The food was delicious!! Service was great from all the staff. There was one waiter who was phenomenal. I believe his name was Ere. Terrific service from him!! I hope he’s there when I go back!!
La Viola was one of, without doubt, one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had, and that’s saying something. When the food came out, namely the main course, it’s presentation and quality was the equivalent of Stouffers frozen meals you buy at Acme. The servers were unfriendly and rushed what was supposed to be a pleasant evening. Even as we tried to adjust the bill, they overcharged us. When you go to an Italian restaurant, at the very least you expect to be served by competent, authentic Italian people, as one would with any type of ethnic cuisine, wether it be Asian or French. Instead, it’s run by a fake group of people masquerading around the place as Italians. The whole establishment should be ashamed with themselves. Awful, awful experience.
Restaurant week. Didn’t disappoint. Will definitely be back to explore regular menu
This was the absolute worst “Italian” food I have ever tasted in my life. To call it Italian is a true crime. The most basic Italian dish cannot be accomplished in this restaurant. Not only is the food horrific, the service is just a bad. Slow. Don’t communicate well. Space is small and crammed, which you wouldn’t mind so much if the food was good, but it’s not. Please don’t eat here. You will regret it.
Great food and service. Food is consistent every time we go.
HANDS DOWN the best place for a large group dinner. Even with 12 of us there, we were taken care of extremely well, our food came quickly and was delicious. Highly recommend!
We tried out La Viola West for restaurant week. The food was amazing, definitely top quality. It was extremely crowded but that was expected. The noice level was much more energetic when we first got there but as the night when on it did quiet down. I would highly recommend it.
For an extremely busy Friday night (restaurant week), La Viola did an outstanding job serving all 4 courses in a timely manner. The servers all had a great sense of humor despite how busy they were. I absolutely loved the stuffed pork chop and enjoyed the other courses as well. The seating was tight but noise level was moderate. Great vibe and incredible value!
Great value for Restaurant Week.
Amazing food & service. Tip: cash only and BYOB
La Viola just keeps getting better! Our party of three chose 3 different entrees and all were very pleased. The pork chop was incredible. The spaghetti and chicken dishes were also superb. The staff is attentive but not overbearing. We look forward to many more dinners there.
Everything was excellent, the only drawback is they only accept max of 2 credit cards, this makes going with a large party difficult. They should contact the customer when reserving a table for a party of 3 or greater.
Always a treat and the BYOB makes it an excellent value. Staff delightful. Classy and delicious
We had our annual holiday staff luncheon where we, the managers and above take out the staff for all of their hard work. we like to do it after our holiday break to have something to look forward to when we start the New Year. We chose this date because it was during restaurant week. We chose La Viola because they could accomadate our large party of 12 people and because they had the best menu offering of all the choices we had. I was so glad we chose this restaurant because the service was spectacular, they were very attentive and very humorous. They knew about everything on the menu and were great with their opinions on certain menu items. Everyone agreed that the food which is all home made was absolutely delicious from the appetizer to the dessert. So thank you La Viola for such a memorable luncheon, I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is searching for a great italian restaurant with home made dishes.
Everything was good the food the service the value for your money. But, the noise level was way too loud
Always the best food and best service.
I had an annual dinner with a group of friends between Christmas and New Year. The food was very good service was excellent and fair prices. The owner is great and works to make you comfortable and will meet any reasonable accommodation.
Incredible service. Mgr made sure we had a great table so our large party could talk and enjoy the night. The food was just as incredible! We’ll be back. Thank You.
I was seated by the window facing the kitchen doors. Throughout my dinner there were as many as eight waiters standing in a line facing me waiting for customers to arrive. I felt uncomfortable by their attention as we treated our son and daughter in law to theater and dinner in Philadelphia, an unfortunate choice of restaurant that I won’t make again. Surely there is a more appropriate place for them to line up!
We hadn’t been to La Viola in 5-6 years. Our memories of the food and service were stellar. This was not what we experienced this time. The servers were inattentive even though we were only 1 of 2 tables that were seated while we were there AND there were many servers standing around. Our waiter expressed annoyance when we asked him to repeat the specials even though 2 members of our party had not been there for the first go-round. The salad of the day was good, but the entrees were unexceptional. The cannoli cake for dessert was quite good. We had raved to the Italian in our party about this wonderful restaurant and were embarrassed by what we discovered.
We booked La Viola for Christmas Eve dinner and after Tuesday night’s experience, we will probably never go back. We were rushed the entire time and the service was terrible. Just to put things into perspective, our Parmesan cheese was literally tossed to us by a guy that showed up mid- meal in track pants to bus tables. They were so loud bussing the tables behind us that we couldn’t hear ourselves talk. They never offered to open our second bottle of wine and did everything they could do get us out.
Amazing food and wonderful vibe! Loved it!
The bus service was attentive, however the rest of our service and experience was not good. We could not hear each other talk due to the noise level and at one point, the waiter asked the table next to us to keep it down as he could not hear us place our order. I had to turn on the AC (in December) because of the heat. The waiter could not reach the controls, so we adjusted it for him. I had asked for my soup and salad to be served as my entree, however they brought the soup out with the others’ appetizers. I sent it back and asked to cancel the salad but hey brought it out anyway. I know this sounds high maintenance, however my initial request was very simple.
The restaurant is obviously over crowded and the wait staff was short handed. When we got the bill, it included cappuccinos we did not order. They did offer us desserts to make up for the inconvenience.
Very disappointed! We felt very rushed. The waiter was not very friendly, never told us about the specials and never asked if we were interested in desert just brought us our check. I have been here on two other occasion and had a great experience but this time was far from a great experience!
As soon we we walked in they rushed us to a table, rushed to take our order, rushed the food out in 3-5 mins, rushed to clear the table, rushed dessert, immediately gave the check, and rushed for us to pay. I have never been to a place that just wanted to get you in and out and clear the table. There were so many open tables in the restaurant it made absolutely no sense!!! Quite disappointed with this visit!
Pretty loud in there. Very reasonably priced. Pasta, was very good and the Tuna that was a nightly special was very good. The food came out very quickly, it was a real production line. In the front part of the restaurant they have a bunch of tables for 8 from front to back, and if you have a foursome, you are sitting pretty much at the same table as another foursome....luckily the foursome next to us was very friendly and we passed some conversation back and forth. It was pretty cramped, however.
Its a BYOB and when I arrived my waiter said he would chill it. I expected him to bring a chiller to the table but he took it away. No problem....except he forgot about it and I had to get his attention to ask him to bring it to the table. He droped it off and forgot to bring me a glass, so I had to get his attention again. So by the time I got my glass of wine, the food arrived. Big Bummer.
The Dessert was incredibly good.
It made for an ok experience following the concert, but I would not go back.
We were seated downstairs which was noisy, but ok because we had a large group. As long as you aren't looking for a quiet, intimate dinner, the noise shouldn't be a problem.
The food was unremarkable. Not bad. But not great. There are several Italian restaurants in Philly that I would plan to go back to before this one that simply had better food.
Service was good - they were attentive to our needs and accommodated all of our requests in a timely manner.
Overall, it was just ok. Certainly not a bad experience, but it will not be one of Philadelphia's Italian restaurants that I would encourage my friends and family to visit.
Food is always consistent. The staff is friendly and efficient. It is always a pleasure to visit LaViola.
Very loud and crowded food is tasty but the portions are small there are better and truer Italian restaurants in Philly
Overall, we felt rushed and a bit unsatisfied. Our party of five arrived on time for our reservation only to be crammed into a corner four top. A basket with four slices of bread arrived, which the five of us quickly finished. Server hurried us through ordering but didn’t bring the additional bread we requested. Entrees dropped within minutes — too quickly, really, for a leisurely dinner. Food was nicely presented and tasty, but portion sizes were lacking. We all left a bit hungry.
Great place for a large group, which we were. Food and service were great.
May not be the best fit for date night.
The staff was very nice, attentive and the food was very good. The small space and the noise level was really difficult to deal with, however. We were there on a busy Friday night before going to a concert at the Merriam.
Food was good, but unremarkable. Staff was nice. Place was crazy busy, packed mostly with young students. Waiters and staff were literally running. Food was served promptly. Enjoyable if you're looking for a very alive setting.
Great for groups and fun Italian BYOB. Very loud in back room however.
Terrible, from start to finish. If I could give the service a negative rating I would. You are just a number at this restaurant - get you in and out as fast as possible and take no pride in service or food quality. The food is mediocre at best, and the waiters couldn’t care less about you, even to look you in the eye as they are taking your order. I’m generally pretty tolerant, but essentially walked out of here. Go to the bistro across the street, or try someplace else. There are far too many other excellent BYOs in this city to waste your time or money here!!!
We have been to La Viola at both locations on numerous occasions.
The restaurant was once a real value with a vibrant kitchen.
In Philadelphia, there are dozens of Italian restaurants where you
can order fine pasta dishes for under $20. Pasta dishes are now generally
$20 and up at La Viola with relatively small portions.
In addition, there seems to be no coordination between the two locations
regarding reservations. So three of us were at West and one was at East, all seated.
This has happened before. The disorganization is frustrating and annoying.
As a result, we will take our business elsewhere.
The service and food was excellent. The chocolate dessert was amazing
Very nice setting. We were seated promptly and orders were taken in a reasonable time. Food was excellent although portions are a bit on the small side. While service was good it was difficult to get the attention of the wait staff. We would have liked some grated cheese with our pasta, but none was provided or offered.
As usual, La Viola was hectic. The best part of a meal there can be the neighborliness of the people next to you, as the tables are very close. The pasta dishes are excellent, as are the salads. The cannoli cake was not good--ordinary white cake with a cannoli stuck on top. Good place to go before a show at the Kimmel if you don't mind the commotion.
Stopped in for an early dinner after a matinee. The room filled gradually as we ate a leisurely dinner. The food was wonderful, the portions just right, and the wait staff was attentive. Not a particularly fancy place, but light and airy. BYOB, with a premium wine and spirits store just around the corner. We will definitely go back.
