La Tasca - Penn Quarter Ratings and Reviews
We were so disappointed with this trip to La Tasca. We were seated in the back in an empty section with boxes of glasses on nearby tables. I didn’t really care as long as we were seated. It took 12 minutes to be acknowledged by a server. Although we were given a HH menu and ordered drinks from it when the bill came they were full price. We don’t have time to argue as we were meeting friends and my husband practically had to go into the kitchen to get the bill so we could pay. Very disappointing, and with all the options nearby, we most likely won’t be back.
The Spanish tapas, while not all that varied, were authentic and tasty and the paella marinera was surprisingly good. Try the rabas (fried calamari) as well. Wine by the glass was good quality if a bit stingy on the pouring — maybe better just to order a bottle if your budget permits.
Tapas were bland and mediocre at best. Literally tasted like bar food from a frozen bag that had been refried. The calamari was chewy, cheese curds stale and tasted or processed American cheese, shrimp bland and oily, the lamb meat balls were decent. Service was slow, unfriendly, and unappealing as the environment was also dissspointing. This spot was basically boring with no appeal and completely lacked luster. The only way this place is still in business is due to its locations across from the stadium. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
Zero service! 35 minutes to get our drinks and one was wrong. another 20 for the replacement. Bread arrived after 50 minutes the oil about 5 minutes later, and the water never. Food was also very slow, and several times incorrect. We had allowed 90 minutes to eat before Verizon center performance. The last dish arrived as we were leaving.
Food was varied. Some dishes were very good - beet salad, and some mediocre - patatas bravas.
I had family in town for a show and we decided to go to La Tasca for pre show drinks and food. Our service was absolutely the worst I've ever received in a restaurant. I was embarrassed for bringing my family. The food was excellent, as always, but it was impossible to get our waiter's attention. Sometimes he'd make eye contact and then shake his head, say he was sorry, and walk away. Several drinks never even made it to the table. We go to the Old Town La Tasca all the time, but I don't think I'd ever go back to this restaurant.
Our table was ready when we arrived around happy hour. The happy hour specials are fairly priced and there are enough drink options to satisfy everyone. Good place to get dinner before a game at the Verizon Center. Our server was polite and attentive. Ordered a paella valenciana, which was pretty good. It does take a little over half an hour to get a paella, but they are good and feed about 3 people. Also ordered the empanadas, would recommend beef over chicken.
Service level was quite a struggle. Several things we’re missing and one had to be inquired about multiple times. Waitress often disappeared. The stand out in good service was a runner (very tall guy) who was great about removing used plates when he brought out new dishes.
The food was very good. The service was OK. Checked with us when we first arrived, we were not ready to order, but then it seemed like she did not come back for 15 minutes. After that misfire she was very attentive.
We started as a party of 4, then the fifth joined us about 30 minutes later. When we received our bill there was a 20% service charge included, we were surprised by that. Then, three others ordered a second glass of wine after we settled the bill, and a 20% service charge was added to that bill too. We thought that was very unusual.
The food served there is not to what I had expected according to the reviews. I am Spanish.
Spanish potato omelette: Tasteless, the potato and the onion were raw and cut into big pieces. There was mayonnaise on top of it (we never put mayonnaise on omelettes in Spain).
Artichokes and cured ham: Ham was too salty and bad-quality artichokes.
We booked this as a quick dinner and drinks spot before a concert at the Verizon center. The service was awesome! The food was great - we were able to order off of the Happy Hour Menu. I've been to the La Tasca in Alexandria as well, and both are just outstanding - one of my favorite places to go because they have something for everyone!
The cons: It’s a very loud space; one of our tapas never arrived; our server wasn’t very good about checking in with us, or timely in getting us our check; the aforementioned undelivered tapas was on our bill, so we had to ask to have it removed.
The pros: we loved all of the different tapas that we tried, and the paella as well; we arrived 20 minutes before our reservation time and they still sat us right away; I was able to get a reservation with less than 24-hours notice on a night when there was a concert at Verizon.
