Lavinia's - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Excellent evening out. Got seated right away at reservation time in nice room that we could actually hear each other talk. Great food with lots of interesting choices. Only downside was they were out of Chardonnay by the glass at 6:45pm on a Saturday evening.
We were pleasantly surprised. Yelp said it was a relaxed dining experience. I would say it's a bit more upscale than advertised. The atmosphere is quiet and subdued. The menu is on the eclectic side. We tried the prime rib sandwich, the Brussel sprouts, the pulled pork sandwich and the mussels. All exceeded our expectations. Many of the menu items are spicier than normal-jalapeño, but very good. Our server was knowledgeable and pleasant. We had a very nice experience
We recently had dinner here and our salads and entrees were prepared with fresh local ingredients and were delicious. The scallops with zucchini noodles and the lobster and mushroom risotto were both excellent dishes. We will definitely return and have already recommended Lavinia's to several of our friends.
We have eaten there several times. We always enjoy the food. We were seated outside and service was extremely slow. They were nice but it was slow and multiple people were servicing the table. Also, I called up at 4:30pm and let them know it was our son's 30 birthday and we wanted to them to bring over a piece of cake. They told us our options and we picked out Chocolate Truffle and that they would handle it all, however, our meal ended and they brought out the check, no cake.
Lavinia's was very highly rated by several websites, so I thought it would be a great meal. It was, sort of...
I'm always turned off when the first thing you see on the way in is a chalk board with "Please wait PATIENTLY to be seated." I felt talked down to like a school child. Not an auspicious start to a great meal.
My table overlooked a piece of Lake Winnipesaukee in a smallish room of this old inn, perhaps a former parlor. My server was delightful.
The menu did not zing me so I went with two intriguing appetizers. Scallops with bacon sauce served over a bed of sauteed spinach and caramelized onions with a balsamic reduction. Excellent! Then Avocado and Butter Lettuce Cups with herb dressing, cherry tomatoes, bacon bits, and crispy potato strings. The crunch of the potato strings was just the contrast that the soft salad needed to keep the fresh flavors interesting. Also excellent! Appetizers in this place are definitely the way to go.
A nice red wine completed this meal. Worth the two hour drive? Yes. Would I go back? Maybe, but there are so many other interesting looking places in the upper Winnipesaukee area. Tough choice, but please take that chalk board away, if you want to be considered a really great place.
I have dined at Lavinia's a couple of times this summer and it has never been anything but perfect. The waitstaff are very professional and attentive while also being very personable.
The food is AMAZING. The burger and prime rib sandwiches are excellent but even better with the garlic parmesean fries.
The pricing is a little more than what I can afford on a regular basis, however it is a great value !
We love Lavinia's and continue to return. We sat inside and enjoy the historic home and atmosphere. We ate inside. Friends go here and eat outside for a more casual, easier environment for the 3 young kids.
Service was STELLAR! Dan could not have been more helpful with the menu or friendly. We even bought a "round for the kitchen!" What a clever idea.
We started with cheese plate, fried asparagus, clam chowder. All were great. Chowder was a little spicy so probably not for all but we liked it.
Two of us got the scallops and zucchini noodles. What a nice addition to the menu!!! I enjoyed the avacado lettuce wraps. One of us got the lobster risotto and said it was fabulous!
We'll be back!
A great place for a romantic dinner. We have been repeated customers of Lavinia's for some time. We have always had a pleasant experience, and this last visit was no exception. The restaurant decor is charming and the staff is top notch. Service is always excellent. The menu has something for everyone, and everything was prepared perfectly. If you fancy a dish that includes pasta, I highly recommend it since their pasta is hand made in-house. The beef and pork entries are wonderful and while we don't eat fish we have only heard good reviews from our table guests.
There's a great and intriguing story behind this restaurant, which is in a house that used to be used by the president of a local college, right in the middle of Centre Harbor. We really enjoyed every dish, locally sourced, creatively designed, and tastefully served.
From the featured cocktails, the Scallop and Bacon Bloody Mary was to die for!
Regrettably, we never made it to dessert because of the generous portions.
We'd go back in a heartbeat!
They have gone from fine dining to a pub menu at fine dining prices. Almost every dish had french fries for the starch... ick... They were a great, romantic restaurant that we loved to take our friends to - but no longer... I can pay much less for french fries at almost any other restaurant in the lakes region.
We had a very enjoyable evening. Service was great and the food was good. Just a couple suggestions, we enjoy eating outdoors, but place mats should be provided. On most summer
evenings you'll get a lot of water condensation on glasses...we did and were constantly having
to get more paper napkins and wiping the table. Sounds minor, but was annoying and easily fixed.
Also, the menu is a bit odd and limiting. If you have a diverse or picky group, check out the menu first.
Let me begin by saying that the Waitstaff was excellent - from the minute we walked in we were well attended. It was an extremely humid evening and I know these folks were running around but everyone was very friendly, and seemingly unaffected by the heat. We ordered the Steak Frites, the Zucchini and Scallops, and the Mushroom Lobster Risotto. The steak was good and had a massive amount of fries. The zucchini "noodles" were good, and the other vegetables delicious (only 3 scallops). The Risotto had a good amount of lobster on it. For apps we got the roasted Brussels sprouts - which was a good sized portion - and totally yum! The Caesar salad's presentation was very nice. The New England Clam Chowder .. I have to say.. we were not so impressed with - it was spicy and the color was not what we expected. Not to say is was bad, but it should not be listed at New England Clam Chowder, as such. I will go again.
Lavinia's is a high end foodie destination masquerading as post-Hippie 'laid-back' eatery (we received a 15% discount for wearing the-die!). Food and service were very good and locally sourced; Liz had scallops that were perfectly cooked with a ginger glaze, I had the pulled pork with mac 'n cheese and house slaw. Both entrees arrived quickly and hot. We had the cheese and charcuterie plate as an app- local cheeses, 3 types of local salami and awesome pickled cherries. No dessert for us (a mistake)- wine and cocktail pours met the Westport standard (bathtub-sized). Ambiance is laid back, with dining rooms small and intimate in this converted 19th century home. Note that this was a "pre-season" dinner so the joint was pretty quiet, but as the lake district gets busy we heard it can be a tough get so plan ahead. Other good local places we tried (C and C***) were good, but Lavinia's bested them easily (better food, better ambiance). We will be back.
Second time dining at Lavinia's. Had a quiet table upstairs overlooking the waterfront. Excellent appetizers. Disappointed with one entree but it was quickly removed from the table and the bill and replaced with a more delicious option. Seamless and relaxing service completed our lovely experience! Highly recommend!
Over the past several years, Lavinia's has become one of our go to stops when visiting our summer house in the Lakes Region. The creative and tasty menu items, plus daily specials, keep us coming back. When visiting Lavinia's do your best to dine in the Presidential Room, which is highlighted by a wrap-around wall mural depicting the local region in bygone days. The ambiance of this room only enhances the dining experience. On our last visit, we decided to forego the traditional entrees and opted for the soup special, a heavenly carrot and tomato creation, complemented by the house salad and the scallop appetizer...scrumptious! Regardless of what we partake of, we invariably order the roasted Brussel sprouts, which feature bacon bits in the mix! When visiting the beautiful Lakes Region and Center Harbor in particular, stop in to the big white house on the hill overlooking the lake and have a taste of Lavinia's!
We love Lavinia's! Creative, delicious, authentic, and locally-sourced are all words I would choose to describe this gem. Their cheeseburgers and hand-cut fries are always a go-to. We went for my father's birthday on 'Tie-dye Tuesdays' and received 25% off our meal for wearing tie-dye! Lavinia's is not to be missed.
