La Mesa Modern Mexican
Great Mexican food and cucumber margaritas. My favorite Mexican restaurant in the Fox Valley.
Excellent salsas, margaritas and tacos! Also enjoyed the elote and rice!
This is one of the best places to eat outside in the Fox Valley. Too bad winter is closing in. I can only hope that the city fathers allow the restaurants to continue this expansion in the years to come
Food was wonderful. Service was great. We will be back.
Food is always excellent here and atmosphere and ambiance is fantastic. Only issue we had on this visit was the long wait for food. Not certain why, it was not too busy at 3:00pm on Sunday but it seems our server was also the bartender and had to do two jobs and was not as attentive. To be fair, we did have two kids under 3 in our party of 7 so our window to eat was less than usual. We have had catering from Le Mesa as well and they do a fantastic job.
Food and drinks, and service were terrific!
The service was superb. Our waitress could not have been better. The bean dip, chips and guacamole are excellent. Our meals were inconsistent . The chicken on the Hombre was dry and chorizos grease ran off the tacos. The ground beef tacos were flavorless and went mostly uneaten. The Barbacoa tacos were good and so were the fish tacos. My family would not desire to return to this restaurant and were overall disappointed in my choice.
La Mesa is one of our favorite spots....I love many of the Taco choices, seared tuna is probably my fav!
There are many Margarita choices, the Agave slim happens to be my fav!
The vibe is great, very friendly, educated servers, and coincidentally there was a tequila tasting the night I was there, and it was packed, looked like a lot of fun!
Service, food & drinks were awesome.
My husband and I went on a rare date night. We were excited to enjoy a nice dinner and catch up. We ended up sitting towards the back - which was great and less crowded at that moment.
The restaurant quickly filled up and people were seated at the tables on either side of us. The tables are placed so closely together that one can barely get out of the booth side of setup without bumping the next table.
The drink menu was not in order. (They had a menu change coming up the next week) I heard so many tables being told that the wine or beer they had requested was not available, myself included. We ordered drinks. My husbands beer took about 10 minutes to arrive. (It was so cold it had slushified and He had to place it near the table candle to melt)
I was still waiting for the waitress to check to see if the wine I ordered was available. It wasn’t. (Why wouldn’t the wait staff be made aware of what the bar had available? They should have been fully informed, eliminating the need to run back and forth between their guest and the bar, increasing customer satisfaction and staff efficiency.).
I ordered a different drink which came out after our food had been delivered to the table. That drink, which was described one way on the menu did not arrive as described and was disappointing.
The noise levels between the music they played and being so closely packed in was too much for me. I could barely hear my husband speak :(
The only great thing about this restaurant was the food. We ordered traditional guacamole and it was delicious. Hubs ordered tinga tacos. I ordered the tuna poke and posole. The flavor combos were fantastic.
Other food items in the menu were equally intriguing.
Would I try this restaurant again? Not likely.
Lack of attention to details
delicious food! great service! awesome atmosphere!
Loved everything about this place! Was there for a business lunch and will be going back for dinner and drinks soon!
The food was well presented and had good taste, but lacked flavor. Everything was very bland and mild. No kick for authentic Mexican food.
My party decided upon La Mesa Modern Mexican after receiving recommendations from friends. We were able to secure reservations on a Saturday night just a few hours before but the restaurant was busy. The atmosphere was very nice with table seating beside large windows and nice, dark ambiance throughout. The food was fantastic! They have several guacamole options - we went with one serving of the Masa (corn and serrano peppers with the guacamole) and one of the Pina (grilled pineapple and pumpkin seeds) and enjoyed both. The Mango Habanero margarita was very good, but the Blueberry Lavander margarita was a little strong on alcohol and syrup. Otherwise the portion size, temperature, and taste of the entrees was very good. We will definitely be back!
The drinks, appetizers and tacos were good. The sides we got were not good at all. The Elote was very watery and tasted like frozen corn. We also got the Brussels sprouts, and they were inedible. They had SO much sauce and it was SO spicy it was ridiculous. The drinks were pretty good, pretty standard. The chips were pretty good, but you have to order everything to go with them, that's where they get you. They give you a little 3 oz portion of refried beans, which are pretty good, but that's it. You have to order salsa or anything else to go with them. It was pretty loud, but that doesn't bother me very much.
Loved it, great food at a good price on tuesday!
Taco meat was too salty. Mexican stew pork was VERY fatty. Salsa, chips and guacamole were delicious.
Waitress seemed poorly trained as I ordered a “cup” of soup and she said there was only one size, but she would adjust the price. There was a cup size on menu. I did not have a spoon and I finally had to get up and go to the kitchen to get a spoon. No empty dishes were cleared from our table.
Maybe next time will go for drinks and appetizer only!
Very loud and difficult to converse due to their lack of sound dampening decor.
We were there on a Sunday afternoon. Service and food should be the same no matter the day or time. Food was just ok, my traditional margarita was very good. When we asked the server about menu items she had no clue. Weill give it another try.. holefully this was indicative of the restaurant.
The atmosphere was very nice although a bit loud. The food was very tasty and had some unique items on the menu. The drinks were really good and nice variety. The service was outstanding. I would definitely return.
Great food and appetizers. Loved the adult beverages as well.
Variety of food that satisfied everyone's palate. Our new family favorite!
This was my second visit to La Mesa. Food and drinks were on point but our server got multiple orders incorrect. Will give it another try but I was disappointed.
Great food and service. We were a party of 6 everyone enjoyed the food!
Taco Tuesday was excellent , our party of five enjoy our meals ! Service was a little slow but it was busy ....
I was so pleasantly surprised by La Mesa. The food and drinks were spectacular and the service was awesome. The environment was cozy and our bill was reasonable. What more could you want on Taco Tuesday / date night?
We arrived around 3:45pm and were greeted by 2 employees at the door. Quickly we had a server approach us for a drink order and dinner order soon after. Went to the bathroom and they looked as if they were Uncleaned from the previous night. The waitress went missing at that point. People started coming in and it seemed the employees were running around trying to accommodate everyone. The bartender was serving tables, others dressed with normal clothing were also helping out. You couldn’t tell who was who. The food came out and was not appetizing at all. The waitress was spending her time at another table. I finally asked for the check and then a man Agee cane over asking if it was somebody’s birthday and if we wanted cake. We couldn’t stay any longer so we took it hone. She didn’t apologize for the poor service. We finally saw the waitress when we were leaving and she apologized for not being able to attend to us as her bigger table needed her attention. Will not be going back.
Came here for the first time since it became known as La Mesa. Service was spot on, not overwhelming but attentive. They brought out complimentary chips and bean dip. Chips are the thick ones and on the greasy side, bean dip was pretty good.
We ordered the bacon guacamole, sounded different which it was. Nice flavor and who doesn't like bacon! :)
For dinner I ordered the Pescado tacos wrapped in lettuce. They weren't bad but didn't wow me. The Mahi Mahi was a bit on the dry side and the tacos could have benefited from more of the aioli sauce. My wife had the Barbaoca which were very good, juicy liberal amounts of beef brisket. We split our dinners, 2 tacos each. For a side we had the Elote which was good, but again could have benefited from more sauce, Mayonesa.
You won't go hungry as you get 4 tacos per order.
Will we return, no time soon as Del Barrio (in Geneva) and Puebla are better.
We were pleasantly surprised for our 1st time dinning
I was excited to read other reviews that the menu was similar to or the same as Puebla... although the menu might be the same, the food was definitely not. We ordered a few favorites and were VERY disappointed. The chicken tinga was watery and very bland. The steak in the tacos were so greasy that it was dripping everywhere and it was incredibly salty. Even the bean dip was bland. Nothing was great or worth going back to order.
WOW! Love the new menu, can’t wait to come back! The servers that work here are happy and knowledgeable! I had the jalapeño cucumber margarita and it was perfect, my husband had the smoky Jalisco old fashioned, super! We shared the chicken tings tacos and the ahi tuna tacos, both were amazing!! I have to try the barbacoa next time and some of the unique guacs. You must try the churros OMG, filled with caramel or hazelnut and a bowl of fresh whipped cream TO DIE FOR! I’ll go back just for those mmmmm
Thank you so much for the Awesome review.
I’m very upset that I was marked no shoe to this restaurant. I made a reservation for 4 at 5pm on Tuesday and we showed up. The place was empty except for a few people seated at the bar. We had great service by our server and great food but I’m not happy being accused of not showing up by your hostess on open table when we certainly did, and spent money too. Since it seems our being at the restaurant wasn’t acknowledged or appreciated, I certainly won’t be back.
Tom was awesome, super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu! Definitely a place to check out, drinks and food were amazing as well!
Excellent food, service and price!
Celebrated a birthday. It was as a shame they were working on a construction project.
Great place. Food was excellent and service was great. The waitress was fantastic.
You have to try this place.
The food was amazing and our server was excellent. She made awesome suggestions. It was our first time there, but we will be back!
Steak tacos and potato/chorizo tacos were really good. Didn’t care for the the chicken with bacon ones as much. Elotes were very good and a nice size portion. Had the raspberry smoke margarita and it was excellent. Not too sweet.
Very poor service!
