“Le Cavalier” (pronounced: luh-KAH-vuhl-YAY) honors the deep equestrian tradition in the Brandywine River Valley.

Le Cavalier (Le Cav) is a French brasserie from Chef-Partner Tyler Akin that takes the brasserie out of Paris and transports it to Wilmington's iconic HOTEL DU PONT. Provençal fare meets North African and Middle Eastern influences in the dining room that once housed the historic Green Room.

    I’ve been wanting to try this restaurant for a while but there are many mixed review. Decided to go for my birthday dinner and was not disappointed. The food and service were excellent! Will definitely go back.

    We were seated a few minutes ahead of our 9:15 breakfast reservation and were the third and fourth diners in the room. We found not only the coffee to be luke warm but our eggs Benedict with fingerling potatoes as well and felt the meal was overpriced for value received.

    My daughter and I dined here on Thanksgiving 2022 during mid-afternoon. First time there since the big remodel. A more casual, but still upscale setting. Some tables along the banquettes are close together. Wasn’t too crowded, so serve staff were attentive. Traditional turkey dinner was on menu, as well as several other entrees. We found our choices well-executed and tasty, including the sides. There were interesting cocktails and wines offered. The tab was on the high side once beverages and tip were added on, but it was a special occasion meal and we were a small party; might be prohibitive for a larger group. We brought home leftovers and had no clean-up awaiting us at home.

    Our second Thanksgiving at Ke Cav and better than the first. The family service of sides was smart and each item from sweet potatoes to Brussels the stuffing and cranberries was on point. Plus who wouldn’t live foie gras as a starter.

    Overall really great experience except for the steak tartar which had an odd tobacco taste that did not leave a good impression. However the restaurant took the tartar off the bill which was thoughtful, professional and appreciated. And for that I am happy overall and highly recommend the restaurant and would go back in a heartbeat. The architecture was beautiful!

    French toast did not come with fruits as expected. Coffee was cold. Servers were ok and attentive and the atmosphere was nice. The food was the sticking point. Not very good for the caliber of restaurant.

    We were disappointed in what is supposed to be a high end bistro. Two of the party had a scotch before dinner and , to be honest, for a restaurant of this type the pour was was, let’s say, chintzy. Other top restaurants in the area are much more generous, especially for the price level of the drinks. One person ordered steak frites and unfortunately the meat was under cooked. It was ordered to be medium but came very rare. Another one of the party ordered the Branzino and was very disappointed in its quality. We felt the quality of the meal was not in keeping with the prices charged. Compared with restaurants like Eclipse, Le Cavalier was a real disappointment. Unless we hear of major improvements, we will not return to this restaurant.

    Le Cavalier offers upscale dining at its best and its atmosphere is second to none. However, at this price point ($19 for a hamburger?), there are other options that have more extensive menus with dishes that are executed with the same level of culinary artistry. If you want a quick lunch, there are better options. However, if you want to impress a client or celebrate an event (e.g. anniversary), Le Cavalier warrants serious consideration.

    Food was average. Atmosphere no longer elegant, just average. Mimosas seemed to be made with canned orange juice not fresh. Music was intrusive. Service was fine. After the Green Room it is not my cup of tea but it may be yours.

    The food was consistently good. We sampled a variety of dishes and everything was excellent. They have a very good cocktail and wine list and the somme was happy to explain things and make suggestions which were very successful. The service was friendly, but the pacing sometimes suffered with food and beverages arriving at inconsistent times. The tables in the middle are very intimate with their neighbors, which seems inconsistent with the price level. When somewhat full, the room can also be quite loud. The menus are printed with a small text which can be hard to read in dim light.

    While pricey … in this instance, we got what we paid for. Our server was absolutely lovely and attentive and … the filet I ordered was among the best I’ve ever had. Our one “disappointment” was that the dinner and dessert menus were quite limited. If they elect to expand the menu, we will most definitely return.

    The restaurant is a cross between a noisy, but upscale bar, and an elegant restaurant. High ceilings and all hard surfaces make it very loud. The menu has some unusual items, but a small number of choices. The salad of bitter greens was enjoyed by one diner, the other...not so much. Why bitter? The steak frites got a good review. The roasted eggplant was unusual but wasn't enough for a main course. The ice creams were excellent. For the price, I've been to many better restaurants.

    I went with high expectations but I understand why there are not so happy or mixed reviews for this place. The couple next to us had to leave after almost more than an hour waiting for their main course. They left because they had tickets for a play, they were offered to do take out and they had to pay for their drinks only. Unacceptable to wait that long and having to leave without having dinner after two hours of being there. In our case, we had a reservation, we waited 20 min to be seated. They only gave us a glass of water for the wait. The food is good quality but when it is served is not at warm as it should be. My fiancé got a steak and it was rare for a medium. The fries were like McDonald’s ones. Nothing fancy. I would have expected a better quality for fries. I got the Lamb. It was very well cooked. As appetizers we got the onion soup which was pretty good. A few other things I noticed was: The dinnerware was not properly clean. My fiancé had to ask for another spoon and it was also dirty. I asked for a coffee. I asked it was a espresso and the waitress affirmed it was, and it was a filter coffee, served with a huge spoon; I guess they don’t know what a coffee spoon is. It was Not even served with a cookie or something like a high class restaurant should do if that is what they are trying to be. Not only the coffee wasn’t good but my cup was all stained and sticky so I couldn’t even grabbed the cup. At this point I didn’t want to call the manager and explained all these because we waited to long and I don’t want to hear a excuse like; the kitchen is backed up. I just wanted to leave. It is more than a busy night that can make this place get bad reviews. It is a shame that such a pretty place is having such a low quality service. They are trying to do better but they are not there yet. If they are trying to be a “ fancy French restaurant” they are way far from that. It could be a hit or miss going there.

    Service was great, the Caesar salad had too much dressing and did not arrive with the promised avocado, the butter and foie gras was over salted, the filet was perfectly cooked but the promised black truffle was terrible. Two thin dime sized pieces of tasteless and dehydrated disappointment

    Overall it was a good evening but the staff needs to understand that if they want to be a French restaurant it is about the dining experience and not about bringing food out quickly. Entrees were brought out before all appetizers were cleared and wine was served. The manager seemed more concerned with excuses than understanding that this was a fundamental service flaw for a restaurant of this type. This is a pricey restaurant for high turnover focus.

    The service was friendly, not at all stuffy and receptive to our requests. Portions were relatively small but very tasty and correctly described. The 2 "major" flaws were (1) loud music that was jarring to the setting and loud enough to affect talking and (2) the dessert profiteroles had soggy pastry. Wines and main courses both well priced and quite good. The 2 biggest pluses were the lamb shoulder (delicious) and the small but delicious small plates of lobster tail and mussels

    Had a great business meal for just myself here. I was curious to see the hotel and try out the restaurant. It was very formal yet relaxed at the same time if that makes sense. Delicious food. Service was a hair slow, but no one is perfect. There were two separate patrons eating their meals solo with ipads on the table, head phones, and dingy outfits, which detracted from the beauty of the dining room.

    The bronzino was excellent, and the room is beautiful. They have taken a lovely formal room and tried to make it into a bistro look with marble top tables. White table cloths and candles would be more appropriate. We ordered salads and a main course. The main course arrived before we had our salads. The server said he was going to serve the salads with the main course. There was absolutely no room on the small table for one extra salad plate, much less 4 more plates, and we had not asked for the salads to be held. We ordered cappuccinos with our deserts. The coffees came but no desert. We had to remind the waiter about our deserts.

    This place is so beautiful and has so much potential but it’s so disappointing when the food arrives. Avoid the foie gras…. it’s pretty terrible with the lumps of peaches on top of bread that you can barely taste it. All the steaks in our party came quite under done… although I asked for medium they were barely cooked. This is not truly a French restaurant and has no real refinement whatsoever in the food. The fillet was $65. You can tell that there’s no person truly leading this place. The sommelier is smug and borderline rude, with only adequate taste in wine. With all the fantastic dining spots that are opening up downtown Wilmington, this place will need to step it up!

    We really enjoyed our evening, especially because of the attentive staff and management. Cocktails were special and food was creative and delicious. The ambiance is wonderful - takes you back to another time.

    Service was excellent, atmosphere was very nice. Unfortunately, the vegetables were barely warm. DO NOT use the valet service unless you expect your vehicle to be returned to you damaged and no one at the establishment will acknowledge it. Given the atmosphere and the prices, I would not have expected the waitstaff to be wearing jeans.

    Our group had salads and small plates with a glass of wine. Everything was fresh and well prepared. Our server was pleasant and capable. The restaurant is lovely- a bit loud- but a nice relaxing light meal after a long day of travel.

    Excellent meal at Le Cav. Gnocchi, Chicken and Pineapple Upside Down Cake all were well prepared, delicious and served nice and hot on hot plates.(gnocchi and chicken). Service was terrific. THANKS!
