About La Petite Grocery

We welcome you in joining us for Lunch, Dinner & Sunday Brunch. Come dine in this beautifully restored Uptown restaurant on Magazine Street and enjoy James Beard Award Winning Chef Justin Devillier's contemporary Louisiana Cuisine.

The La Petite Grocery name pays homage to the history of its home, a building that’s been standing for more than a century. The original structure was built in the late 1800s and called the Central Tea, Coffee and Butter Depot. In 1908, a fire devastated the space and it was transformed into a full service grocery store. Later it was most notably a fine foods and butcher shop, VonderHaar’s Fine Foods until 1982. When La Petite Grocery opened in March of 2004, they similarly aspired to provide the neighborhood with exotic teas, locally roasted coffee, and fresh produce. By doing this, we hope to provide a dining experience that evokes nostalgia of old New Orleans.

Much better service than what is expected in New Orleans. Lamb shank was excellent but the ravioli was sub par.

The staff here was magnificent and let us dine at such an enjoyable and leisurely pace. I could not have thought of a better way to kick off the weekend then with lunch at La Petite Grocery!

Sheepshead was fried - too much batter. Couldn’t taste what it was resting on because there was too much sauce that overpowered it. My friends enjoyed their burgers. I was shocked that the waitress removed 2 dinner plates while the 3rd guest was still eating. That a big no-no

Really enjoyed our dinner here. The two of us wanted to try the entire list of appetizers so we had to compromise a bit. We loved everything. The pace was nice and a lot of folks brought different parts of our meal. I would return for sure.

We dined at La Petit Grocery for lunch in November. The cocktails wee excellent, the crab fritters and seafood stew we're wonderful. We enjoyed wine and after lunch liquor and coffee. Very attractive spot.

Our reservation was for 8:15 on a Sunday at the end of Thanksgiving weekend. I suspect that we were the last seating of the night and even though our waitress said "no rush" a few times, I suspect that the restaurant was in a rush to close. Understandable.

So the food was good, the ambiance was good, the service was even very good, the meal just didn't have that extra something that would enable me to give it excellent marks across the board. Our appetizers were spectacular - blue crab beignets, ricotta dumplings and beef short ribs. Really inventive and flavorful. My entrée - roasted pork chop was beautifully presented on the plate with fingerling potatoes and sauerkraut but was overall too sour with the sauce for a meaty dish like this - not well balanced, imho. And the pork could have been more tender (like the one we had at another Uptown restaurant a couple of nights earlier that was brined for 12 hours.) The Turtle Bolognese had a distinctive flavor from ordinary beef and the pasta was homemade. Well done.

The cocktails were also quite good and decent pours.

I recommend Le Petite Grocery because I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was late on Sunday. Good for date night.

We were very much looking forward to this meal... the food was less than mediocre and the service worse than that. We came in from NY that evening very excited and couldn't be more disappointed with the bland undercooked food and disinterested staff. I would say go anywhere else; Pêche or Coquette down the block far superior.

Le Petite Grocery has always been tops on my list. The food and wine list are fantastic and the desserts are some of the best in the city. I recommend the shrimp and grits as a lunch entrée, but everything is good. Will return again and again.

Have been here a number of times. Has been outstanding. Tonight a totally different experience. Poor service, cold mediocre food, and the evening was a disappointment. The coffee was like dishwater and the waitress didn't even apologize when we had to send back the first cups because they were completely cold.

I felt bad for the servers. It seemed like there were people missing from the floor. Our server was very nice, completely professional, and none of it was her fault — she had too many tables to manage. For this restaurant’s reputation and profile, it should have been a more seamless experience. Lag times for first drink orders, and then I think our food sat. On the food, we had a shrimp shell in the shrimp and grits and a big salt hit at the end. It’s truly a beautiful place, has gotten national acclaim, and maybe we just got there on a bad night. I don’t think this should dissuade anyone from going to LPG — but if management reads this, please make sure your servers are supported and appreciated!

Lovely place. We are cooks and really enjoy exceptional food. La Petite Grocery is exceptional. Unusual and delicious cocktails, of course, the blue crab beignets were amazing, as was the turtle bolognese. Wished we could have gotten in for a second meal while in New Orleans.

Cute restaurant with good service. The crab beignets (which is why we went there) were doughy and fair. The short ribs, however, were outstanding. The pickled veggies were also very tasty.

If you haven't tried it for Su Fay brunch, your life is NOT complete! You must have the Red Hammer Bloody Mary, it is a meal on its own and pair it with the blue crab beignets. It is amazing! The service is attentive and they will not lead you wrong. Plus everything for brunch had an egg on it!!!!! Pure heaven on a Sunday morning!!

Food was missing so much this day. Fries over salted. Lamb had no seasoning. Scallops were decent but definitely light service size with only two (should at least have 3-4). Shrimp and grits were decent but not the best. Scallops were the best out of the items. Fresh black pepper on items would be welcome addition. I’m not one to send food back or complain. This is one of the over rated restaurants in NOLA and I have been to many. Can’t recommend this place at all. Service was decent but not stellar and it was just a lack luster experience. My wife and I will never be back to this establishment as it pales to so many other NOLA establishments. Save your money and go elsewhere.

I've eaten here before in years past and really enjoyed fabulous food but something awful has happened. I reserved a table for three foodie friends on our annual trip to NOLA. One friend tried to dissuade me when he learned of my choice telling me that he did not enjoy a meal here 6 months earlier. I prevailed. We arrived and were seated at a table with a really cold draft blowing down on us. First request to adjust the temperature resulted in a reply, "The air conditioning is not on." Perhaps ten minutes later the manager came by and allowed that he had adjusted the temperature and it would be warming up. It did. Our waiter was knowledgeable about food and wines and was helpful in placing our orders.

However, the food for whatever the reason arrived downright cold. Tomato bisque, hangar steak and lamb shank all arrived at far below presentation temperature though the presentations looked quite attractive. Requested items were taken back to the kitchen for reheating. We had to ask for a salt shaker and it took some minutes for the shaker to arrive. It should have taken seconds.

Our meal was very, very disappointing and I doubt that I'll return. There are too many opportunities for fine dining in the New Orleans area to chance this happening again.

I've eaten here a number of times, so was familiar with it. But it was my daughter's birthday. I told her I'd take her to dinner anywhere, and she chose La Petite Grocery. The waitress was friendly, attentive, and unobtrusive, the food was delicious, the vibe was mellow and warm, and it was quiet enough that we could have a good conversation, which we enjoy. Everything was perfect. They even brought my daughter a little birthday pastry with a candle, unbidden.

This is one of our favorites. The brunch menu is tried and true, maybe could use an update, but their board of specialsmis outstanding. All ingredients are fresh and I never feel I'm eating last night's leftovers. Portions are perfect, maybe a little bigger than gourmet standards allow.

WE sit at the bar usually when we can, the service is immediate and I enjoy watching the drinks being made.

I'd like to see more wines by the glass. The have a deep wine selection for bottles, but by the glass isn't so wide.

We took the advice of many other reviewers and tried the crab begnets. They were awesome paired with a French Chablis. Also had the fried green tomatoes special-great. Also had the shrimp & grits. That too was yummy. Service was perfect. The sommelier was knowledgeable and friendly. All in all a delightful evening.

Group of girlfriends celebrating a birthday. We had a fabulous meal and our server was wonderful in taking time to explain some dishes and help us choose---so many great options, it is hard to decide. A few of our favorites were the LPG burger, brussel sprouts, crab beignets, shellfish stew, and scallops. We liked that you could order a variety of the apps and sides and have a very filling meal. The Chocolate Ooey Gooey Cake was a hit, the creme brulee was ok. It was a bit loud and harder to have a conversation, but we were at a larger table and spread out. I think if you are at a table for 2 or 4, the noise isn't an issue. Will certainly go back as this is in my neighborhood.

This adorable general store turned restaurant with bright yellow and red tin and plaster details serves up pleasant ambiance for a good, Southern meal. Our hopes were high given the reviews and the lovely menu, yet sadly we were let down, as our food was extraordinarily salty. For the quality, we found the price a bit high. However, the cocktails were divine and the presentation of the food nice.
