Our friends were telling us about this place they snuck in to with great decor. They told us that they were asked to leave as they weren’t open and just feeding their employees breakfast. We told
Them that it was great they like it because we had reservations later! After the Hornblower cruise we came in for a few drinks. We had dinner later which was amazing! I recommend anyone who love’s flavorful food to come here
This was some of the most delicious food we have ever had. The service and ambience were also great. Highly recommend it for a special occassion.
We love this inventive menu featuring small plates, fresh seafood, bold flavors. The location is ideal; just a block from the Ferry Building, on the water (try to get a table outdoors). We shared a sampler, 2 tapas and the fish of the day. I had my favorite cocktail, Pisco Sour. We topped it off with a scrumptious dessert, choco maracuya, with chocolate underneath a light passion fruit mouse.
Muy buena comida y experiencia
We stopped by La Mar for lunch on Sunday. We ordered our usual Pisco Sours and a plate of Nikkei tiradito to start--both were perfect. There was a special restaurant week menu so we decided to take advantage of the great prices on it. We ordered the Ceviche Classico and the Lomo Saltado. Both courses were delicious. My husband finished his meal with Tres Leches cake. I was too full to eat another bite.
Food wise La Mar is between 4 and 5 stars, but it did exceed my expectations, because I find most restaurants along the waterfront have better views, ambience or food presentation than how the food tastes. La Mar's kitchen staff got culinary chops; they are for real. The ceviche (I believe the fish was halibut) was very good, and the portion was quite generous. Taro chips were a nice, healthy choice. The beef tenderloin was perfectly cooked with a nice aroma. It came with a scoop of white rice and a heap of country fries - too carb-heavy for me. The restaurant was busy, but service was brisk yet attentive. The regular menu items were on the expensive side but the SF Restaurant Week prix fixed menu was good value.
Visited for restaurant week. The food was amazing but portions were small. Quality of the seafood is exceptional.
Great social atmosphere. Arrived as their latest reservation so the service to start was a little off, but as the night progressed the service improved greatly. The food was phenomenal. The lomo was to die for. Will be back!
Food, service and ambiance were terrific. Prices can be steep but the quality of the ingredients and the service make up for it. With the restaurant week menu, it is almost mandatory to head to La Mar.
Amazing and delicious food. Really enjoy the experience.
Nice experience and good food and service. Would recommend.
My second time dining here. The first time we went as a couple and I loved it so much wanted to go back on my own for a nice dinner by myself. Made a booking online, and from the four options they offer (bar, high top, indoor, outdoor) I reserved a high top, so I can sit at one of the tables in the bar area. The hostess looked at me and told the waitress "seat her at the bar" and before I could say anything they seated me at the bar. First red flag. The bar was quite empty at this time, with no bartender standing there, just employees coming and going as needed. The high tops are also empty except one so they could definitely have had me seated at one. Then I looked at the menus they gave me, only the wine menu with days specials, no regular menu. A while later a bartender came, I asked him for the menu and he helped. I ordered a couple things, waited a bit, then the food arrived. I don't have any cutlery or a plate at this point, and there isn't even a waitress assigned so I am looking around, then the bartender asked someone and they brought it... Overall I am very disappointed because I wanted to enjoy a nice dinner with myself, and this is the treatment I get. I invite all restaurants to be a bit more respectful to the people that are dining alone, which is an issue in overall US, never had this type of treatment in Europe when I ate alone.
Best food I have had in years
The food here is so interesting and the flavors are so amazing. Fun place to go to. Let the waiter guide you.
Perfect for groups and patio is amazing with the view of the bay. All of the food was delicious even the vegetarian options all so flavorful with perfect shareable sizing portions for our group of 6. Pisco sour is def must!
Food prices vary
Recommend the pasta and nigiri tasting, both delicious
The halibut belly special was special indeed! This place is truly great and a beautiful space.
La Mar is the place to eat. I will definitely revisit again.
Excellent everything! Would highly recommend for a special occasion. The patio is fabulous.
Amazing food selection and great service. Great for sharing food with big groups
Food and service were stellar.
We started off with a round of Pisco Sours, which to be honest were not the best I've had. Probably would try something else next time.
The seafood is where La Mar shines. Our group all had the tasting menu, consisting of 4 courses - I would recommend this option to get a taste of the best of La Mar.
Jasmine was very attentive. Amazing food. Viva el Perú🇵🇪❤️
the place is beautiful, close to the pier 33, we order the causa limeña, anticucho de pulpo and cebiche clasico, awesome food, the service was excellent very recommended.
Great food, service and ambiance!
The dishes are always imaginative, very tasty and well-represented.
Forgot the birthday extra from my reservation. Servers were getting antsy near the end of the night and passed by a lot to pick up one dish at a time. Very loud table outside, difficult to hear my guest who was seated across from me. Food was pretty good.
We had the perfect table- outside and in the far corner with two heaters to keep us comfortable. The food was excellent.
My third visit this year and the food continues to be interesting and excellent! Be prepared to spend $$$ per person, regardless of beverages of choice!
Great food and cocktails!
Perfect dinner experience for a birthday! Everything we ate was fantastic and the service was impeccable.
The food is fabulous here. The patio is comfortable and the service very good. The grilled octopus is outstanding but everything we ordered was wonderful.
A favorite before the pandemic and even more so now because of its huge and airy patio and well-ventilated interior. Also, maybe because everything tastes better now after being couped up for 20 months--the empanadas sampler and the ceviche sampler are even more delicious than before; empanadas delicious and crispy, fillings fill the entire shell, savory and yummy. Ceviches with a broad variety of flavors, great citrus notes, crispy roasted notes with fresh fish; we ended up ordering a second round lol.
Service was prompt, smiling, and precise.
What a delight.
The Octopus was a huge hit. Chicken empanadas insanely good.
The food was amazing as always but the service was really bad, the receptionist was rude, the waiter or I’m not sure who that was taking us is was rude and finally the waiter. Me and my boyfriend felt really uncomfortable and just didn’t make a scene because we wanted to enjoy the evening.
Great meal as always!
The building is beautiful and the location cannot be better. For a party of five, we ordered two samplers and two large dishes. The beef/rib was wonderful. Day catch halibut is a bit dry. We had a nice evening.
The food was wonderful, amazing g and delicious. But the service was truly abysmal…..the waiter literally Forgot about us and forgot to bri ng our last entree…..for 30 minutes…..and then argued with us when we informed him we were thinking g of leaving and not taking the last entree. The waiter never was around to ask if I wanted another beer and we had to ask the bus boy to go Find him twice. Truly great food. Truly awful service.
We received a text that our table was ready so we were seated before our reservation time. The place was empty because it was early. We asked to move to the water side but were told it was fully booked all night. I wondered around around to see mostly empty tables. We sat there for a good 20 minutes before anyone came over. Eventually, someone came with waters. Another 15 minutes before menus arrived. More waiting before orders were taken with language being a barrier when we asked questions about certain items. Expensive restaurant for that type of service. When leaving, the same tables were still empty on the water side.
We had reservations for 5pm. We checked in at 4:30pm and sat outside by deck ,where we saw your waiters eating. came back at 4:50pm and requested outside table. Hostess said it wouldnt be possible because they were booked solid. We were sat inside and within minutes another couple was seated right next to us when entire main room was empty and outside was not even 1/4 full. Needless to say, it was uncomfortable and ridiculous during covid for 2 couples (strangers)to be sat & breathing on each other without distance when entire place is more than half empty. When we left at 6pm space availability hadn't changed. This ruined our dinner and left bitter taste in our mouths. Grilled Calamari was not pleasing to palate either. Have been to this restaurant many times over the years, but Won't be returning and will spend our Saturday dinner money elsewhere where customers are accommodated. The hostess arbitrarily made a decision when we had reservations and weren't drop-ins is . First of all we were not spending hours to eat there if you were worried about availability or occupying time slot . Second, if seating is done based on waiters work then stick to your schedule but every once in a while think that diners that want space when it permits. The hostess made no effort other than a rude no, no discussion. I felt like the 2 minority women (in each couple)were sat next to each other, don't know why but was not pleased.
My husband commented he has no plans to return to your establishment due inconvenience and uncomfortable seating. One understands seating when place is to capacity but that was not your case when we left the restaurant.
Ceviche was good.
