Everything great all around. Great food and attentive servers.
Flamenco night was great, but WAY too loud for the room. Diners could not talk to each other.
Recommendation in Tourism pamphlet..for our one free night in DC (. which is not always a good guage of a fine dining experience..). but it was excellent in all regards... authentic Spanish cuisine, and wine knowledge, as well as personable and attentive service. We would be repeat customers if local.
It was quiet on Jan 3 as many people seemed to still be on their holiday and also it was during the government furlough. For me it was good because usually it is very difficult to get a table at Taberna after office hour. Nice overall, but I felt that the waiters were trying a bit too much to get us order wines/alcoholic beverages. The blank ink squid was delicious!!
Really lovely Spanish restaurant that delivers with excellent service and delicious food. Value gets dinged a few stars because it is quite expensive for many dishes that are supposed to be very approachable and affordable. That said, tapas in DC are very expensive and Taberna del Alabardero delivers the best I’ve had here. The paella was lacking socarrat, but was otherwise very delicious. Selections of wine, cava, and sherry were lovely, and they brought us some complimentary bubbles and dessert in honor of our anniversary. Fantastic experience, and we can’t wait to go back.
A wonderful, traditional Spanish restaurant. No pretense. Great food and service. I had been wanting
to come here for years. I was not disappointed.
Superb as usual!
This restaurant is generally excellent but disappointing on this occasion. The lamb stew was full of bones with no warning, The service started well but was slow at the end and there were add-ons to the price that seemed incompatible with the fixed price menu.
Been here on multiple occasions over the past 20 years, best experience yet
Always one of the highlights of my time in D.C. The atmosphere returns me to Spain, the food is expertly prepared and elegantly presented, and the service is both personal and sophisticated.
Taberna is one of my two favorite/go-to establishments in Washington for meetings/meals that matter to me personally. Service, food, ambiance, and sense of connection to one of our world's greatest nations (Spain!)/community are all excellent. My only wish is for more options for non-meat eaters. I *LOVE* this place for its authenticity, but that means there's a lot of meat on the menu. That said, the non-meat tapas are all quite good. And the coffee is excellent.
Beautiful restaurant, great service, wonderful food. They gave us a great corner booth near the window for our anniversary. Nice card on the table. Complimentary cava and dessert. The pulpo and paella were fantastic
The service was terrific, as was the room. The atmosphere was lovely.
The lobster in the paella was mush. We complained and they brought us another lobster which was very undercooked. The taste of the paella was okay, not great.
The desserts were very nice.
I would return but order something other than the paella.
Absolutely fantastic, and memorable night out. Staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. Every coarse was delicious. The atmosphere was perfect for our romantic birthday dinner. Thank you
The food was lackluster. Fish was under-seasoned and boring.
The staff is amazing and the food is great. They took care of us very well. A great combination of a very familiar place with high-quality gastronomy. I do not remember his name, but the waiter from Uruguay was just fantastic.
Outstanding food, service, and ambiance.
Wonderful paella and good sized portions for a place serving tapas in the US. Service was outstanding. They had live flamenco which made it extra special.
The food was good, but as we know Spanish fare isn't really well know as far as entrees are concerned. Having said that the entrees were average and a tad overpriced. However, the tapas were very good.
The place to eat spanish food in D.C. The lobster Paella is outstanding. Wine selection is good. Worth to visit while in Washington.
Excellent experience if you are looking for authentic Spanish cuisine plus a special service from all staff. I highly recommend this place. One of my favorites in DC.
We were staying the weekend in DC after coming during the week for work. We wanted something other than a steakhouse or overpriced contemporary cuisine of the moment. We picked this restaurant based only on the online reviews, but we made a great choice this time. The Garlic Shrimp and Grilled Vegetables appetizers were excellent. The Paella with Duck for 2 was very good - not overcooked and had great flavors. Contino Rioja Reserva went well with the entire meal. We were happily surprised by the live guitar and dancing. Both were fantastic. Lastly, the service was the best part of the entire meal - attentive and helpful but not intrusive or overbearing. We had a great 2 hour experience and highly recommend Taberna del Alabardero.
They pay close attention to their diners. The wine steward is great. It's not the usual lobbyist crowd. The local Spanish community likes it and so do I.
The service, wine and ambience were great! We loved the appetizers--very tasty. We shared a duck paella, which was very good although the duck was a little dry. Overall, though, a good experience.
If you can't make it to Spain, La Taberna del Alaberdero is the next best thing! Food is authentic and delicious. Four of us had a wonderful special occasion meal.
Muy auténtico, me recuerda muchos lugares en Madrid. Buenas tapas, buen vino, meseros muy amables y atentos. Un poco caro nada más pero vale.
Absolutely amazing experience. This is my favorite restaurant in Washington DC. Love their amazing cuisine and outstanding professional service. It's a complete experience! I highly recommend La Taberna, especially if you like Spanish cuisine .
Birthday for my wife
Authentic Spanish fare, great ambiance and superb service with courteous service. We enjoyed immensely the restaurant.
After reading the great reviews, we were a bit disappointed.
First the good:
- Very nice decor and ambiance
- Nice big pitcher of sangria for very reasonable price during Happy Hour
- Croquets were delicious!
What could be better:
- Service in bar was not good
- There are 3 small tables in the bar. When we arrived, 1 was occupied and the other 2 had ‘Reserved’ signs on them.
When we asked if we could sit at one (because the seats at the bar were all taken), they said yes and removed the sign, but left it on the other.
No one sat at the other table for the 1.5 hours we were there - also when you make online dinner reservations, you get a note that there are no reservations for Happy Hour, so we wondered why they then ‘reserved’ those tables.
- Calamari was very tough and chewy
- Paella was pricey, not very flavorful and was predominantly rice
Note that the address is a bit misleading, as the restaurant itself is actually on 18th St. and not on ‘I’.
We were walking and walked past it twice before a nice local finally pointed us in the right direction.
Amazing food and service. We had trouble finding using google maps but so happy we kept looking. The service was excellent and the food delicious. Definitely worth the long walk to find it. The dessert cocktails were so fun and tasty.
When I compare restaurants I think of food and service and both are excellent at La Taberna del Albardero. But any restaurant experience starts when you come in the door and get a table and that's when La Taberna gets a headstart over most of its competition. The room is beautiful and we were seated at a lovely table where we were both comfortable -- I'm tall and my wife is short, so this isn't often the case. Our waiter was excellent and he was supported by the head waiter, a young server who took care of the bread and water and a sommelier who helped with the wines. The food itself was also lovely. We had been prepared to share tapas and that would have been very good I'm sure, but they had special selections of fresh fish that tempted us. I had salmon and she had swordfish, both excellent, as was everything else that accompanied these main courses.
Really enjoyed our amazing meal, the excellent service, cool ambience - and our conversation without intrusions. Thanks so much!
Food was lovely. Service was great. A shame my tuna was a little over the requested temperature, however it was still tasty.
It was a beautiful experience, great food and amazing service!
Celebrated a friends birthday with lunch. It was both of our first visit. Great food and excellent service. Our only regret is not coming sooner. The ambiance is semi-formal, perfect for a business lunch.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted and seated at our table. We were promptly presented with menus and served from a basket offering a choice of fresh baked bread and bread sticks. When I informed our waiter about my gluten allergy, a basket with two warm gluten free rolls were quickly delivered to the table.
Ordering tapas was easy because the menus list symbols to identify items as gluten, dairy and/or nut free. All the dishes we ordered were made with fresh ingredients and delicious.
The serving staff all work together very well as at team. Our iced tea glasses were never less than half full and with a few seconds of finishing a serving dish or putting down my knife and fork at the end our meal, the empty dishes were whisked away without intrusion. The waiter provided dessert menus along with suggestions for gluten free options. We chose fresh berries, which included small cookies for my friend - served on a separate plate.
They have several fresh fish specials this month along with other special events, including a live flamenco night. They also offer a $30 per person Executive Lunch menu. On the way out the door we were provided with a small gift bag of cookies and the list of upcoming events.
My friend and I plan to visit again soon, for another weekday lunch or dinner with our husbands.
Good wine list, good tapas selections, amazing paella, but it was the people that made it a great dining experience. Already booking another table!
Unfortunately, present management at Taberna del Alabardero has decided to include "fine-print" in their $30 lunch menu. Though it is supposed to be a $30 menu, you need to carefully pick your choices: some have additional cost in small print at the bottom of each choice. So rather than getting a $30 menu, you are really getting a $40 or possibly higher lunch menu. Diner beware.
Awesome tapas etc.
