The Cebiche Mecca of California! Not even a block away from the Ferry Building in the Embacadero in San Francisco. The noise level inside is muted by the pure bliss and party in your mouth after sampling the Cebiche. If you have more than two people they have specials that have humongous fresh fish cooked to share...and make your eyes roll back in your head. The service is a well oiled machine that makes you comfortable with the menu and can help make your meal completely memorable. After your toes stop curling in ecstasy, you could possibly ask about the dessert menu. I never got there. My wife truly enjoyed our time...especially because we were on our first night “away” from our kids. We did it for the “Halibut”! Get it??? Ahhhh, nevermind. Bravissimo le Mar! Best/First Peruvian meal I’ve had...won’t be the last.

Stay away! There are hundreds of better restaurants in San Francisc - Coqueta, for instance, which is only a few steps away from La Mar. Service was absolutely awful, some of the worst ever - starting with a bungling host who left us standing in the middle of the dining room, without seating us or giving us menus. Finally, when menus arrived, the server was not able to answer questions about ingredients. (We had two guests who have food allergies.) He clearly guessed at the answers rather than checking with the kitchen, and both dishes served to our allergic friends had the dreaded ingredients the server had sworn were not included. After taking our drink order, he disappeared for 15 minutes, returning with part of the order only (two beers). Finally, after another 15 minutes, I flagged someone down and asked them to find out what happened to my glass of white wine. (These were not complex cocktails we were after.) The disasters continued with two nearly inedible first courses followed by four ill-prepared entrees. Our waitperson disappeared for the rest of the evening, and I could not find him to make any further request. He reappeared at the end of the meal when nothing more could be done and to ask if we wanted dessert (not complimentary), which we declined in our eagerness to escape. Our friends and I are locals. We have long wanted to dine at La Mar, but never quite found the time or occasion. Now we never will again. Such a shame to have ruined a joyful reunion of old friends!

Went there on a Friday, made reservations for two at 7:15, bay bridge traffic was horrible, so we called to move the reservations to 7:30, they said no problem.
We got seated right away, had to ask for Corner table as they were seating us in the middle, had asked for a corner table while making the reservation. I think they should offer the best table available, not sure why they don’t. Ordered a bottle of Argentinian Chardonnay, the sommelier came by and said they were out, but offered us an amazing Chardonnay from Mendoza. We ordered the ceviche tasting menu and everything was just amazing. The food there is healthy and very creative. If you want to eat healthy but enjoy creative and tasty food, this is it!

Good food, great service from Mario. A menu worth exploring. Lively atmosphere. Good place to take out-of-town visitors. Easy to access from BART Embarcadero station - a 3 block walk. We will return.

Stick with the ceviches and raw fish offerings. The entrees are disappointing in comparison and stingy on the protein.

The only problem that we had was with Open Table, since we had made a reservation with points to be redeemed, and this did not work. Until now no reply from Open Table on that issue... very sad to realize that the App is good to make reservations, but that the club does not make your life easy when it comes to redeem your points and actually benefit from being a member!

We went to La Mar in Lima and we had a WONDERFUL experience so we decided to try La Mar in San Francisco.
The quality of the food is good , we had ceviche and a whole halibut, but prices are really high, I guess it is the bay area prices. The service was ok but nothing special.

We are one couple so likely are thoughts won’t count since this is a successful restaurant.

My wife had lived in Peru her entire life and visits Peru for a month every year, we know Peruvian food very well as well as Pisco drinks.

Besides being way overpriced (gotta pay the rent on the water) the food was not what we expected. We’ve had authentic Peruvian food from food trucks that was FAR better and have a much better portion.

The Pisco Sour was awful at best and nothing like the “real” thing.

The best part about our dinner was sitting on the patio and watching the homeless stroll by.

We were both very disappointed in the dinner and the $205 dollar bill that came along with it for what we’d have easily paid $50 for at a food truck that would have tasted 100% better.

Looking for a good Peruvian place.. find a hole in the wall Mom and Pop place and you won’t be disappointed.

The service here was lacking. I think because the restaurant is so popular, they feel as if they do not need to provide good service. When we first got there, the hostess was trying to fight us on our reservation time. I clearly had and showed her my confirmation that said 7:30 and she tried to convince me that she had 7:45 down. Then, when they actually seated us, it was crammed and there was no space to walk in between our table and the table parallel to us. To top it off! We brought a cake and they had the audacity to charge us a cake cutting fee without telling us first???????????? Will not be coming back here. It's all hype. Would rather go to a more down-to-earth spot.

We had the most amazing dinner celebrating our honeymoon on 10/16/17. We were seated outside with beautiful views of the bay. We started with margaritas and ordered a few different plates to split including the wagyu, halibut ceviche, ahi ceviche, chicken empanadas and the beef entree. We finished with espresso martinis and two different desserts, the choco-maracuya and alfajores. They were out of this world. They even gave us complimentary glasses of champagne which was the perfect end to our meal. We have truly never had a better meal and we cannot thank Gilberto and La Mar enough for our amazing experience. We are still talking about how unbelievable the food was even a few days later! We will certainly be back on our next visit to San Francisco!

As always, La Mar was fantastic. I took my sister for lunch before her return flight home. I love the food, service and atmosphere but the prices are a bit steep for lunch. You're meant to order a few items and share them. But if you want a variety of items things add up quickly. I spent $140 on lunch for 2 people. This is obviously not an everyday lunch spot. But the food is amazing and it's certainly worth the price for special occasions.

All was good, until we got our food, then we were forgotten. I don’t complain much, so that I’m even saying anything means we were REALLY forgotten. I’ve been there when it was busier and had more attention. The food was excellent, our server was very pleasant, just we were left alone too much after the food was delivered.

Very disappointing meal except for the service which was excellent. We had a good table on the patio and everyone that served the meal did a great job. All very knowledgeable and attentive. It is too bad that the food doesn't match the service. Overpriced for small (even for tapas style) portions. Tasted ok but mainly of spice, non of the nuances we expected from good Peruvian food. The best thing we had was the complimentary plantains with a dipping sauce. The sauce was perfectly seasoned. The cebiche was the biggest disappointment. Have had much better at other Peruvian restaurants that are more moderately priced.

Always a pleasure to dine at La Mar, an authentic Peruvian restaurant, with a special flare of its own. Last Sunday evening was really special as the temperature stayed in the 70's while we ate at an outside table with a perfect view of the Bay. As always, they offered creative dishes, with classic spices, complimented by a very good wine list.

Consistent and excellent food & drinks. Been here number of times, and still perfect, even though they've changed the format a little. Everything, beginning with the great waitstaff, through the Prickly Pear Margarita, the classic (totally yummy) Cebiche & choco-maracuya dessert were excellent. This is a truly great San Francisco restaurant--always fun, too!

As any other Embarcadero restaurant, this place was over priced and not good. The cebiches were mediocre, the waitress took our order and never came back. WE had to hunt someone to get our check and then hunt someone again to pay at the end. Nonetheless, the hostess was very courteous and friendly. We won't be coming back.
