L'Antica Pizzeria Da Michele
Wonderful! Can’t wait to go back!
I spent 6 months on a project in Rome and have been looking for authentic Southern Italian cuisine in Southern California. Happily the search is over now that L'Antica Pizzeria Da Michel has opened. There are a lot of really good Italian restaurants but the emphasis is on the word "authentic". (Full disclosure I have not been to Oesteria Mozza yet) With my first bite of the Margarita pizza we ordered I was transported back to dining in Rome during all those months. Pizzeria Mozza has great pizza, L'Antica's pizza is different because it's what you would get in Rome.
We ordered the Margarita pizza with extra cheese, the ricotta stuff zucchini flowers and the pasta bolognese and a value priced bottle of Italian sangiovese wine. We were hoping to take some pasta home for lunch the next day. No luck as there was nothing left on our plates.
The owner, Frescesco Zimone, also came by the table and spent a few minutes talking about bringing his family's world famous restaurant from Naples to Los Angeles. Make plans to dine at L'Antica Pizzeria Da Michele before it becomes more popular than Bestia with it's 2-3 month waitlist for reservations. You will be really glad when you go.
I eat here about every 10-14 days. It’s one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I bring different friends every time. Always exceptional service, always exceptional food.
The ambience is perfect California casual modern and the process of getting a table easy - I was seated within a minute of my arrival. Of course, I came here to eat so I must specifically mention the dishes that I ordered. The zucchini flowers were crispy on the outside and contrasted with the creamy ricotta filling - I could have eaten these all night long.
The fried pizza's reputation makes it a must try and it did not disappoint. It was very flavorful and I completely understand why it would be showcased in a movie. I also ordered and enjoyed the margherita pizza. For the most part, pizza appears simple as it typically has 3 components: dough, sauce and cheese. Yet, so many pizzeria's use rubbery cheese or sauce that could have been from a jar. Not this pizza, the sauce was delicious and I would have loved it as a dip or even on pasta. The cheese was delicious and the dough had a nice chew to it.
Another must have dish that I will return to enjoy is the pappardelle alla genovese which featured braised short rib. This dish, just like all of the plates that I had here, was very flavorful and texturally pleasing yet it did not make you feel that you needed a nap as so many pasta and pizzas do.
In addition to the great food, the ambience was a very nice fusion of California casual modern meets piazza. The service was excellent. The wait staff and the owners appeared to anticipate all of our needs and were very concerned that we were having a wonderful experience.
I will definitely return and I feel the need to share this gastronomical experience my friends.
Great food, very affable owner who makes you feel welcomed as if your in his house, would have given the review 5 stars but the server was new to position and was slow and forget one item we ordered and little things she would forget, other than that restaurant was very accommodating.
Beautiful restaurant in middle of Hollywood! Patio nice. I like the pizza here but tried Cesar salad good, Calamari and brocollini both good. 2nd time here great spot before theatre.
Ordered 3 items. Peach salad special came out first which was very light. The cavatelli melanzane came out next. The pasta texture was perfectly chewy and the eggplant was very savory. The margherita pizza came out last and was much larger than anticipated. Even though it is thin, it’s very filling. The pizza flavor was very good but a little too soggy for my preference aka I prefer Roman pizza. Overall a good experience with good food.
The owner came to the table to explain the menu which was a wide variety of items. The service was great and the food even better. If you like scallops, these had truffles and were delicious. The fusilli with burrata and zucchini was amazing and the pizza is like being in Naples!
Loved everything about it. Our server Nikki was wonderful - made good recommendation. The place itself was beautiful.
The pizza is fantastic and the staff very friendly! I'd definitely recommend (and have)!
First of all, let me say that the Pizza Margherita was OUTSTANDING. I would go back just for that and a glass of wine next time. The meatballs were also VERY good. The other food we ordered, figs w/prociutto, stuffed zuccini flowers, beet salad and shrimp salad were fine, but certainly not anything to write home about. The place itself is beautiful! The designer did an amazing job. Why I'm giving it such a low score is that the service was very sketchy. There were 4 of us and 3 of us got our meals and finished them before my friend got her shrimp salad, even though we asked the waiter twice, the person at the front of the restaurant and a busboy. I also had a very hard time getting a second glass of wine. That said, I understand it's a new restaurant and the kinks need to be ironed out, ,so I would definitely cut them some slack and will visit again. I must say though, that the tall, tattooed waiter we had was RIDICULOUSLY GORGEOUS! He might want to stick to acting or modeling and forget the waiting job.
The outdoor area is so wonderful. It's a beautiful spot!
The pizza is delicious with very fresh tomatoes. The salad is also wonderful, using the best produce.
We have been to the restaurant several times. The servers are exceptionally friendly and helpful.
Beutiful space, had a 1045pm reservation. Was seated promptly then sat there for 15min, no server, no water, nothing. So we left, ashame nice looking place.
Beautiful space, delicious pizza, good service, but the music selection didn't fit the space/vibe, it was like Now Hear This hits. Seated in the bar area, the music was cranked up at 8:30 p.m. and was so loud we couldn't have a conversation.
The pizza is outstanding. The sauce is sweet and the crust is made with imported flour. The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that the crust was very soggy. Was hoping for more of a crispy effect.
We ordered a pasta dish with eggplant and ricotta. It really had no dominate flavor. Crushed red pepper would have given it more of a Pasta Alla Norma taste which is better than bland.
I will go back to try other pasta dishes however in search of flavor.
If you haven’t tried L’Antica yet, you’re missing out!
Good was amazing!! The owner was so nice as well as were the waiters. I would definitely go back.
Enjoyed the sautéed calamari and the Caesar salad. Also liked the pizza with the fried crust. Can’t recall the actual name but it is smaller than the other pizzas. The only objection we had is everything came out within a few seconds of each other giving us the impression of please eat quickly and leave and they weren’t busy. Couldn’t they have paced things a little? We were done within 25 minutes. Great if you were in a hurry but we weren’t. We will be back. Lots of flies if you eat on the patio.
Service and ambiance are lovely. Food needs some work
I've already told all my friends to go... we're going to all be fighting for reservations soon.
Owner is overbearing, telling you everything that’s good and what to order, but not asking how anything was. Lots of pressure right when you sit down to order a lot of things. Portions are large, but pizza was on a regular tray so got instantly cold and soggy. Beet salad had an icky cheese, awful.
Takes me back to Napoli , Italy ... authentic Neapolitan !
Pizza meravigiosa , ottima , perfetta !!!
Fantastic ambiance and great pizza! Big fan of the burrata and eggplant appetizer as well.
Service was horribly slow and pizza was cold :( will not go back.
the first two visits were great. fast service. this latest one was slow. a little disapponting. i have to flagged down somebody to let them know that we're ready to order. waiter was not as friendly as the others. i guess too busy. interacted with her twice, to give order and asked for check. nobody asked if evrything okay in between, came only to bring our order or when we asked for refill.
Celebrating a house move!
It was amazing, I can whole heartedly say that this was my best restaurant experience in the world. I was staying in LA for a few weeks and had heard about Da Michele from YouTube and obviously the movie Eat Pray Love and it did not disappoint. The owners greeted every table individually and when I asked if I could film the pizza process I was welcomed into to kitchens and spoke to the Pizzaolo. I’ve never felt so at home in a restaurant and the food was absolutely incredible. 5 Stars all round.
Awesome ! So happy to have it here in LA!
LOVED SITTING OUTSIDE IN BACK COURTYARD..REQUESTED OUTSIDE SEATING. SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT, PROFESSIONAL AND ATTENTIVE. MY HUSBAND AND ORDERED AN ASSORTMENT THAT WE SHARED... LOVED THE BRAISED OCTOPUS WITH LENTILS, MEATBALLS WITH GRILLED PIZZA TRIANGLES TO DIP RICH CLASSIC TOMATO SAUCE, SIMPLE PIZZA NO CHEESE WITH ANCHOVIES, TWO DIFFERENT HOUSEMADE PASTAS, CHOCOLATE CAKE (NOT AMERICAN STYLE) SINGLE LAYER OF CHOCOLATE WITH TEXTURE OF NUTS...AMAZING HAZELNUT GELATO THAT ACCOMPANIED DESSERT. CLEAN FLAVORS, NO PRENTATION. WE ARE BOTH PROFESSIONALS IN THE FOOD BUSINESS ... IT WAS A REALLY NICE TREAT! PLAN TO RETURN.
Wonderfully delicious food, great staff, and relaxed atmosphere make for an unforgettable dining experience!
This is the best Italian food in Los Angeles. I’ve been to Felix in Venice on there occasions. Don’t get me wrong Felix is very good, I’m giving the nod to Da Michele
This was one of if not THE best pizzas I've had in LA. (This from an ex-New Yorker, the capital of pizza in the USA.) Atmosphere was delightful and pleasant. Service was polite and unobtrusive. The clean modern look was inviting. I will definitely make this a regular part of my LA dining circuit. And don't be discouraged by the challenge of finding the street given the amount of nearby construction and street closures. It's worth the extra effort to find it; valet parking awaits.
The pizza was ok but very soggy and more like bread than pizza crust. Having lived in Italy for five years I have to say it wasn't very authentic. The atmosphere and service was great. I'd probably go back and hang out at the bar but I can find much better pizza elsewhere.
This is going to be my new favorite place. The food was amazing, the ambience is so cool, friendly staff. A big pricey but delicious.
Best pizza in Los Angeles --without question! Great salads and pastas too. Love the patio. All authentically Italian.
Fabulous food. Service. Ambiance
Food was amazing!!! We loved the marinara more than the margherita.. very authentic Napoleon style pizzas.. the ambience is very simple and peaceful... the service was outstanding.. the staff is extremely welcoming and helpful. Will be coming back to this place very soon again and would highly recommend pizza lovers to try them out..
Nice to have real neopolitan pizza in LA! I was recently in Naples where I ate at Sorbillo's pizzeria, and didn't have time to try Pizzeria Da Michele while there, so was very happy to see it here in California. It's got to be the most authentic Napoli pizza in the US!
There are much better places in LA for pizza and good authentic Italian. Great space. The pizza was way too soggy, and you need to like very aldente pasta. Meatballs were just okay, I can name 10 places with better meatballs. The wines were good. The server was great but the hostess needs to learn to smile, way too much Hollywood attitude, she was almost rude. As a studio exec with an expense account, it's a pass.
