Escargots were too salty! Lamb was superb. Soufle was also superb
Love La Sardine. Consistently a great pick for date night.
La Sardine continues to offer quality food & service, at a reasonable price, in a casual environment.
Exceptional in every way! Tuesday night half price special is maybe the best deal on the planet! Don’t miss it!
We had an incredible lunch experience and will absolutely be back soon. Loved the escargot, mussels and the rainbow trout. Bread was actually incredible as well.
We always have great food and wine at this place. The waitstaff is always welcoming and on point when it comes to bringing food out at the right time, refilling your glass, etc. The tables can be small, especially for two people, so having a waitstaff understand how to time things appropriately so you're not stacking or removing things to fit, is awesome. We love it here and will return often!
Very fine wine and food but very skimpy Foie gras, at less than 2 ounces certainly. If you don’t want to serve it, than don’t. But don’t pretend that the accompaniments that resembled foie gras are the real thing. We spent $700 here and that severely detracted from the overall experience due to the sense of deception. So to Nikolai and the family, please consider our comment seriously.
Wonderful restaurant, staff and food! Very cozy warm ambience! Very authentic French food! We LOVE this place!
This establishment would have received 5 stars had the Dover Sole has been fresh, but it did not smell nor taste fresh! The appetizers were outstanding. Unfortunately, there are too many restaurants in Chicago to return to one where you had a bad experience.
The service was slow and disinterested. Soup was cold and got an attitude from the server when requested that it be warmed. Steak Frites was boring. We used to love this place. Will not go again.
It's special every time we go there. Which is every time we are in Toronto. Authentic, great-tasting food surrounded by an energy that is exciting but not frenetic.
Everything was really salty and the souffle was pretty much raw and mushy.
Good and service satisfactory. Restaurant very busy for early Saturday night causing less response than normal for stellar service.
Ordered 3 different mains included coq au vin, black cod and steak frites. These are signature dishes here but were less than stellar. The steak frites was particularly tough chewy and poor quality . Could have got a better piece of meat at Aldi.
Place is very average for high prices. Service was also average.
The vibe was very exciting. It really was like a Parisian neighborhood bistro! The place feels authentic and the staff is knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. The food was magnificent: my wife had specials: celery soup and medallions of pork, which she loved. My classic onion soup was in my top 3 anywhere, and my roast sable was light and fresh with a unique sauce. Wines were no bargain but much to choose from. Desserts looked great but we were too full! We definitely will return!
Haven't been to La Sardine on a Tuesday for years and it's just as I remember. Food was excellent, service impeccable can't wait to come back.
Always a wonderful meal. Pumpkin soup special perfect for the chilly evening. My rack of lamb done to perfection. My friend couldn’t decide between steak frites or the hanger steak with mashed potatoes...he did the hanger steak with a side of frites. And chocolate soufflé was just air... can’t wait to return.
Delicious endive salad and I loved the roast chicken. My husband ordered the special hangar steak. Both of our entrees had good flavor but didn’t seem “hot off the grill.” We love this restaurant - attentive staff, nice wines, wonderful French bread. We will always return.
The kitchen is outstanding. Food was delicious. But after 20 years of going to this restaurant, we had the worst service ever. Not sure what was wrong. Waitress spent most of her time looking at her cell phone. Let's hope it was an aberration.
We were there to celebrate success in publishing & grant submissions. Catching up with friends in the neuroscience community from both coasts, & they raved about the whole experience. Proof again that Chicago is the restaurant capital of the nation.
We recently dined at La Sardine (10/19/19). In general the food was superb. One of the featured specials was a pork shank and it was simply heavenly, as was the fish. Steak-frites was a bit tough, though that's somewhat to be expected with a entrecote style cut. The highlight of the evening was the soufflé (as is often the case). Of particular note was the pistachio soufflé: best I've ever tasted.
Chris and John are great hosts behind and in front of the bar!
I love Le Sardine, it’s one of our favorite French restaurants in the city. Every dish is executed expertly and so delicious. Seriously have not had a bad meal here.
Went to La Sardine Saturday night prior to a concert at the United Center. The food and service were excellent. Had a cool neighborhood bistro vibe to it. We started with the mussels that were cooked well, tender, with great flavor. We ordered the gnocchi (which had a good french twist to it) and the steak frites. Both were done well and tasty very good. Had the pistachio / honey soufflé that was crazy good. Overall, great experience. The only thing that was odd was that there were only two other tables seated when we arrived and the host seated us within 2 feet of another table that was already seated. Felt odd sitting within arm reach of another couple while the rest of the restaurant was empty. They did the same thing with another party and when the party questioned it, they were told there was NO option to move them elsewhere and the host had to seat as directed. Would definitely recommend though. Food and service were great.
Food was outstanding as always!
The Tuesday Prix Fixe is an amazing deal. Bouillabaisse was divine... escargots super garlicky and tender. The souffle was perfection!! Super happy with this place. Will be back!
The service (especially our server Dan) and the meal was suburb. Authentically French cuisine. Nice atmosphere.
Not the place to go for intimate and relaxing dinner. Everything seemed very rushed
Outstanding. As always. Service and food are nonpareil
We had an 8:15 reservation. By 8:30, we still were not seated, so we sat at the bar and ordered oysters and two Farmers Daughters cocktails which were both incredible. The bartender was great, too. By 9 PM, we were seated. It took several minutes for our server to greet us. She asked if we wanted another drink, and before we could say anything but "yes" she walked away. We were pretty hungry at this point and wanted to order our food ASAP. Another 15 minutes or so, she returned. We ordered the Oxtail Gnocchi appetizer, which came quickly. It was divine! Small, but delicious. We agreed that this would probably be worth the wait! She recommended the Boullabaise & The Duck as two of her favorite entrees. My fiance ordered the boullabaise, and I had the duck. I've only ordered duck a few times, but never have I ever eaten rare/medium-rare duck. I googled to see if it was edible/normal and apparently it is, but it was awful. She did not come check on us after we got our food, so I wasn't even able to share my dissatisfaction. I was so hungry that I ate my polenta & broccoli and just left all the duck meat. She said nothing when she came to take our plates. The boullabaise was incredibly bland. Tasted like un-seasoned fish dropped in veggie broth. No flavor. All in all, the app and drinks were great, but the entrees were awful. Especially for those being the server's top two recommendations! We probably won't be back, but if we ever return, it will be for happy hour only.
Our waiter (Yoshi?) was very accommodating to our hodge podge collection of people, and was patient with everyone’s order. Food was excellent and wine pairing suggestions were on point. Dessert was outstanding as well.
A Friday night dinner with my wife and a Friend. We had reservations at 5:00 and arrived early and they opened the bar for us, which was very nice. The French Manhattan is a nice twist on a classic. For appetizers we all had the escargot. I've been working in New York on an assignment for six months and have a serious snail addiction. The escargot was the best I've had compared to Paris and NY; wonderful balance of flavors. I had the venison, my wife the black cod, and my friend the steak frites. All were outstanding and we were very happy with our choices. Our server was attentive, informative, but not overbearing. My dessert was the crème brûlée and I was too busy loving it to notice what others ordered! The crème brûlée was another "best" with the addition of toasted pumpkin seeds.
We had a terrific meal at la Sardine. We started with cocktails - champagne and beer before dinner. The we had a great Bordeaux’s our waiter recommended. We had soup and the endive salad to start with and we both had the leg of lamb which was outstanding. We finished the meal with the apple tart and ice cream and the grand mariner soufflé. Coffee ended the evening. Our waiter, Dan, was outstanding as always and the service was nicely timed. this is a real gem.
Overall it was a wonderful and memorable experience. The food was delicious, I even ordered steak tartare which I havent had in decades and it was great. The half price wine (Morgon) was perfect. Lovely restaurant and good service. We have two criticisms. We ordered Sole Meuniere for two. The waiter brought the cooked piece of fish to the table to show us, and then went off to have it plated. I was worried because it was several minutes before it came back, and it wasn't hot. I absolutely should have sent it back and had the chef warm it up, but I didn't want to make a fuss, so it was my fault for not bringing it to the server's attention. The fish and sauce were fantastic, so that wasnt an issue. The other small complaint is their chose of bread. While it tasted fine, it was a little too rustic and heavy for the meal, we would have preferred something much lighter which wouldn't have filled us up as much. Plus, it should have been warm. In spite of these two minor issues, I would definitely recommend La Sardine for a superb French restaurant experience.
Some culinary sins and service sins were committed and 9-28-19. The Server seemed more concerned with the tables that were drinking then a customer who overpays for Perrier (which I am ok with price wise, I ordered it) I get that booze where the money is for a Server, none the less I felt like we were overlooked. Worst sins were the culinary ones. The chicken I ordered was burned and dry, they have done a much better job in my past visits. Worst of was the Chocolate Soufflé that is basically the reason we go to La Sardine. The one thing I could count on was desert being consistent, it most certainly was not. It was very heavy on the chocolate to point that it was more like chocolate lava cake than a soufflé. The consistency was like a cake that was not fully baked vs the soufflé I have eaten for over ten years. It was a total buzz kill and most unfortunate.
It’s really a shame that I find myself writing this review. I have been to La Sardine more times than I can count over past 10 years, I purposed marriage to my wife at this very restaurant. We have brought are daughter for fine a dining experiences. I will not be going back.
The food and wine pairing were delicious. The waitress was Superb very attentive and knowledgeable.
I was disappointed overall which is such a shame since the restaurant is next door to my condo and I love French food. My friend also was not impressed. We had heard such great things. The escargot was chewy, the salmon dish wasn’t seasoned well and was served to us barely lukewarm. The service wasn’t great, it overall was mediocre at best. Out of the whole experience, our positive was the soufflé, which we waited so long for that we ended up taking a bite and taking it to go; nevertheless, the chocolate and the raspberry soufflés were both delicious. If I were ever to return - it would be because of the soufflés.
Always an enjoyable place to have a meal - good people and good food.
