La Palapa Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We were seated without being given menus and waited forever before anyone came by. After asking for menus we waited again for what seemed like an eternity before they came. Once our order was (finally) taken things went fairly well but there was nothing special about the service nor the food. Given this restaurant is in a tourist zone one should not be surprised that it was overpriced. But it was overpriced. There are far better restaurants with much cheaper prices all over Puerto Vallarta.
We had a wonderful time at La Palapa! We were promptly seated on the beach and had a great view of the sunset. Our waiter, Carlos, convinced us to try the special passion fruit drinks with mezcal and it didn’t disappoint. For appetizers we ate: shrimp & lobster taquitios and grilled octopus. Everything was superb and bursting with flavor. The octopus practically melts in your mouth. For dinner we had tuna and the slow cooked salmon and it was very delicious. Topped the night off with a flaming sexy coffee made table side and it was beyond cool and mesmerizing.
We selected La Palapa for dinner with friends from Portland, OR who wanted to experience the best of PV. Our research online paid off...La Palapa is everything the good reviews said and more! We were seated on the beach, as requested, just before a gorgeous sunset. We shared the sauteed shrimp appetizer while enjoying cocktails...I loved my Mango Passionfruit Margarita. We took our time and weren't rushed to order. When we did order, we all loved our food! I can recommend the Tortilla Soup, Scallops, Green Salad with Champagne Vinegarette and the Red Snapper. Near the end of our meal, we noticed a large female sea turtle making her way up to the restaurant. Staff were scrambling to move chairs, tables and people out of her way! The turtles are protected in Mexico and this one was about to lay her eggs. She found a spot, dug in and started laying eggs with a crowd looking on. A Preservation Officer came and made sure the turtle was not touched. He then took the eggs to a safe place, as Momma turtle went back to the sea. What a special and spectacular experience! Be prepared to be approached by vendors while dining...cigars, photographs, Mariachi band, etc. We are all looking forward to our next visit!
Reason for 3-star rating was waiters suggestion when he brought the check that he "would you like me to add 20% for service"...service was OK but not 20% OK!!! It's OK for staff to point out "propina" not included but to suggest a number is a little too much and I found it offensive and rude!!!
We visit Puerto Vallarta a couple of times a year. It is our tradition to have our first dinner with our toes in the sand dining at La Palapa. Such a beautiful setting. Staff is very professional and friendly. Food is well above average consistently. The "special" house cocktail is almost always a disappointment - a fair warning. Just order what you normally like. They are known for the tortilla soup, the shrimp and lobster taquito starters are so good. We always go with a seafood entree choice. Fresh and delicious. Absolutely recommend if you've not been.
Great table on the beach. My only issue was the drunk at the next table and his vulgar mouth. He was with a large party and was totally blasted. We had a great dinner. Loved the snapper and all 3 of our appetizers. Cocktails and wine were all great. Service was also top notch.
Amazing flavors. Had the lobster special and very pleased. Also had the pork pot stickers and lobster and shrimp tacquitos (sp?) . Others enjoyed the short ribs and steak. Chocolate flourless cake was the perfect ending to a wonderful evening. Lovely lovely lovely.
I love to dine at La Palapa every time I come to the Puerto Vallarta area. The food is always outstanding. The cocktails are inventive and delicious. Tonight I had a margarita made with hibiscus and it was wonderful. It’s so fun to sit on the beach and watch the sunset. It is a beautiful restaurant. Highly recommend it.
This is the place you spend a few hours when you’re looking for that special experience with beyond incredible cuisine. From the first moment walking in and being awe-struck by the environment to the last moment finishing my carmel corn cake, I kept thinking it might have been a Top 5 best meals of my life. Enjoyed the tortilla soup, pork potstickers, grilled octopus, and tuna appetizers and the red snapper catch of the day, seafood risotto, short ribs and salmon meals. Would recommended each and every thing we ordered. Go here!
Horrible service - seemed to be more interested in turning tables than interacting with the guests and understanding their needs. Went there for a special occasion, but special requests were ignored and staff did not seem interested in attempting to make it special. Food was VERY hit and miss, but best (coconut shrimp and stuffed pork loin) was good and worst was poor (corn rissotto) with overcooked fish and rice to where the dish was barely edible. SHAMEFUL service and food for the prices of the dishes (3-5x the cost of most other restaurants in PV). Did not stay for dessert as the experience was horrible up to that point. The ONLY good was the location on the beach with a gorgeous sunset. Will not recommend, nor return.
Made reservation online. Restaurant had no idea how to check for my reservation. So my special requests were not carried out. I told the staff that my wife has an allergy. They ignored it and we had to leave due to the result of this allergy. Wait staff didnt care, we paid any way and left. I would NOT return here. The somalier was great but everyone else was incompetent.
This was our 6th year coming to La Palapa. Food, service and view is consistently wonderful.
Unfortunately, they did not have our OpenTable reservation and the restaurant was considerably busy. Fortunately, they were still able to seat us. Recommend you confirm your reservation directly with the restaurant before arriving.
La Palapa, year after year, remains in the very top tier of PV creative presentation. Its setting, along the beach (some tables are even on the beach) is the best in the city. Service consistently is top-notch, with servers all speaking good English. Though La Palapa always has been amongst the town's priciest eateries, the now very strong dollar considerably reduces the tariff.
La Palapa is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with different superb menus for each. Every year, when we visit PV, we make La Palapa our first stop.
