La Trattoria - Alexandria
Super cool place with an amazing atmosphere and great food
We dined outside on a beautiful night. Had great service. Our pizza came out missing a few key toppings, but they were apologetic and even comped a beer!
Awesome food, great staff, and an excellent experience
The cocktails were great, as were the main dishes. There's not much else to recommend beyond that. Upon arrival, we were told we wouldn't be seated until our reservation time. When we pointed out that it WAS our reservation time, we were sent to the bar to wait. As we had theater tickets, we decided we'd eat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and made a good drink but we were taken to our seats, assured that there'd be no problem with our timing. As we'd reviewed the menus while waiting, we placed our order immediately with the friendly waitress, noting again our theater tickets. Our fried artichokes came out immediately but if they were, in fact, fried, it had been earlier in the day. They were cool and soggy, not hot and crispy, as one would expect. We now knew why they were able to be served immediately. We then waited 40 minutes for our dinners. They were, frustratingly, excellent but we had no time to enjoy them. As the plates were put down, we asked for our check and proceeded to plow through some wonderful pasta and osso bucco while throwing back our wine and dashing for the door. With so many options in Old Town, it'd be hard to justify returning to such a mixed experience.
Great food, outstanding service and a wonderful piano filled dinner experience. It was like we were regulars.
I've always want to try La Trattoria and wish now I'd tried it years ago. It's now our favorite in town. Everything was perfect.
Excellent restaurant. Great ambiance, attentive service.
Trattoria is a gem. Nice change from the King St strip. Delicious fresh pasta entrees and other mains with side portions of pasta or risotto. Our group had gnocchi, linguini with clams, Sicilian salmon. Generous and beautifully prepared entrees. We had cold calamari salad, fried artichokes, Cesar salad, cucumber soup. All very contemporary and upscale Italian food. Their bread is excellent, too. Servers are pleasant, but forgot a soup spoon and brought incorrect appetizer at first, but quickly remedied those issues.
Made reservations for the monthly opera night. I know the performer and his family very well and was thrilled to dine. (LOVE the bagels on Saturdays).
*born and raised on Long Island so I miss REAL bagels, feeling particularly lucky you’re the first one that pops up on best bagels on Old Town
Food was absolutely delicious. Packed house, so trying to understand why service was so SLOW. Definitely worth the wait because the gnocchi was superb!
Just took 2 hrs for a 3 meal course. Not what I was expecting, but the music and entertainment was stellar. My only suggestion is to add more courses of food like wine, cheese and fruit to keep food on the table as you’re enjoying the performances. I will be back in the hopes that service will reflect better timing 🌸
We had a great meal here. Food was delicious although it took a while for our dinner to come. Would not have been a problem except we were heading to the theatre. Still made our show with time to spare.
The food was absolutely delicious, the portions appropriate, and the service was friendly and efficient.
When we arrived for our reservation we were directed to sit at the bar as there were no tables available. Okay, we’ll go with it. The restaurant is small and very charming. Our server was clearly experienced, however, her demeanor and lackluster service, pitiful. We are three family members who see each other infrequently and were very happy to be enjoying each other’s company. In no way would we allow the attitude of this server ruin our evening. With so many fantastic restaurants in the area these days, I would be hard pressed to return to La Trattoria in Old Town.
We have made La Trattoria our Saturday night restaurant. We go there every Saturday night we’re not out of town. The owners, Michael and Kelsey, have created a wonderful venue for a perfect evening of enjoyment. My wife and I try different items from the menu almost every time, and everything we’ve had is always excellent. Our servers are always attentive. Dine in the piano rooms upstairs and David, on the piano all evening, is excellent and provides the perfect musical ambiance for a great evening. He even plays requests and I swear there isn’t a song he doesn’t know. On many Saturday nights, Michael will join in later in the evening and sing a few songs, too. All-in-all, La Trattoria is is a gem in Old Town Alexandria and the perfect escape for an excellent dining experience.
Always a wonderful experience!
Unbelievable food and great service! I brought my Italian family here and we were all impressed with our meals. They just need to work on ambiance and small details, such as seating up against the window air conditioner and a little dust here and there- I pay attention to everything! Overall, I enjoyed this restaurant and would definitely go back.
We have always loved this restaurant, but had not been there in a while. Since the last time we were there, it has been updated and is now under new management. The food and service are still superior. They were very accommodating to our requests. The only problem I have with this place is the amount of traffic that you have to fight through to get here. That is not something they can take care of, but sometimes you need to put up with the traffic in order to get to a good place. Parking can be challenging as well.
Even though the restaurant was apparently understaffed and our order took 40 min., the food was amazing, well priced for the area, and we had someone playing piano for us upstairs. We were also provided with a discount for the wait and given a personal apology. Will definitely give this place another try.
Always happy to eat here. The food is always excellent.
The food was above delicious. The ambiance was cozy and romantic and the piano music was a nice touch. What a wonderful dinner we enjoyed!
I straight up wanted to invite myself into the kitchen and take notes. First of all you could taste the freshness of the ingredients they started with. I had no interest in eating the bread and pesto until I actually tasted it and man. The pesto was so bright. And the bread was delicious to boot. I mean seriously. The calamari may have ruined all other calamari for me. The squid was so tender. Then the gnocchi was so damn good. I mean like ‘can I pay the chef to teach me to make it?!’ good. And the cheesecake the owner's mother makes is perfection. It was a seemingly simple and yet elegant meal. We stumbled upon this place after walking around DC all afternoon primarily because it looked good and was close to our hotel. I will not soon forget how good this dinner was. I damn near want to send them a thank you note.
I can’t talk enough about the hospitality of this place. It felt like I was in someone’s home ..good food and great people
Delicious real Italian food and excellent service! Outdoor seating area is perfect for a nice evening. All the food was wonderful, but would definitely recommend anything with pesto - it was on point!
I was looking forward to trying this restaurant since it had a 4-star rating. However, the drinks were just ok, the Osso Bucco was tough, and the Seafood special had no flavor and was over cooked. On top of all that, a waitress/bartender took our credit card to pay the bill, but then proceeded to chat with other patrons as if no one was in the restaurant let alone waiting to leave. I had to interrupt their conversation to get our credit card processed. Perhaps they had an off night?
The freshly made linguini was amazing. Alfredo sauce with shrimp just perfect. The owner and staff were very attentive and we had a wonderful experience. Would definitely go back again for that heavenly pasta when in the area.
Would recommend to a friend only if they had plenty of time. In short, arrived at 6:30 pm, waited about five mins before someone came from the back to seat us. Placed our order, then waited approx. 45 mins for our food. Talked with someone else that night and they waited 1 hr. before their food arrived. Food was very good, but you have to be patient
Excellent, local place for italian food. Their Eggplant Parmesan is the best I have ever tried, cooked so that it has the texture of a cloud and so delicious. The live piano and pianist are amazing, hard to beat for a date night, or fancier dinner with visiting family or friends.
On our annual Cherry Blossom Festival trip to Washington, my wife and I slipped through a portal at 305 Washington Street in Alexandria, VA. A humble setting, nothing to jump up and down about, but a hidden gem.
Climbing a steep staircase, a turn to the right and a room as close to Italy as one could get. The pleasant, young lady ushered us to two tables and we were invited to pick a table between one in the center of room and another immediately in front of a baby grand piano. We picked the one close to the piano.
After our wine warm-up, we ordered the Caesar salad. Ohhh... simply heaven! Balance, romaine lettuce blended with anchovies and crotons forced a discipline to put the darned fork down before you had no room to eat the main reason for coming there in the first place.
With the beautiful music flowing from a wonderful pianist, our order of ossobuco arrived. It was incredible! The silky brown gravy infused with wine flavors, lathering carrots, onion, mushrooms and the like flowed beyond the tender veal shanks beyond to the delicious chef nurtured pasta.
This place is a sine qua non for lovers of fine cuisine by a master chef. Each and every year will find us back again.

Service was good. Our server made sure we got everything we ordered, and made sure our drinks were topped off. The food was a big let down. They have a list of house specialties and we got veal cavatelli and risotto carbonara. The cavatelli was few and of irregular size and loaded with a bland tomato sauce. The carbonara very rich and dense. At $26 dollars each, not worth it.
Great atmosphere with excellent piano player and friendly staff. Good was average. Prices a bit high given quality of food.
Sing-a-long night was a blast! Such fun to join in with the great piano player over such a great meal. The fresh homemade pastas are Devine and each of us has a different sauce, all were delicious. The calamari salad appetizer was a meal in itself.
Too full to enjoy dessert.
I like the restaurant very much. The pesto served with the bread is excellent!
My only complaints are that the lighting in the dining room is very low and it makes it very hard to read the menus and see the bill. Also, the piano music is lovely but when you have a group of people, it is hard to hear and yak.
Probably the worst Italian food I have ever had. The rigatoni was all sauce and no pasta. And it was boiling hot!
The sauce was flat. Not nearly enough salt. There was no salt used when the pasta was cooked. The pork was tough. Definitely not slow cooked as stated on menu.
Salad dressing had absolutely no flavor.
Simple requests were completely ignored.
A terrible experience A waste of money
Loved our table we had next to the piano. It was 6 of us and we had the best service.
Food was ok :(
Absolutely wonderful evening at the lovely and charming La Trattoria. The service was impeccable, the food delicious, David at the piano made the evening so much more special and the ambiance was warm and so inviting. Highly recommend!
Great place. Good food. Talented pianist.
The restaurant is in an ideal location for going to shows at Little Theatre of Alexandria. Ambiance of dining room is lovely and piano player terrific.
Food was good, but service was very slow. But, yes we would go back.
The staff and our server Michele and food were all great. All guests enjoyed the restaurant.
First time there since the renovation and we loved it. The food and service were excellent. We sat in the 3 top in front of the window downstairs. We loved the ambiance but could use just a smidge more lighting. We checked out the deli for future use. Can't wait!
Great food and atmosphere. Great place for date night and to get out of the house
Exellent as always ... great service and vibe! Enjoyed the live music during dinner while dining upstairs.
The new deli / shop added on the left side of the restaurant is a great idea, hope it takes off , the area needs a true Italian deli/store.
