La Taberna del Alabardero Ratings and Reviews
If you like seafood, try the lobster, clam, mussels paella. It is delicious and has a generous portion of lobster. The wait staff is excellent without being intrusive. Our party of five all enjoyed the food they ordered. It is great for some to order a full entree while others choose to order tapas. It all worked out well and we were able to have conversation without having to raise our voices. This restaurant in wonderful. If you haven't been there, give it a try and learn what you have been missing. Bon appetit!
Consistency over the years makes this restaurant so great. The employees have been the same—this tells a lot. Great team work from welcoming you to cooking, serving. Food is excellent—it never goes wrong and never disappoints me. I am a gourmet cook and going to Taberna for lunch or dinner continues to be a great treat year after year.
What a lovely place! The service was attentive and so helpful, but not too stuffy. Such authentic dishes and great Spanish wine choices. The best part is that you can have a conversation with your table and hear each other! It is truly the best Spanish restaurant in DC.
The Flamenco show/artists, especially the singers, were excellent! We could have enjoyed more of the singing and guitar and less of the zapatadas (although the dancers were fabulous, the loudness in a small environment made it hard to do/say anything else)! We did note that the service of food was timed very well in observance of the show...well done!
It's been several years since we ate at Taberna del Alabardero and it's as good as ever. They have some of the best Spanish food we've had outside of Spain. So we did the five course tasting menu since we couldn't decide. We started with gazpacho (cold tomato soup), carpaccio and grilled octopus, grilled tuna, and beef sirloin with the wine pairing at each course. Followed by desert.
Since our last visit, we've been to the Ribiero del Duero region of Spain to sample their wines. So I asked for a red from the region to go with the sirloin. The selection from the region is excellent, it goes on for an entire page. Maybe 20 or more wines to choose from. And of course, they have reds and whites from other areas of Spain, along with a few from the US.
The only downside is that the noise level is high.
We were there during happy hour and sat outside on a beautiful November evening. On past visits, I'd usually ordered paella but, tonight, we ordered tapas and sangria, as they were part of the happy hour offerings. I love Jaleo, and expected the tapas at Taberna to suffer in comparison. However, they were excellent! We ordered quite a variety of tapas, and then ordered a second round of the tortilla de patata and calamari. The pitcher of sangria was very good, as was the service -- attentive without being obtrusive. Overall, we had a wonderful time and we will certainly return many times!
La Taberna del Alabardero never disappoints and it's always a "special occasion," even for a weekday late lunch after a morning at a museum nearby. The food is delicious, the service astonishing. This last visit we had a recommended crisp, dry white wine, jamon Iberico as an appetizer, black rice and baby squid paella for lunch, and a coffee chaser. It was perfect.
Remains my all time favourite in DC. Outstanding service and attention, friendly and well informed servers, menus offer good variety and always updated with interesting options e.g. tapas menu, tasting options, etc. Quality of presentation is exquisite. Good and well priced wine selection. One defining attribute for me is the CONSISTENTLY high standard maintained by the Taberna throughout the many years I have been dining at this restaurant, while in DC and now living overseas. Amazing!
Best Spanish restaurant in the U.S. Dined at La Taberna in 1991 and it was excellent then.
After visiting Spain more than 100 times since then, I can say it is the very best Spanish restaurant on this side of the Atlantic. ( We also have a house in Spain now)
I felt swept into Madrid the second we entered. Elegant, señorial, attentive service, lovely bread, table clothes, decor. Gambas al pil pil authentic,
Chipiriones with rice lovely tapa portion, cordero
Aragones hearty; PSI my favorite wine and the same for the torrija. My husband loved his arroz con leche and 43.
