The Lantern's web page had a lot of hype with previous chef's bio's and pics of chef's with their arms crossed, but the bottom line is the Lantern's food when I dined there with friends was underwhelming. The marketing was much better than the experience. First, the diningroom open to the public that night was dark and crowded with plain decor and cheap dining furniture. The tables did not have white cloths and were painted black and chipped. Not comfy or intimate. The very awkward server came over and gave us menu's and only gave us 1 drink menu for 3 diners so we had to wait to decide what we wanted to drink. With 3 ladies, that takes time. We chose our cocktails and then looked at the menu. It is pretty much what you see online, with no specials or anything that looked or sounded amazing. We mulled over the entree's and one decided on the Japanese Hot Pot and the other the Red Snapper. I decided on the pork dumpling appetizer and the squash soup. All diners concluded the food presentation was fair and so was the flavors of each dish. We wanted to love it, but for $30.00 entree's with poor service and blah food and atmosphere, I won't be back again.
Great experience. Excellent food and really outstanding service.
Lantern does not disappoint. Food is excellent with new choices as well as classics. Drink are imaginative as well and tasty!
Wonderful dinner, superb service, definitely will come back!
I think, and this is surprising since I'm not young and eat out a lot, that this was the best Asian meal I've had/can remember. Everything was superb. Salt and pepper shrimp was surprising in that it was served in a tangle of flash fried cilantro and jalapeno - an inspired presentation and flavor profile. Truly a memorable meal.
I believe Fergie said it best when she said "T-t-t-t Tastay tastayyyyy." The food is delicious. Ambience only a little bit awkward. Service was excellent.
Nice birthday dinner w my 2 daughters
Good food nice atmosphere in the backbroom
Absolutely fantastic. Our first visit. We were in CH for parents weekend. I will literally drive back for the whole crispy fish....amazing! All of our small plates were excellent, especially the crispy okra and beef wontons.
I grew up in New Orleans, where the restaurant standard is high. When I moved to North Carolina, I missed the flavorful, soulful foods that were so prevalent in my hometown. When I ate at Lantern for the first time three years ago, I finally found a place where food wowed me again. My husband and I returned for a celebratory dinner this past Saturday, and I had the same experience - wow. Flavors, quality, skill, love, dedication, knowledge - all there. Our waiter was attentive and helped us choose well. I would recommend Lantern to anyone who wants to be surprised and amazed by food - again or for the first time.
Unique and delicious flavor combinations. We've been looking forward to dining at Lantern since we moved to the Triangle. We weren't disappointed!
This was our first time there. The tables are ultra-close to each other which makes the conversation at adjoining tables basically our conversation. Wait staff was mostly attentive, but they forgot to bring our doggie bag after the meal.
Our server was great. Excellent knowledge of the menu items. Gave good food suggestions. Our favorite Chapel Hill restaurant!
It has been several year since I was last at the Lantern, but it was just as good as ever. Perfect place for celebrating our wedding anniversary. The somewhat hidden bar in the back is still quite cool as well.
Went to celebrate my wife’s birthday and our son’s admittance into UNC. The service was spot-on: unassuming, friendly, engaging, and informative. Our server made two excellent wine recommendations that paired perfectly with our meal.
The food was incredible! From the dumplings and spicy chicken wings to the steak and fresh fish. My pork chop with a fried farm egg was over-the-top!
Delicious! The inventiveness of Lantern continues. A great special occasion meal; you can share small plates, or large ones (we did both). Really enjoyed it.
Great place. Worth a visit
The menu offered a wonderful selection of locally grown dishes. The pork chop dish was the best I’ve ever had and I’d definitely order it again. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable with regards to the many and was able to make very good suggestions. He was also very attentive and friendly. We’re definitely coming back.
It was our anniversary and they made everything dreamy. Food was amazing, really good, flavors were all there and all had sort of a purpose. Recommend the fish which that day was a red snapper and the pork dumplings which were delicious. The service was great, very friendly made us feel special.
As always, Lantern delivers with amazing food and service. I've eaten at Lantern about 10 times over the last decade and it's consistently had great, delicious, innovative food. I don't know how Andrea Reusing does it, but she always has her kitchen and staff at their peak. This visit was no different - from the amazing Indian Chaat appetizer to the tea smoked chicken to the vegetable curry to the consistently wonderful asian dumplings and spring rolls - it was a wonderful meal! Every time I come I'm reminded that I should visit Lantern more often!
Dinner was wonderful. Two desserts were not good.
Great waiter and food. We will be back to taste the steamed fish soon.
My partner and I has drinks, several appetizers and dessert. All were delicious. Their presentation was lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our dining out experience.
excellent food if you love Asian fusion. Interesting combination of flavors. Cocktails were excellent, don't skip on dessert!
Interesting menu, great food with awesome service. Staff was knowledgeable and eager to suggest dishes.
The service was very good!
Wished the two back to back large parties in the bar area had been less loud and respectful to other guests.
Love the place, and eat there often. As usual the appetizers were fantastic, but the fish was to die for.
First time here. Excellent!
I love this restaurant but I ordered two starters as my meal and they both had « unannounced » cilantro in them. This pretty much ruined the meal for me and I had to eat dinner when I got home. It is my special treat restaurant for when I come home so it was pretty disappointing!
Food, service and ambience were all wonderful. Try the tomato salad. You cannot go wrong having this simply delightful seasonal treat!
Excellent food and our server was fantastic! Attentive, helpful with suggestions regarding wine and food choices
Every meal we have ever had at The Lantern had been nothing less than perfect. Tonight, everything was even more than perfect. Absolutely delicious and wonderfully creative, the food and the experience here never disappoint!
Everything about this place was amazing!
What a fantastic meal! Lantern is still our favorite place for a nice dinner.
Celebratory birthday dinner was all that we have come to expect from Lantern. Food was creatively prepared and presented. Wait staff was knowledgeable and very attentive without being too obvious. It continues to be a real pleasure to dine at Lantern.
Our waitress was very cordial, professional & courteous. We had the Korean fried chicken & pork dumplings for appetizers, pork shoulder for our entrée & hot chocolate cake for dessert. All of the food was simply outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Absolutely wonderful cocktails and food! Celebrated my husband's birthday and Lantern did not disappoint! The tile fish dish and fried whole fish were both fabulous...very fresh and well seasoned. And LOVED the hot chocolate cake with coconut ice-cream!!
Disappointing diner. The pork dumplings much too salty, the tofu and noodle dish was mostly noodles with a few lukewarm pieces of tofu. Did not meet expectations for price. Chocolate cake dessert delicious.
We went with great expectations for a 50th birthday party. The appetizers were great but not so the entrees. Somehow the taste did not meet the expected standards specially when we were paying $55 a person with 20% gratuity which adds up to $65 per person. The food was salty and lacking the refined taste. The service was exceptional, no doubt. More options rather than only four available entrees is a suggestion. They could not change the vegetarian plate and decrease the salt as everything is already precooked. Was not interested in the fish or the beef.
The people who handled the booking went above and beyond to get us a table for 8.
Love the clams!
Lantern is an outstanding place to eat, and especially to celebrate special events. The food is excellent, especially the fish and the dumplings; the service is attentive and professional; the desserts delicious.
