LaScala's - Philadelphia Ratings and Reviews
We were visiting from out of town and the hotel mentioned this as one of the restaurants close to the hotel. Our server was cheerful and reasonably helpful. The arugula salad and the beet & goat cheese salad were decent, but the entrees (veal marsala and veal saltimbuca) were not very appealing in appearance, and were overcooked and not particularly tasteful. It was pleasant enough, with a noise level that permitted conversation.
This is my favorite restaurant in the City! The food is always delicious and the service is great! Plus the free parking pass for the nearby lot makes it worthwhile to go into the city! This time we shared the fried calamari appetizer and then we both had the fusilli seafood entree, but instead of fusilli pasta we had whole wheat penne pasta! The calamari was incredible and the batter was so light & flavorful! The entree was truly amazing! The vodka blush sauce had an awesome taste and the seafood was plentiful!
I had the pork chop with hot cherry peppers & it was so tender and delicious. My cousin had the salmon and she really liked it and our friend had the fusilli with the seafood she also liked it. We also had the fried calamari which was very tender and the roasted beet salad which I get every time I go there, It's so good. We shared the tiramisu also delicious. Never had a bad meal.
We were a party of six seated at 6:00. We had tickets for the theater at 8:00. We do this several times a year with no problem, but last Saturday (10/21) the service was poor. There was a large party occupying a big chunk of the restaurant, and I guess this caused the problem. We ordered at about 6:10, got our appetizers fairly quickly, but main courses came after 7:00. One diner got part of her dinner later, and then another part came even later. This is not typical, but management needed to either: close the restaurant except for the party, adapt to the large party with extra staff, or let regular diners know that service would be slow and they should come early if necessary to meet a time deadline.
The food was excellent as usual; but we felt rushed and didn't have time for coffee or dessert.
Food is good and it is very convenient to the Walnut Street Theater, three blocks away. One incentive is the free evening parking with an entree purchase. The garage is located around the corner, but an inside entry means you never have to walk outside in bad weather or late at night. It is also convenient to the Ben Franklin Bridge and I-95.
I normally have a great experience at LaScala, but this visit was not the norm. We came during the not crowded happy hour and sat outside. It took 20 mins to get service. When we went went in to question service, the waiter finally came out. He said it was the hosts fault, not his, with no apology. We ordered only happy hour items. Toasted ravioli and meatballs were delicious. The Lascala cheese steak rolls and the calamari were both dry and not good. I asked the waiter to clean our table which was dusty from outside. It took him 10 mins and after I asked another waited for him to come back and do it. There were other things, but this is all I'll describe. Overall, the service brought the meal down.
We have been here before and have always enjoyed the food and found the service to be attentive. Also, love the fact that you can park free if having dinner, in a very convenient lot. All in all, nothing to dislike or complain about but instead do recommend this restaurant to friends.
The service and food was outstanding. We were a large group in from out of town, on a Sunday night, and the staff not only waited for us and stayed open later, they were attentive and didn’t rush us at all. They even gave us complimentary limoncello to celebrate a birthday. Would 100% recommend, and will definitely return!
We dined at LaScala early Sunday evening before our play at Walnut Street Theatre. Service was great, I was first to arrive and they seated me right away even though my whole party wasn't there yet. We shared the started of the octopus salad - it was unique, I have never had it with chickpeas before, but the octopus was cooked very well. The mushroom and goat cheese pasta, seafood fusilli, and penne vodka were all fantastic. Unfortunately we did not save room for dessert. We accidentally left our play tickets on the table - and they called us right away to let us know - that bit of service really stood out! We will be back!
