The service was dreadful. From the time we sat down until we left was almost 3 hours. We consistently had to ask a member of the staff when we would be served our next course. It's as if we were invisible. One entree was so overcooked as to be inedible. Another, the lamb kebab, had two small ground lamb meatballs on top of a pile of greens. All in all, a dining experience to be missed.
This Berkeley institution is as good as ever! Omar has done a great job curating a dynamic wine list, with a range of styles, prices and some refreshingly unusual Zins.
The food and service is always great!
It had been 5 years since we last dined at Lalimes. The atmosphere is still pleasant, comfortable and not to loud. Our meal included the Padron peppers and Gen salad, both of which were excellent. Our entrees included the Lamb Kebab and Halibut. The Halibut was very good, cook just right and complimented the sides very well. The Lamb was also tasty but was not Kebabs, rather ground lambs patties. It was served in a way, patties on top of the pita with the sides under the pita, that made it a little difficult to eat. It too was cooked just right. For dessert we ordered the Key Lime pie and were very pleased. We also ordered another dessert but it neither appeared on the table or the bill. Overall, the services was just ok, the atmosphere nice and the food satisfying. Entrees are priced reasonably. With all that, i'm not in a hurry to return for a date night but would consider it for a family outing of 8-10 people.
We've been to Lalime's several times and will certainly go back again. The bread was delicious and the butter was not cold and hard. (Simple, but important.) My steak was done perfectly and her hamburger was delicious. The cocktails were served quickly and when her's didn't taste right, they replaced with no hesitation.
Nice neighborhood restaurant
The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. My only issue was that I had brought a very nice (and expensive) umbrella and that somebody else made off with it. I would request the restaurant to write a note (perhaps a humorous one) to remind people to be mindful of taking what they bring! That set me back a bit more than i'd expected. But the food and service was excellent.
I've been going to Lalime's for special occasions for many years and it never disappoints. I'm so glad it has survived in the ever competitive restaurant-marketplace. It has a special place in the hearts of Berkeley foodies and for good reason.
most of the food was very disappointing - no flavor no spice, nothing interesting at all. won't go back.
The preparation was disappointing. Kale side appeared to have been sitting in a warmer for several hours (overdone). Tongue was a big disappointment. Shishkebab had no kebab; included none of the vegetables one would expect with a Shishkebab.
In addition, the wait staff was totally discombobulated. We were brought dishes intended for other tables 5 times. Similar events at other tables.
I used to love this restaurant. Sadly, times have changed. Tried this restaurant twice in two months to be sure, but was disappointed each time.
Portions are very small with full sized entree prices. Much of the food was under seasoned and inconsistent. For example, my daughter's pork chop was juicy, and my lamb chops were dry and looked like they had been sitting around. Our Caesar salads were undressed and bland. The pot de creme was rich with a good deep chocolate flavor, but the apple galette was underdone, crust wasn't cooked through and was cold.
Mixed meal at best.
The lamb kebabs with all the accoutrements were delicious, as was the swordfish Niçoise salad and the artichoke. A lovely dinner with great service. Lalime’s is, in my opinion, one of the great gems of the Bay Area.
Fabulous food, great service, ambience is special - it is our go to restaurant when we want great service, attention to detail and food that is unusual.
Great food in an intimate setting - with a a full bar.
For whatever reason, Lalime's has been understaffed lately. So service can be slow, but the food & ambience remain better than average. We've been enjoying Lalime's 3-4 times per year for over a decade.
Really nice neighborhood spot. Very good foor and drink. Nice staff except for somewhat unfriendly host who had a tough time saying "Welcome" to us.
We enjoyed it and would go back.
Our salad was great as was the martini. The main courses however were a bit bland.
The menu has changed recently and the food quality has gone down. What was once a "most favored" restaurant has seen better times. I hope it will bounce back.
Unfortunately, the kitchen is having some serious problems and it was so bad, we won't be going back. We waited OVER 45 minutes just to get our salad. All we were told was that the salad station was backed up. We watched other people looking frustrated too as they were waiting for their food. The manager never came over, we weren't offered any compensation, and we ended up having a clear understanding why there are always so many openings for reservations at this restaurant at popular times.
We were celebrating a birthday, and were completely happy with the food (delicious), the service (helpful and friendly) and the ambience (lovely, and we were able to hear each other talk)...we had a great evening! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!
Lovely yet service was a bit lacking.
Lalime's is consistenly excellent. Meals are tasty, creative, and the freshest ingredients. While it is pricey, this is the go-to place for a special night out.
We had a lovely time enjoying a delicious meal and ambience.
Consistent quality over many years. This time I had a very unique leek salad as an appetizer and halibut that was out of this world. My wife went light with oysters, soup and fish and chips- each special and satisfying
I'm lucky, I can walk to Lalime's. However it is worth the drive. Reliable, delicious menu and friendly service.
The food was excellent and portions just right. Friendly service, though a bit slow. I will keep coming back!
Lalime's has been dependably above average and an enjoyable dining spot (and even special occasions) for many years. During my last visit, however, the food was very subpar. So much so, that we wondered if our meals were perhaps served before they were fully complete. The lamb kebabs were cold and bland, missing garnishes, and didn't look at all like the same dish served to an adjacent table. The chicken milanese was also cold and bland, the breading was not crisp or even brown, and had no sauce or dressing. The halibut was fine, not great, but not as unsatisfactory as the chicken or lamb. The apple galette was gooey and not crisp.
We called to discuss this with the manager the next day who was completely unresponsive and didn't care. What's going on, Lalime? You've been so good for so long....
Food was just OK. Not as good as it has been on previous visits. Service was very good. We have been here many times and recommend it to friends. We will go again to see if we were just on an "off" nite.
We dined at Lalime's to celebrate my aunts 90th birthday. The staff was very accommodating, professional and friendly. All 5 of us ordered something different and no one was disappointed. The cozy setting made for a perfect evening. We will put this cute little place on our A list.
We were disappointed by our recent visit; it seemed that the quality had dropped a notch or two since our last visit. It was still good, but no longer oustanding. There were problems in the kitchen, as my wife did not receive the dish described in the menu. It was returned to the kitchen for correction, but by the time she received the correct order I had finished eating my order.
The chocolate dessert arrived with a jarringly large portion of banana laid across the top which was not mentioned in the menu.
Even the aperitif was marred by a small sliver of glass in an otherwise excellent martini.
There is also an annoying glare from headlights arriving from cars at the intersection facing the dining room.
All in all I have to say it was not up to Lalime's usual standards.
The owners of this fantastic restaurant catered our wedding 30 years ago. We have returned many times since, most recently for our 30th wedding anniversary last week. We are consistently impressed by the creativity of the menus, the high quality of the food, the professionalism of the staff and the warm ambiance of the space. Already looking forward to our next visit.
Warm welcome, excellent wine and food, attractive decor, warm
experience on a cold night 😋
Was pretty quiet at 6:30, but very noisy at 8:30 and hard to hear friend sitting right next to me. We were asked to leave our table before 2 hours after our reservation, which I thought was a bit too soon. After getting up and putting on coats, we were on the sidewalk at 8:25!
Lalimes has been a favorite of ours for the last 20 plus years. It never gets old. Everything about dining there is such a pleasure.
For years I have respected the owners of this restaurant
and was sad to experience its current disappointing
state. On a Thursday night, it was almost empty, and our
food was very mediocre. There are so many good choices
in Berkeley that I doubt Lalime's will be long on the scene.
Disappointed with drop in food/service quality. Used to be a family favorite but now I would hesitate to ever return again.
We've been eating at Lalimes a few times a year for thirty years, delight in the varying menus, and this was one of the best. Every dish we four tasted was perfect. The server was extraordinary: patient with our slow and soft-spoken 90 year old friend. When asked if a vegetable side dish might be available though not on the menu she arranged with the chef to provide the kale and squash side that would ordinarily only have been served with a specific meat dish on the menu. We'll keep coming
We dined at Lalime about two years ago and the food was fair. However, the service was horrible. So we hadn't returned. We decided recently to give them another try and it was a disappointment! First it was a cold and windy day so naturally we were dressed for the cold weather. When we arrived and were about to be led to our table no one offered to take our heavy overcoats hats and scarves. My wife ordered a caesar salad which had no croutons and one slice of anchovy and it turned out to have NO dressing, none. I had to remind the waiter to bring my glass of wine I requested to arrive with my dinner. Needles to say we are crossing Lalime off our list. This is sad because Lalime used to be such a great dining experience.
Wonderful dining experience every time! Great cocktails, nice wine by the glass options. The winter salad had nice contrasts with the bitterness of the lettuces and the mild sweetness of the vinaigrette. The beef was done perfectly with a fantastic sauce and perfectly cooked vegetables and potatoes. We finished our meal with the apple galette with vanilla bean ice cream which had a nice sour creme fraiche base under it. Overall a delight, and besides, its a great place to see Mark and Joann Roberts!
We were seated on time and service was spotty. It was very busy and loud on a Saturday night. Food was good, cocktails/wine were okay. Came here for the happy reviews and healthy side food and agree.
