Always love coming here before a movie for happy hour margaritas and the appetizer sampler, street tacos, or just a big bowl of guac!

Arrived at La Sandia just before our reservation time and was immediately seated. Service was prompt, polite, friendly and accurate. We chose to sit on the "patio" (facing the mall), and the noise was a bit more than we'd like; I recommend sitting "inside" (the whole restaurant is in the mall).
The food was delicious! We had the appetizer platter, chicken mole and the carnitas. All dishes were tasty and beautifully presented. As a native of El Paso, Texas, I can say authoritatively this IS authentic Mexican food.

Service and atmosphere were great! Wasn't too pleased with my meal (carnitas entrée) as the meat was very fatty. I had to pick around most of it and left pretty hungry, unfortunately.

Love the carnitas here and the table top guacamole was great albeit could have used a bit more salt. My friends ordered enchiladas and they looked great. When I am looking for authentic Mexican food I often go to Sandia. It also helps that they have good servers. Altogether a very positive dining experience.

Based on the other reviews, I had high expectations for La Sandia. We arrived at 6 PM on a weekday and it was rather dead in the restaurant, but the bar seemed to have a good business going. Waiter was a bit on the odd side. He seemed very uncomfortable explaining things to us. When we asked what was good on the menu, he essentially rattled off 50% of the menu as his "favorites". OK....that wasn't really very helpful. We all ordered drinks and water. The margaritas came out with glasses packed with ice...the water glasses came with three ice cubes at best. And every refill of water had NO ice cubes! I ordered the pork carnitas...they were dry and really not flavorful. Others said their meals were good. Next time I'll try a different restaurant instead.

The calamari as an appetizer was good but on 7 or 8 pieces. The carnitas was overcooked making it a little dry.

Excellent and unique Mexican cuisine with something for everyone. Interesting twists on typical dishes. Well mixed margaritas and a wide selection of tequilas for even the most particular palate. Attentive and friendly servers round out a delightful dining experience!

Do not ask for hot sauce...unless you want to pay extra for their salsa. If you like sweet then their flan would be the choice for dessert. Otherwise, too sweet.

Good food but wow it has gotten so expensive. $43 for an iced tea, fajitas and guacamole. A bit too much for mexican food in my opinion.

I've been going here for years. My favorite dish is the Chicken Zarape. That being said, I do feel the quality has declined the last couple of years. The creamy white rice that comes with it used to be absolutely divine. It was so soft and creamy it was like eating some secret food of the Gods that mere mortals weren't supposed to have. And to think it was just rice. Over the past few years, my family has never encountered the consistency of the rice that La Sandia used to serve. It's more coarse now and definitely not the same. It's still decent, but it's not something that makes us want to go back every week like it used to be. The chicken itself is still decent, although the flavors don't quite pop as much any more.

The other dishes are decent and I would venture to say if you eat here, you'll be pleased with the flavor profiles of the dishes. However, I have heard much griping from friends about the value of the guacamole. It's quite expensive for what you actually get. They make it in front of you, but it's really not that entertaining to watch them make it and I'd rather they cut a few bucks off the cost and make it in the kitchen so I don't have to sit awkwardly while my conversation is interrupted by the waiter trying to make conversation while he makes the guacamole for me. I've made better tasting guacamole at home for much less than I pay here.
The margaritas are a little expensive too, however I guess that goes with the area around here.

My husband and I were excited to come to one of our favorite Mexican places as a Cinco de Mayo date night before our baby arrives next month. The live band was great unfortunately they definitely should not have placed them in the restaurant! It was deafening and we weren't even sitting very close! If you tried to go to the bar, it was actually painful! The service was a little slow and lacking as well. We were a bit disappointed this time around.

While La Sandia is usually a favorite of mine for pre-movie dinner and drinks, on Cinco de Mayo you want to be anywhere but here. The small space crammed a 5 piece mariachi band in that played eardrum-rupturing music, making it impossible to communicate with anything but hand signals. To add insult to head pounding injury, the margaritas were all sour mix. As regulars, we felt taken advantage of with the low quality margs which we know to be reliably good. And as patrons looking to have some festive Mexican food, we felt like the loud music was a ploy to keep people from lingering. So we did leave, after asking the waitress to speak with the manager about the noise, and after waiting half an hour for bad drinks. We went to the neighboring Gorson Biersch where the drinks, food, service, and noise level were so enjoyable, we have a new favorite spot.

Went for Cinco De Mayo and it was extremely busy as expexted, food, service and band were good. The only bad thing was the volume of the band playing, they did not need speakers in such a small area, they were so loud you could not have a conversation amongst the table. So we quickly ate and left would have loved to spend more time.

Since we were there on Cinco de Mayo there was a live band playing. The music was entirely too loud. We could not hear each other and were having to practically yell in order to hear each other.
I appreciate the thought of having the live music for the occasion but it made the dinner an unpleasant experience because we could not hear each other.

The food could not have been more delicious. Loved their salsa (especially), fresh guac made at our table, fajitas, and margaritas! Server, Ricardo, was EXCELLENT! When we walked away from the table to take my daughter to the bathroom the bus boy accidentally cleared the table. They replaced everything they took and more. They were very apologetic and the manager even came over to apologize. They went above and beyond and we're incredibly accommodating. My daughter wanted mild guac while I would prefer spice. As a result, Ricardo brought over a small cup of jalapeños on the side. He was friendly, helpful, super kind. The worst part is the restaurant is 5hrs away from where we live. We just may have to take another trip to D.C. to go again.
