About La Provence - New Orleans

Country French inspired restaurant. At La Provence, “cooking with heart” means everything. The menu blithely ignores the cutting edge of urban contemporary French food, and instead reflects the time-honored, time-consuming rustic techniques that in turn reflect the rugged earthiness of the ingredients.

Quaint, but upscale Country French restaurant set back among the trees near the lake in Mandeville. It is much larger than it looks from the outside and defintely looks like restaruant you would see in the countryside of France. The service is superior and the food is farm to table fresh and excellent. Many of the dishes are simple but over the top with flavor. The pasta is homemade as is the pate' and most of the vegetables and spices seems to be farm to table. The oysters are simply prepared but the flavor is far from simple! The cocktail list is well done and the wine list is extensive for the menu. The butter lettuce salad was over the top with unexpected flavor. We found the atmosphere to be perfect for a relaxed slow date night dinner. It is romantic and cozy as well. The bar is large, yet cozy and welcoming. All in all it is a hidden gem and well worth the drive across the lake for a different kind of experience and a great meal.

Since Chef Eric and Jennifer Hunter have taken ownership of La Provence, they've taken it to a level the Northshore hasn't seen in over a decade. Farm to table ingredients mixed with the creative manipulation of the food into a feast, along with ambience and friendliness of the staff make for an amazing experience. You can also stroll the farm and see the animals, plants, vegetables, and honeybees and see where your food is sourced from. Do yourself a favor and go here...often.

I think the only jarring note was the music -- sounded like New York jazz, and was kind of intrusive -- other than that, the experience was perfect.

Four of us ate at La Provence on Saturday 9/29/17 with reservations for 7:30 pm. Everything was lovely from the ambiance to the service to the cuisine. The complimentary pate is always perfect and very addicting! We started with the beet salad which was innovative and delicious. Our entree was the lamb shank. It was tender and perfectly prepared. Along with a round of cocktails to start and then a bottle of french malbec wine we also ended the meal with the french press coffee. Although John Bech no longer owns this restaurant the quality of the food and the service has remained. I highly recommend this restaurant.

This was our first visit to the restaurant since John Besh sold it several months ago. We have gone to La Provence regularly over the last 30 years! Needless to say, we have a lot of important memories tied up in the restaurant. We were very anxious when we heard that there was a new owner. We waited a couple of months to let them get the kinks out before we tried it.
Fortunately, we were very pleased with the dining experience. The restaurant of course retains its country French charm. Several of the waitstaff are unchanged, including our excellent server last evening. The menu expands on the previous menu, leaving some of the standards in place such as Chef Chris's gumbo, but adding some very nice new creations. A beautiful ceviche was featured on the appetizer menu and some very appealing new entrées were added, including a delicious striped bass that we enjoyed.
Chef Eric visited with us at the table and took his time explaining his cooking heritage and what his plans are for this great restaurant. We were amply convinced of his genuine concern for keeping this gem on its A game.
We look forward to another 30 years of family outings at La Provence!

We had a lovely meal with longtime friends who were visiting from Texas. They had wanted to eat at a "New Orleans style" classic restaurant and we said, "You don't have to drive to the city for that!"

We have been to La Provence several times in the past and were eager to try it out since the new owners took over. The food was as wonderful as it has ever been and the service was excellent! This is probably our favorite restaurant in New Orleans and we were so happy to see the commitment and passion the new owners have for the food, the farm and the local area. We can't wait to go back!

My wife and I visit La Provence once every few months and always enjoy this special place that serves fine food and drink. The servers are warm and professional. The ambiance and decor are very inviting. This will continue to be one of our favorite, maybe THE favorite, places for a refreshing evening out for us.

A very pleasant, quiet meal. We ordered the charcuterie board, pork belly appetizer, and the Malbec. Everything was delicious, and we enjoyed every bite. We sat at a window by the bar, and the bartender was attentive. I've enjoyed eating here for over 20 years, and I'm happy to say I'm never disappointed. The pate alone is worth coming back for. Consistently wonderful food, drinks, service, and experience.

La Provence has been in business for 30 years and has had several owners/chefs. This was only my third time there and it had been at least 20 years since my last visit but it did not disappoint. The food and service were fantastic. Nine of us celebrated a friend's retirement and this was her request. We drove in from Baton Rouge and it was definitely worth the drive. I will try not to wait another 20 years before the next visit.

We have eaten here for years , since the original Chef Chris had it. John Besh had many iterations of it but only the last was successful in my opinion.
That said the new owners are on the right track. The food quality is amazing. The menus is a bit on the plebeian side. It seems that to be safe all the New Orleans area restaurants have gotten the memo that all menus should have the same preparations and proteins. That said, these were done with an energy that is fresh and clear! Go try it with these new folks, you will have a great meal in a beautiful setting.

Still wonderful! The ambiance and service are equally matched to the cuisine - all fantastic.

Food: a perfect blend of French and "Southern comfort". Solid menu with something for everyone. All prepared very well.

Ambiance: beautiful, French-country setting...yet space between tables and quiet (not smashed-in). Low light, nice space.

Service: professional and courteous and friendly and knowledgeable and approachable... couldn't have been better.

I'm from Austin and can't wait to return on my next visit.

I have been a moderately regular diner at La Provence in the past and was always delightfully satisfied with the food, service and ambiance. On this occasion, with the new owners, I was slightly disappointed in my choice of food, Shrimp and Grits, at a recent Sunday brunch. Although this is strictly a personal criticism, I found the grits to be too soft and the shrimp a bit tough and flavorless. I will continue to patronize La Provence and certainly try other choices on your menu.

Not a five star restaurant. In particular the service was not impressive, it was ok but nowhere near a five star serving staff. The food was very good but the whole fish, head on, was not prepared at our table - we had to debone it ourselves. Luckily, my fiance' was from the very southern part of Louisiana and knew how to pull the skeleton away from the fish without making a mess of it. Just looking around at the servers gave me the impression they had no five star resume or training. I wish I had gone when it was a John Besh restaurant.

This restaurant has it all. Ambience, great food, impeccable service and the owners are about as nice and genuine as you can get. Chef Eric is one of the most creative chefs the northshore has seen in a long time and his kitchen is running better than the kitchen at La Provence has run in years...quality food, creative designs, fresh farm to table offerings, outstanding drinks and wine to accompany each course. The small plates are wonderful for sharing, the appetizers are big enough to share, as well. Entrees are outstanding and it was hard to choose what to get because everything looked so amazing. Luckily, we had a table that loved sharing so we were able to sample
Just about everything we could've wanted. The hospitality couldn't be beat. No rushing you in and out to turn a table, this was a dining experience, not just dinner. Our group booked again for another ladies night out just one day after our experience. No one could quit talking about it! Looking forward to many, many more memories made here with chef Eric and Jenn!

Love the look and feel of this quaint restaurant. Talk about fresh from the farm, the farm is out back! Creative, delicious menu. Very fresh. Perfectly seasoned. Warm, efficient service. Good wine list. Don't skip a course. The appetizers and small plates are divine, ample entrees, but save room for dessert. Oh my, the desserts. We tried the pork chops, steak and fish for entrees. Each was perfect. You won't be disappointed with anything on the menu.

Absolutely outstanding food, service and ambience. Since the new owners have taken it over, it's like a new restaurant all the way around. Fresh and innovative, farm to table selections, housemade charcuterie that is both creative and refreshing, and amazing drink selections. They allow you to enjoy your meal and not rush you through the evening so they can turn a table. Well worth the drive and you're able to stroll the grounds to see what they cultivate and grow right there. I can't wait to go back. I've already been twice in three weeks.

La Provence has a long and distinguished history. My wife and I celebrated our engagement there almost forty years ago, and we have enjoyed many wonderful meals there. After Chef Chris died, and Besh took over many loyal friends celebrated. In truth, though, the restaurant had subsequent ups and downs. When we heard Erik and Jennifer Hunter had purchased La Provence from Besh, my wife and I were eager to try it last weekend. We were delighted. The food was impeccable, the service equally so. We will hurry back. You should as well. A renaissance is underway. AGB

La Provence is a hidden jewel, which is often forgotten, but well worth the drive. The food is wonderful along with the everything else.
La Provence offers a much better dining experience then the traditional New Orleans restaurants and crime and parking are not an issue.
Given the recent decisions by the Mayor of New Orleans, I intend to spend as little money as possible in New Orleans, in the future and plan on making La Provence a regular dining place. Mitch will soon feel the impact of his actions as more people from the North-shore do likewise.

La Provence was very accommodating of our 6 adult & 2 child party. The 3-course brunch menu was a big hit with our guests from out of town. The children loved seeing the pigs and chickens in the back of the restaurant. The staff was friendly and the food was delicious. We'll definitely be back!
