La Nacional Restaurant, officially the cantina of the Spanish Benevolent Society, was created to be inclusive and to appeal to the wide array of people who call La Nacional their second home. This classic haunt has been feeding Spaniards and Latin Americans in New York since the 19th century from a historical brownstone in the heart of what was Little Spain. Now, with the building having undergone a facelift and the non-profit reaching out to a new generation of members, it was time for the restaurant to follow suit.

With our expansive catering service, full bar, and premier staff, we can accommodate a wide range of unique events. The room can hold over 100 people and is equipped with audiovisual technology, including a large screen and a new sound and lighting systems. The menu is full of so many enticing options it was hard to decide! I had the Arroces Secreto; it took longer to prepare than the other, simpler dishes my companions ordered, and it was well worth the wait. It was superb—I recommend it highly. My friend ordered empanadas and said that now she can never go back to her (formerly) favorite empanada place! Her daughter wasn’t hungry so she just got the watermelon gazpacho; she nursed it throughout our dinner because she loved it so much! Our server was warm and friendly, the ambience was very nice, and we would go back in a heartbeat.

We had the arroz con scallops, which was delicious! The rice was not overly salty and was well seasoned and served with a generous portion of baby scallops. For dessert, we had flan which came with a scoop of ice cream and a raspberry sauce. The flan was lighter than we like, perhaps due to being made with fewer eggs or less condensed milk, but it was good, nonetheless. The red sangria was very good. Our waitress, Luz, was a treasure! Very attentive, polite, and extremely friendly--un placer! We've eaten at La Nacional many times before and have never been disappointed! Carol, Manhattan

Disrespectful service, ruined our night Both my friend and I arrived separately — and both times, the waitresses saw us and completely ignored us. No greeting, no eye contact. Just blank stares. Drinks took forever, food order “disappeared” due to a “system issue”, and we had to reorder. No apology. Not even a hint of basic courtesy. The garlic bread came so late we had already asked for the check out of frustration — they packed it to go without asking. It was salty, flavorless, and not worth the wait. Our server nearly dropped a plate on the table and just laughed. No professionalism. No respect. Never coming back.

I’ve been here many times without an issue but this time I checked into my reservation a little early (my fault) and so my party and I were seated upstairs which is no issue at all. The issue is the service given that we felt that other patrons were prioritized over us. The waiter came and took our order swiftly and we waited for about 30 mins for our appretizer (Gambas al ajillo) but when pulling our waiter about it, he noted it wasn’t even entered into the system as an order and said it would take 5 mins for them to come. Fast forward 15 mins passed and our paellas arrived well and good and towards the middle of eating, the appetizer came quite late. The issue here is that we didn’t feel quite like our table had the level or service and attention it needed. When seated in the ground level floor service is much better and I get tended by the lovely lady whom I look forward to having us every time we visit. Things are much better there than above. Next time I will just prefer to be seated below so they don’t forget us or have food come in very late or missed.

The chef, who is from Valencia, makes wonderful Valencia-inflected rice dishes, along with the usual Spanish classics. It’s always delicious! The neighborhood ambience is some of the best in the city, as is only befitting at La Nacional, which is actually a 100-year old Spanish social club. Everyone is friendly and upbeat. I’ve been dining at La Nacional for years and it only gets better. Upstairs, if you arrive on the right night, there may be a spirited flamenco show. Ole!

We loved the croquettes, both the ham and the mushroom, alrhough the mushroom had more flavor. The gambas al ajillo were good, but not extraordinary. The tortilla was tasteless and reheated. We also ordered the artoz con scallops. That was the best dish of the night.
