A group of eight of us chose La Mesa for dinner, as it was conveniently located at The Palms and a new addition to the dining scene. Aware that the venue transforms into a music-driven experience after 9:30 PM, we secured a reservation two hours earlier, hoping for a relaxed evening centered on good conversation.
Overall, the food was average. The churrasco was somewhat gritty, and the grilled red snapper, while decent, didn’t stand out. The vaca frita, however, was enjoyable, and the moros and yuca were particularly well-prepared. Pricing was reasonable, aligning with expectations.
Service was adequate but lacked warmth and a genuinely welcoming touch. The most uncomfortable part of the experience came when settling the bill. As we divided the check among our group, I requested a copy after payment but never received one. It also appeared that a 20% gratuity had been added beforehand, yet the waitress made a point of emphasizing that any additional tip would go directly to her. The manner in which she handled the payment—keeping the card processor in hand and not allowing me to review the charges comfortably—felt unprofessional and pressuring.
Would I return? Maybe, but likely not as a first choice.
