Unfortunately, the kitchen is having some serious problems and it was so bad, we won't be going back. We waited OVER 45 minutes just to get our salad. All we were told was that the salad station was backed up. We watched other people looking frustrated too as they were waiting for their food. The manager never came over, we weren't offered any compensation, and we ended up having a clear understanding why there are always so many openings for reservations at this restaurant at popular times.
We were celebrating a birthday, and were completely happy with the food (delicious), the service (helpful and friendly) and the ambience (lovely, and we were able to hear each other talk)...we had a great evening! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!
Lovely yet service was a bit lacking.
Lalime's is consistenly excellent. Meals are tasty, creative, and the freshest ingredients. While it is pricey, this is the go-to place for a special night out.
We had a lovely time enjoying a delicious meal and ambience.
Consistent quality over many years. This time I had a very unique leek salad as an appetizer and halibut that was out of this world. My wife went light with oysters, soup and fish and chips- each special and satisfying
I'm lucky, I can walk to Lalime's. However it is worth the drive. Reliable, delicious menu and friendly service.
The food was excellent and portions just right. Friendly service, though a bit slow. I will keep coming back!
Lalime's has been dependably above average and an enjoyable dining spot (and even special occasions) for many years. During my last visit, however, the food was very subpar. So much so, that we wondered if our meals were perhaps served before they were fully complete. The lamb kebabs were cold and bland, missing garnishes, and didn't look at all like the same dish served to an adjacent table. The chicken milanese was also cold and bland, the breading was not crisp or even brown, and had no sauce or dressing. The halibut was fine, not great, but not as unsatisfactory as the chicken or lamb. The apple galette was gooey and not crisp.
We called to discuss this with the manager the next day who was completely unresponsive and didn't care. What's going on, Lalime? You've been so good for so long....
Food was just OK. Not as good as it has been on previous visits. Service was very good. We have been here many times and recommend it to friends. We will go again to see if we were just on an "off" nite.
We dined at Lalime's to celebrate my aunts 90th birthday. The staff was very accommodating, professional and friendly. All 5 of us ordered something different and no one was disappointed. The cozy setting made for a perfect evening. We will put this cute little place on our A list.
We were disappointed by our recent visit; it seemed that the quality had dropped a notch or two since our last visit. It was still good, but no longer oustanding. There were problems in the kitchen, as my wife did not receive the dish described in the menu. It was returned to the kitchen for correction, but by the time she received the correct order I had finished eating my order.
The chocolate dessert arrived with a jarringly large portion of banana laid across the top which was not mentioned in the menu.
Even the aperitif was marred by a small sliver of glass in an otherwise excellent martini.
There is also an annoying glare from headlights arriving from cars at the intersection facing the dining room.
All in all I have to say it was not up to Lalime's usual standards.
The owners of this fantastic restaurant catered our wedding 30 years ago. We have returned many times since, most recently for our 30th wedding anniversary last week. We are consistently impressed by the creativity of the menus, the high quality of the food, the professionalism of the staff and the warm ambiance of the space. Already looking forward to our next visit.
Warm welcome, excellent wine and food, attractive decor, warm
experience on a cold night 😋
Was pretty quiet at 6:30, but very noisy at 8:30 and hard to hear friend sitting right next to me. We were asked to leave our table before 2 hours after our reservation, which I thought was a bit too soon. After getting up and putting on coats, we were on the sidewalk at 8:25!
Lalimes has been a favorite of ours for the last 20 plus years. It never gets old. Everything about dining there is such a pleasure.
For years I have respected the owners of this restaurant
and was sad to experience its current disappointing
state. On a Thursday night, it was almost empty, and our
food was very mediocre. There are so many good choices
in Berkeley that I doubt Lalime's will be long on the scene.
Disappointed with drop in food/service quality. Used to be a family favorite but now I would hesitate to ever return again.
We've been eating at Lalimes a few times a year for thirty years, delight in the varying menus, and this was one of the best. Every dish we four tasted was perfect. The server was extraordinary: patient with our slow and soft-spoken 90 year old friend. When asked if a vegetable side dish might be available though not on the menu she arranged with the chef to provide the kale and squash side that would ordinarily only have been served with a specific meat dish on the menu. We'll keep coming
We dined at Lalime about two years ago and the food was fair. However, the service was horrible. So we hadn't returned. We decided recently to give them another try and it was a disappointment! First it was a cold and windy day so naturally we were dressed for the cold weather. When we arrived and were about to be led to our table no one offered to take our heavy overcoats hats and scarves. My wife ordered a caesar salad which had no croutons and one slice of anchovy and it turned out to have NO dressing, none. I had to remind the waiter to bring my glass of wine I requested to arrive with my dinner. Needles to say we are crossing Lalime off our list. This is sad because Lalime used to be such a great dining experience.
Wonderful dining experience every time! Great cocktails, nice wine by the glass options. The winter salad had nice contrasts with the bitterness of the lettuces and the mild sweetness of the vinaigrette. The beef was done perfectly with a fantastic sauce and perfectly cooked vegetables and potatoes. We finished our meal with the apple galette with vanilla bean ice cream which had a nice sour creme fraiche base under it. Overall a delight, and besides, its a great place to see Mark and Joann Roberts!
We were seated on time and service was spotty. It was very busy and loud on a Saturday night. Food was good, cocktails/wine were okay. Came here for the happy reviews and healthy side food and agree.
Past meals at Lalime's were delicious. This timethe food came out cold for one of us — it happens.
More significantly there were only small amounts of food with rather bland taste. Server was inexperienced and not very helpful with questions. All in all, a disappointing dinner. Maybe it was just an off night for everyone.
lalimes is always fun, always first rate, frequently unusually excellent and occasionally out of this world. the cocktails are always a treat. and they have a very unteresting wine list.
Lalime's is one of the best places to eat when you want to have space to talk...and not listen to loud music! Food is excellent, bar is great, staff always helpful and friends. A neighborhood gem.
Our favorite neighborhood restaurant. Always has been, always will be.
Very busy Valentines Day dinner at Lalime’s was not as refined as regular dining usually is.
Descriptions of preset menu options looked delicious. But upon arrival at table, portions were small and dishes were less than described...
Service was very slow unless one had earlier reservations.
Lalime's has always been a solid go to restaurant but this last visit fell short. Maybe because it was Valentines day and they just didn't seem to be ready for the crowd. We had a 5:30 reservation so you would think the service would be more timely.
They much have added tables to the already crowded main dining area. The wait staff had to struggle to get the food to the tables as there was no room between them.
The five course dinner selections were great but the soup course arrived late and a few degrees below lukewarm. The waiter was way to busy and just seemed interested in just moving the people though, maybe they over booked?
Anyway it was a bit disappointing but we'll be back.
After we were seated out waitress was attentive until we placed our orders for cocktails and dinner. We didn’t see anyone after that for at least twenty minutes. The bartender finally brought our drinks and dinner arrived very soon thereafter. The food was pretty good but the wait and the pacing made it hard to enjoy. The courses came pretty quickly after that all the way through dessert. We were never asked if we’d like coffee or an aperitif. The bill came as soon as we’d finished eating our chocolate cake.
It was very clear that they wanted to get us out of there so they could seat their next guests. This was not a case of us lingering too long, it was more likely a result of them taking so long to initially serve us and then wanting to seat their next guests. Whatever, it was the least satisfying $200+ dining experience we’ve ever had.
This isn’t the first time we’ve been disappointed by LaLimes. But it’s our neighborhood restaurant and we have had positive experiences there in the 30+ years we’ve lived nearby, so we keep giving them another try. But it’ll be a long time before we go back.
My husband and I had a date night. We hadn’t been to Lalime’s in years and were pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices.
We won’t wait so late by next time.
Love the ambiance at Lalime’s. But we were disappointed with the food and wait time for our food. The chicken (with pasta) turned out to be extremely bland. Lamb chops (3 small pieces) were excellent but came with no sides except a few slivers of cabbage. Salads were simple and good quality, but the meal felt over priced. Lastly, we had to wait over an hour for our entrees (literally one hour between our salad course and entree) which was frustrating. I had high hopes for such a cute place and was sad to be disappointed.
Perfect impromptu dinner experience
I have been to this restaurant several times and was always very satisfied. This last time, something was off. It took twenty minutes for our order to be taken and another forty minutes to get our food. Twice they brought out the wrong order.. we requested to take leftovers and they forgot that too. The restaurant was very quiet, very few people, no excuse and hardly an apology.
This is the first time that I have been disappointed at Lalimes. The waiter several times answered that he didn't know when asked a question...and did not try to find out. The rib-eye steak was terrible...fatty and bad texture. The potatoes were dry and over done.
Very disappointing dinner at Lalime’s! Have eaten there before with good experience, so chose it for a Birthday dinner. Food was entirely lack-luster, boring, marginally tasteless - virtually across the board. And there were 5 of us! The wine was good, the ceviche was tasty, and the rest: salads, halibut, dessert (even dessert was boring, and that’s hard to do!) were uniformly uninteresting.
And then we got the bill!!! Which felt like adding insult to injury. Very expensive boring meal.
When I spoke with the manager to give this feedback, his reply was “Gee, wish we had heard about this earlier.” Which just between you and me, felt like blaming the victim.
We will not be in a hurry to dine at Lalime’s any time soon.
My wife and I came here on our first date in 2004, and have been coming back for the last 14 years! It's a very special place for us.
Disappointing. Seems like they’ve declined over the past few years. Perhaps they’re trying to do too many things instead of doing anything well. Even the formerly delicious hamburger, a mainstay on their menu, has changed. It tastes like meatloaf now, with nearly raw onions introducing a weird crunch into what used to be an excellent, unctuous, beefy burger. Service is inconsistent. Ambiance remains lovely.
They showed a seating for four although we had reserved for only two persons, but that was easily rectified. They were out of the mussels....the caesar salad was just average with a paucity of dressing and no anchovies. The glass of wine was expensive and the service was average
Awesome neighborhood gem!
