The bar was very fun as we arrived early ahead of the reservation. Amazing cocktails. We were seated right inside at an awful table cramped in the corner under a palm tree that felt claustrophobic. No views of the water or even remote views of the nicer area of the restaurant. Service was quite slow but the food was delicious.
Worth your dollar. I will be dining here again, and the staff was very attentive.
We love the food at La Mar and have dined there numerous times. However this evening we did not receive everything we ordered. Our server did not pay attention to our order and after a considerable wait, entrees were the first thing to arrive. Needless to say we declined our appetizer. What was most disappointing was that although our waiter said he was sorry, there was no indication they really cared. A bit of a downer on what should have been a nice evening.
So here’s the deal, is the food good? Yes it is.
Full disclosure I am a restaurant owner in San Francisco as well so because of high rents and labor costs so dining out in SF is always more expensive then it “should” be, but we are all use to it.
However the problem that I had here was the value, like I said in my first line the food here is good, the loss in value was the service, it was shaky, unpolished and abrupt. When you are charging 79.00 for octopus entree, the service needs to match.
Will I go back to La Mar, yes absolutely. I’ll just go knowing I’m going to be happy with the food and request a table on the patio so I can enjoy the scenery.
Staff was great! Food was excellent! Great atmosphere.
Delicious food, attentive and kind staff make La Mar a great place for dinner.
Great experience - again! This place has been consistently delicious and delightful year after year after year! Don’t miss it!
We were seated quickly and they were very gracious in allowing to choose our seating. Our waiter was amazing very friendly and patience with us and made good suggestions! Food was amazing as always and fresh. Will be back for sure!
Great experience- good food, service, and ambiance.
I had been dreaming of dining at La Mar for sometime and the stars finally aligned this past weekend, as I invited a few girlfriends to have our Friday night dinner there.
The evening started off delightful, as the restaurant was stylish and modern, well suited for the Embarcadero. The hosts and bussers were also lovely and prompt. However, the atmosphere dramatically went downhill as soon as we spoke to our waiter because he came off as impatient and annoyed. He didn't allow us to order drinks, which we were about to put in, because he scurried off. He would do that constantly throughout the meal-- as soon as he saw us start to ponder, he would leave. We would have appreciated suggestions instead of having him leave and be annoyed. He also kept asking to remove our plates, when we were clearly still enjoying the dishes and attempted to pick up the check a couple of times, when we were not ready to pay.
Ultimately, we tried a few ceviches: the mixto, California and classico. All were extremely fresh and each with special taste from the other. We also tried the chicken empanadas and las roquitas, which were delicious! Although, the best part of the meal was the chocolate mousse! It had strong cocoa and beautiful berry notes, very reminiscent of Peru itself.
The food was a delight, yet I would not recommend la Mar because of the service received that night. I am disappointed and embarrassed, because I recommended this place so strongly to my friends and I felt as if I let them down.
As we were pressed with our time, we requested a timely service to a waitperson. She was very helpful and efficient to accommodate our needs. We were very impressed with the services and the foods
We had a wonderful experience at La Mar! The wait staff was incredible friendly and really took the time to explain the menu and its roots in Peruvian culture. The food was also incredible- extremely flavorful, well balanced and stunning to looks at. The meal was a bit pricey but it’s definitely worth the trip out for a special occasion or celebration with family.
La Mar as always is a wonderful place to have dinner with a group. We only had four in a group this time but it’s enough to try so many delicious dishes. The service was excellent. Always asking how we are doing and making sure we had enough to drink. The view of the bay is always an added bonus!
First time trying the Petuvian food and everyone explain the food and flavours and even recomendations.
The food and serive was amazing and we will be looming for the La Mar resturants again.
Super authentic Peruvian cuisine. One of the best Lomo Saltado I've ever had including many from Lima.
Poor inattentive service. Lack of food quality. Bar is okay.
One of the truly great restaurants in San Francisco or anywhere. I'm a big fan of Latin cooking, and I have yet to see a restaurant that matches La Mar. The food is colorful, original, and delicious. The menu is vast and everything I have ever had is memorable. The service is first rate: friendly and attentive. And the place is beautiful: a sprawling old warehouse that was completely renovated, it's gorgeous and inviting, with a huge outdoor area that sits literally over San Francisco Bay, right next to the Ferry Building. My wife and I take the Ferry Boat from Marin for dinner, and ride back afterward. Can't say enough about it: it's my favorite restaurant in San Francisco, unique and unforgettable.
Thank you so much for everyone that helped make our experience so amazing. Can’t wait to come back.
Love you La Mar!!
Wonderful, attentive service.
Great menu for sharing! Enjoyed the lovely bay view while dining.
Great service. Great food.
The service was so poor that even though the food was good, I can only remember the bad service when I think about this restaurant experience. No one really paid attention to us. We barely got water. The complimentary crisps came late. And both tables next to us got numerous servings of the crisps while we watched with dismay. We were starving as we waited for our food....which didn’t show up for an HOUR because our server forgot to put in our order. The crisp-filled tables were seated after us, got their food, and were long gone before our food showed up. Such a frustrating dining experience! And the restaurant was far from full. I will never return. P.S. the bathrooms are disgusting
La Mar was a great experience. Food was fresh and delicious, we ordered a few 'sampler' platters to share with group. Everything was so good that it is difficult to pick one item but I think the cibeche wins star of the show.
Only downside is that we had to sit inside, not sure if this option or request is available on OpenTable. It was a beautiful afternoon and would have made the lunch even better!
The atmosphere is sophisticated, yet comfortable. The food is special, fit for any foodie. The service is warm, friendly and attentive. Couldn't ask for more.
Appetizers where great. Main course tasteless and overpriced!
From appetizer to dessert, dining at La Mar was a culinary trip to Peru. We tried the specialties and loved the fresh fish with complex and delicious spices. The desserts were also amazing. Each bite of the sherbets and mango/chocolate mousse sang with bright flavor. The restaurant is next to the water, with cooling breezes, and nicely decorated inside. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive. I hope to go there again.
Very disappointed with the Executive Menu option, specifically with the Lomo Saltado. Let me tell you that while it is sold as "lomo", you will actually not get a cut of lomo but instead a piece of boiled and then fried piece of meat, as told to us by the manager. But even with this explanation, the meat we got tasted and looked like PORK, not steak in any way, shape or form. And to sell this as lomo saltado while the preparation is boiling the meat and then frying it, it is not a lomo saltado as Peruvians know it, and that should be clearly explained to the client. Also, please note that the meat served under the Executive Menu is not the same meat as in the standalone dish. So Gaston, get it right and serve the real thing to your clients or at least let us know what we will be actually getting. Thank you.
Just stunning! An array of flavours and superb twists from the taste menu. Brilliant service from our waitress with recommendations for wine that complimented the food options. Highly recommend.
Great food, excellent service, a tiny bit noisy but it adds to the fun of it
Great location, ambience and the most delicious ceviche. Mostly hits and a couple of misses with the dishes we ordered. The beef heart was tough to cut through with regular knife and the paella dish had mouthfuls of hard uncooked rice. The other dishes such as the conquetta, octopus and most of the seafood was done really well. Fun atmosphere and definitely a spot to bring out of town guests
La Mer felt very much a business dinner type place. It is in a fantastic location, however the food and service while not bad didn't blow us away! Now this might have been our expectation was high, we all love Peruvian food, particularly Coya and Lima in London, so was a little disappointed with the ceviche which although tasty was more like sashimi size pieces of fish. The empanadas were outstanding. The skewers where meh! The beef heart skewer just tasted, well it actually didn't taste of anything!
The server and the lady bussing the table were really pleasant and I would have given a 4 star if it hadn't been for the senior guy reprimanding the lady bussing the table right next to us for something that we hadn't even noticed or commented on. In fact she was very polite and helpful. Please coach/reprimand your staff away from table and preferable not in earshot of the diners!
I wouldn't recommend La Mer, the food is okay, service okay and it is not cheap!
Excellent service and delicious food. Unusual & creative combinations, great flavors, beautiful preparation.
Great food and fantastic service. Very nice seating area outside.
Super Insider Tip, obwohl an der Touristenmeile gelegen- sehr nettes Personal und eine tolle Weinkarte. Das Essen war hervorragend. Einziger kleiner Nachteil. Es wurde gegen 19.30 sehr laut. Kann man aber immer noch aushalten.
We had a fantastic dinner here on Monday night. The patio seating and view were exceptional. Our server was knowledgeable and fun. She made awesome recommendations where each was better than the one before. Will definitely be back and highly recommend this to anyone wanting a special dining experience.
Creative, tasty food, very helpful staff. Worth the drive and the cost.
We always enjoy the food and the vibe here. Food is so fresh, flavorful, and authentic. They even accommodated our two furry children on the deck.
You should have this type of cevicheria en every main city of the United States, how about one in Los Angeles?
On vacation and could not wait for girlfriend to try this place... she loved it! Said it was her new favorite restaurant. Food as always was great.
We are Peruvians and know of La Mar since we used to live in Peru. Victoriano is a great chef. The flavor was as close as you can get to authentic Peruvian cuisine outside of the motherland, while also being inventive. I wish they had pictures of the plates on the website so you can have an idea of how they look like and how big they are...we ended up eating way too much! But that’s ok when everything is so good.
