Consistency over the years makes this restaurant so great. The employees have been the same—this tells a lot. Great team work from welcoming you to cooking, serving. Food is excellent—it never goes wrong and never disappoints me. I am a gourmet cook and going to Taberna for lunch or dinner continues to be a great treat year after year.
The food and the service was excellent. We were celebrating our annual Christmas lunch and it was memorable. We would definitely go back and I have already recommended Taberna del Alabardaro to some friends.
Nice, quiet restaurant with great food and exceptional service.
What a lovely place! The service was attentive and so helpful, but not too stuffy. Such authentic dishes and great Spanish wine choices. The best part is that you can have a conversation with your table and hear each other! It is truly the best Spanish restaurant in DC.
Service was superb! So considerate and thoughtful. The kindest people in the restaurant business.
The Flamenco show/artists, especially the singers, were excellent! We could have enjoyed more of the singing and guitar and less of the zapatadas (although the dancers were fabulous, the loudness in a small environment made it hard to do/say anything else)! We did note that the service of food was timed very well in observance of the show...well done!
Incredible dining experience.
Wonderful service. Delish food
Exceptional restaurant for elegant Spanish cuisine, with well-prepared food, outstanding service and quiet ambiance.
Simply amazing food! Great service and the smell drove us crazy! :)
It's been several years since we ate at Taberna del Alabardero and it's as good as ever. They have some of the best Spanish food we've had outside of Spain. So we did the five course tasting menu since we couldn't decide. We started with gazpacho (cold tomato soup), carpaccio and grilled octopus, grilled tuna, and beef sirloin with the wine pairing at each course. Followed by desert.
Since our last visit, we've been to the Ribiero del Duero region of Spain to sample their wines. So I asked for a red from the region to go with the sirloin. The selection from the region is excellent, it goes on for an entire page. Maybe 20 or more wines to choose from. And of course, they have reds and whites from other areas of Spain, along with a few from the US.
The only downside is that the noise level is high.
Great food and service. One person in our party has serious allergy issues. Called and discussed with GM before booking. Chef came to our table to discuss options and possible substitutions to maintain integrity of dishes.
Atmosphere and fine dining make this a favorite special restaurant
The Taberna contains all the memories of our life in Madrid...the food, the ambience, the service, the friendliness. The tapas were authentic; we might as well have been in the Plaza Major! The cordero was excellent! This is the place to dine!
Great service, authentic food, enjoyable evening, unique environment!
Still very good after all of these years. I recommend it for special occasions. It has authentic Spanish cuisine.
Excellent! Food quality and service are impeccable! Being going there for years and i never got out with a disappointment! The cod was delicious and the paella is outstanding!
We were there during happy hour and sat outside on a beautiful November evening. On past visits, I'd usually ordered paella but, tonight, we ordered tapas and sangria, as they were part of the happy hour offerings. I love Jaleo, and expected the tapas at Taberna to suffer in comparison. However, they were excellent! We ordered quite a variety of tapas, and then ordered a second round of the tortilla de patata and calamari. The pitcher of sangria was very good, as was the service -- attentive without being obtrusive. Overall, we had a wonderful time and we will certainly return many times!
This is our "Go To" place for special occasions and now I wonder why we are not there more often? Great wine selection, great fish dishes, great environment, overall a wonderful experience for all 4 of us!
La Taberna del Alabardero never disappoints and it's always a "special occasion," even for a weekday late lunch after a morning at a museum nearby. The food is delicious, the service astonishing. This last visit we had a recommended crisp, dry white wine, jamon Iberico as an appetizer, black rice and baby squid paella for lunch, and a coffee chaser. It was perfect.
Beautiful restaurant with great service, atmosphere and food. Would definitely recommend.
Spanish fare with a Spanish flair ... more than tapas, but excellent for that, too! Super service top things off nicely.
Excellent paella and sangria for my friend’s birthday. I had the vegan and she had the seafood option - and both really enjoyed it along with the gluten-free tapas. The service was extraordinarily good! Thank you!
Absolutely perfect! The ambiance is wonderful, the staff is excellent and the authentic food was delish! Is definitely a “do over”!
Remains my all time favourite in DC. Outstanding service and attention, friendly and well informed servers, menus offer good variety and always updated with interesting options e.g. tapas menu, tasting options, etc. Quality of presentation is exquisite. Good and well priced wine selection. One defining attribute for me is the CONSISTENTLY high standard maintained by the Taberna throughout the many years I have been dining at this restaurant, while in DC and now living overseas. Amazing!
Great ambiance, the food was authentic and delicious, I was greeted in Spanish and I had a great time. My friend was amazed by the experience and I admit that the food is authentic and prepared to the detail
The food was superb, and service exquisite. A part of every trip to DC.
Best Spanish restaurant in the U.S. Dined at La Taberna in 1991 and it was excellent then.
After visiting Spain more than 100 times since then, I can say it is the very best Spanish restaurant on this side of the Atlantic. ( We also have a house in Spain now)
I felt swept into Madrid the second we entered. Elegant, señorial, attentive service, lovely bread, table clothes, decor. Gambas al pil pil authentic,
Chipiriones with rice lovely tapa portion, cordero
Aragones hearty; PSI my favorite wine and the same for the torrija. My husband loved his arroz con leche and 43.
Un magnífico restaurante, se come igual o mejor que en el de Madrid. Una buena selección de finos y vinos de Jerez. Servicio amable y agradable.
Fantastic meal on a weekend DC trip. My wife and son split the squid and shrimp paella and it beat our favorite Barcelona restaurant. My tuna was perfect and the daughter's filet was also excellent. The Torres Jaime I provided a proper finish.
One of my favorite restaurants in DC. I have been coming here almost 27 years and it never disappoints. If you haven’t been, you should.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in DC and have been many times. It never disappoints. It is pricey and a special treat but well worth it. I enjoyed the flamenco and roast suckling pig special (which I've also had in Madrid but wasn't as good as at La Taberna)! Great service, ambiance and Sangria too!
We thouroughly enjoyed this experience. The red sangria was very subtle, not too sweet. The small plate tapas were great, recommend the shrimp in garlic ..
.yumm! We opted for the chefs 5 course and we're glad we did. Nice tastings of several main items and dessert, the octopus was excellent!! Service was spot-on . We recommend!!
My mother is from Spain and this place reminded me of (La Roja)! Also, the service was incredible. The staff treated every patrion like a royal guest. There was literally a different server for every course and even one dedicated to serving you water. The music was authentic Flamenco, with a volume perfect enough to compliment any conversation. The food was delicious and the ambience was royal comfort.
The Taberna is resting on its laurels as the only Spanish restaurant in downtown DC. The service is good, but the food is insipid and uninspired. And it's seriously overpriced.
I want to like this restaurant but for the price it's difficult. We went for the cochonillo, which was one of my all time favorite dishes that I had in Spain. Here is was very expensive and somewhat dry. Overall we were just disappointed. While the appetizers were quite good, it was all expensive for what you get. The wine was enjoyable but we went down the street for dessert.
Extraordinary service and food. Everyone goes out of their way to make your visit pleasant
Best Spanish restaurant in town for traditional food
Just as good now as it was 10 years ago. So nice to go to a restaurant with authentic regional cuisine, white table cloths and acceptable noise level.
Lobster claw was undercooked, otherwise food good
