream served when we ordered the dessert.
Wonderful staff, wonderful food! It’s small and draws a big crowd, with tables close together, but this just reminded me of going to dinner in NYC and all the hustle and bustle of a big city. I loved this restaurant and we will be back again soon!
Excellent on all fronts
I have had better meals at Le Chat Noir, but this was restaurant week and my friend and I ordered a la carte. The bread, which is normally the best I've had outside of France, was stale. Our entrees were delivered so fast after we ordered them that it was doubtful that they were freshly prepared. The quinoa served with the salmon was dry. The white wine (by the glass) was not very cold.
Great service, great food as always. Highly recommend, especially over the restaurant week.
A great little neighborhood authentic French bistro. It was Restaurant Week and although we didn't take advantage of any of the RW specials, they looked like a good deal. Tuesday was 1/2 price wine bottle night - a very good offer.
As ever, the staff at Le Chat Noir brings France to Friendship Heights with great food, background music, ambience, service, location. The specials are always phenomenal. I like that escalopes de veau is now a regular menu item. Although I had the special of the day--mahi mahi--as I had prepared escalopes de veau for myself the day before. Well selected wines by the glass in many categories. The next time I am there on a Sunday, I will try to take advantage of free corkage. But the choice of wines by the glass works through the several courses. I have a larger party planned for February.
Excellent on all counts.
Lovely menu and a cozy inviting atmosphere.
Very attentive service.
As always, my guest and I had a delicious and pleasant luncheon experience. The service
was prompt and attentive, the ambience gracious. Overall, our food was very good.
Our group of seven did their special New Year's Eve fixed menu. It was excellent cuisine, even better than usual, and friendly efficient service. They did not have a dedicated Vegetarian entree for one of us, but did prepare an acceptable one on request Very good regional French wine list.
A French bistro and creperie that is authentically French and reasonable in price. We are regular customers and have always enjoyed the food and the service. We will continue to be regular customers even though our New Year’s Eve experience was not good. Five of us had reservations for the first seating at 8:30 pm. Almost every table was taken and I believe they had reservations for a second seating at 10 or 10:30 pm. We all had salads and steak of two types and they were good and cooked correctly, as usual. The Maitre’d attended us and he was good, but the table bus help did not attend to our water or bread refills. We all had the profiterole or crepe Suzette for dessert and they were great, as usual. The issue was a speaker blaring very loud, fast music about eight feet from our table. We and several other tables requested the music be turned down and the Maitre’d did so, but the owner came over and turned the music back up, but turned the speaker slightly away from our tables, which did little to no good. We rushed through our dinner and told our server that we would leave and forego dessert and coffee if the music was not turned down. They offered to move us to another table.we agreed to this, but it didn’t help much. Finally, a large group with a reservation came in and threatened to leave if they didn’t turn it down, and th3 music was turned off. Bliss! Very unusual experience at this great neighborhood restaurant- one I hope is not repeated.
I like this restaurant a lot. Food is always very good. However we went on New Years Eve and the service was confused and spotty at best. I guess because it was New Years Eve. We were brought a check which no one in the party asked for. I thought maybe there were people waiting but no not the case. Food was good as usual.
I have always enjoyed my meals at Le Chat Noir so to my surprise, the New Year's Eve dinner
was a complete flop.
The food was uninteresting from the pate to the duck. It seemed to taste very institutionalized,
as though it was a meal meant for a very large crowd. The duck was served with sausage, although
I'm not quite sure why.
The staff seemed to be in a hurry; wanting to whisk away my plate before I was finished.
I'm hoping that it was just a glitch and that everything will return to normal on my next visit.
We were rushed in the beginning, and when we complained, the wait staff ignored us in the end. The lady who waited on us was very brusque and rude, and wasn't sure about the wines. The wine selection was good as was the food.
Perfect neighborhood restaurant. Brunch is delicious, with full menu options, as well as the brunch specials. Noise is minimal and the ambiance is comfortable and cozy.
We love the food and atmosphere at Le Chat Noir. Our only complaint about the food is that the salad dressing has too much vinegar. Why can’t we just have a traditional white wine/lemon juice/mustard/EVOO dressing instead of the vinegar-y balsamic that is everywhere now??? Potato soup was delicious, steak was cooked perfectly and frites were hot and crunchy, boeuf bourguignon was tender and flavorful. Service is always excellent. Definitely a neighborhood gem.
Although we dined early, as the evening progressed, the crowd flooded in. We saw why as the service was stellar, wonderful authentic food at reasonable prices in an intimate environment. We will return!
