The food here is very very good. We had the cebiche tasting, the causa starter, the pork adobo and the beef lomo saltada. Pisco sours were also good.
The problems with La Mar lie elsewhere. Specifically, with drink timing, course timing, and the venue itself. We ordered Pisco Sours to start and it took almost 15 minutes to get them. This was at a time when the restaurant was not crowded, and there were nearly 40 staff working (we counted). The server brought our starters at the same time the cocktails arrived, too late for the cocktails and too soon for the starters. Our second order of Pisco Sours had the same problem - another almost 15 minutes to arrive. This time, they arrived the same time as our main dishes. We would have been happy to drink our cocktails first and order wine with dinner but that wasn't possible since cocktails and food arrived together.
The venue itself is very noisy inside - although the place was not even half full, we nearly had to yell to hear each other, even though our table was quite small so we were close together. It's a lovely old building, but it has very high ceilings and they've done nothing to mitigate the noise factor, so it feels a bit like the inside of a very busy factory. Probably better if seated outside on the back deck, but of course the evening weather here is unreliable.
Given the cost of the meal (ours came to over $220 without tip), we will look for a restaurant where we can have a better served and slightly quieter meal.
Very noise patio. A lot of people and the server was so busy she was forgivable about things like water refills, etc. however, the food was good and she brought a courtesy dessert for my wife’s birthday.
The service and food were both amazing. Looking forward to go to La Mar again.
Good food. We tried the last Mar experience and it was fantastic!!!
The best parts were the appetizers and cocktails. Entrées were mediocre. Otherwise, the waiters could have been more attentive since there's an hour and half table limit. It was getting very cold and would have liked our check to come in a more timely manner. So we took the initiative to go to the front to pay.
Good food and good atmosphere
This restaurant has lost its soul when you glance at the other table and someone is eating nigiri with chopsticks. This is supposed to be a Peruvian restaurant and Cebicheria. Yet there are only a handful of cebiche, the Classic, the Nikkei (disappointed the ingredients to be straight Japanese instead of the Peruvian version) the Vegan ( defies the meaning of cerbeche), and the Mixto which we end up ordering. This turned up to be disappointing. The star of this dish was supposed to be the fresh seafood but the amount of red onions (garnish) on top overpowers the flavor. The presentation was also unappealing. The morsel of fish looks like leftovers cut instead of nicely cut.
We also ordered Grilled Octupos. Yet another disappointing dish. Octopus by itself is bland and this dish was paired with sweet potatoes+ favs beans purée. The pairing is off, it lacks seasoning to open up the flavors.
The third dish we ordered was Arroz Norteno, a rice dish with shrimp and top with chalacas. I tried to find the chalacas but there none or maybe they were too small. I tried to really love this dish but it had no wow factor. The shrimp was seasoned well but the rice was so so. For $46, I was expecting more.
Our server was missing the majority of our dinning experience. We have to pour our chilled wine by ourselves. He was too busy catering to a group of 6 next to us. He only appeared when we have to pay. There were actually a lot of staff on hand to clean the table and set it up but personal service was lacking. He was also less knowledgeable of what wine is available.
We came on Monday night, June 14, and we were expecting it to be slow. However the restaurant was pack like pre-pandemic. So I asked our server if La Mar was preparing to open tomorrow June 15 as mandated by the Governor. And he replied, we are already open. And he was right. When we left the indoor dining room was also packed. There were no social distancing even on the patio where we sat.
I had asked for outdoor seating. They said I had not when I arrived. . When I look at the survey it says my table was outside.
Great recommendations from server Michael!
You can't go wrong with anything on the menu! It's all fresh great seafood!
Excellent service and even better food! We went for my mom's birthday, it was better than we expected, everything were delicious! very recommendable!
Very nice place, great food! My first tome trying Peruvian food and it was excellent.
Very fresh fish with innovative seasonings. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. A great place for a special occasion.
THIS PLACE IS FANTASTIC! I was so impressed on my first visit one week ago, I came back the following week with friends. Kelsey, the manager was AMAZING! Angelo and Abie our servers were top-notch. The view from the patio was outstanding. Every bite of food was an epicurean experience. This is a place you must go in San Francisco. I'll be back again with more friends and colleagues. Kelsey, look out you've got a regular customer for life.
Fabulous as always. The staff is great and makes everyone feel at home. My favorite place to bring out-of-town guests!
Service was attentive and the food was even better than we remembered! Sitting on the back deck is simply charming. One complaint- there were 2 parties that had dogs with them. The big dog was just too big and furry to be in a restaurant and the little one started barking. I love dogs just as much as anyone but they should stay home when their people go to dinner. Dogs, other than Guide Dogs, should not be allowed.
We had a beautiful dinner with a beautiful view at La Mar. The food was delicious, portions were generous, and the service was incredibly efficient. My only reservation is that the patio are were we sat was very loud so it was difficult for some members of our party to hear.
This is a 5 star restaurant experience! The food, the view, the service, the cocktails. Kind of pricey but worth it for a spectacular experience!
This place is always awesome!
We reserved a table outside because one of our party was not fully vaccinated. When we got there they made us wait inside for 15 minutes, then claimed that we had not specified an outdoor seat. They then sat us at a table (inside) that was way too large for our small group and, which made it very hard to hear what anyone was saying in the incredibly noisy interior. The food was not worth the price either. This s is a disorganized, unsafe tourist trap that is not worth the wait or the prices.
Superb all around. I have dined at the original in Lima and also the restaurant in Cusco. All three are amazing. Go if you can!
Great place. Outside is beautiful view. Fish dishes are best.
Great food, wonderful service. Always a good choice.
Always great ambience and food delightful. really hope they can staff back up post 15 June, poor staff reduced number of wait staff were run off their feet.
Excellent food and service
Delicious food on a beautiful outdoor patio overlooking the bay.
Food was fine. Server was good but hostess said something I have never been told. She informed me that we had a two hour table limit like there was a timer running on our dining experience. Might be the most off-putting policy I have ever encountered. We are dining out to help local restaurants. That wasn’t much of a thank you. Also way, way, too loud music that loud is unnecessary.
The menus is varied and fabulous. The food is spectacular. The service was unobtrusive but attentive. The patio was a great place to eat.
The appetizer platter (ceviche , ahi tuna, etc) + octopus + lomo saltado +crab pasta are amazing! If you go there with some friends order their deserts! I ordered three of their desserts and everything was good!
Definitely one of my fave resto in San Francisco
Very good for ceviche. The rest is average, especially given the price.
Amazing experience! I sat outside where it was quieter and had a beautiful view of the water, but the outdoor covered area was bustling. I ate the best prepared grilled octopus I’ve ever had! The service was excellent everything was timed well.
The food was phenomenal. We can’t recommend the empanadas enough, the sampler is worth it but the chicken empanadas steal the show. The drinks are delicious and pair well with dinner. This is a fun date spot or if you want to eat somewhere delicious while visiting the city.
Amazing and very authentic Peruvian food. Highly recommend it.
Great food. Great wait staff. Our waiter Angelo was very friendly and helpful in picking dishes. The manager Kelsey was very nice and friendly and gave us one the best pieces of chocolate cake I've ever had. I'm going back in a couple of days and bringing two friends. Anyone who likes really good food and great surroundings should definitely give this restaurant a try.
The food here is fresh, delicious, and unique. Some servers and customers are a bit pretentious.
I know it is not their fault directly, but we started having dinner at 10 am and at 11 pm they tell you they have to close the kitchen and that you cannot even order drinks (even if they have a whole cocktail bar area downstairs). It is very disappointing to travel from Miami to celebrate a bachelorette with some friends and to not even have time to chit chat with drinks after dinner.
Having said so, food is delicious at this place, and the service was outstanding.
Another great meal. The magic for me is the ceviche flavors. Not just the protein but the marinade. However the others dishes are all worth having. The prickly pear margarita is worth the indulgence though it is sweet more than sour. The rear outdoor patio is a great spot with heaters during these famously cool SF evenings!
Food and drinks were outstanding. Tasting menu was pricey but, wonderful.
