If you're looking for a healthy balance of well-portioned food, beautiful decor and some prestige for your special occasion dinner, La Goulue is the place. I've seen many fancy restaurants serve smaller portions for three times the price they're worth; one place in Brooklyn averaged hundreds of customers at dinner time every day, clearly not needing exuberant prices to stay in business, yet serving small portions that leave you hungry. This turns away many potential customers who don't have $300 to spend on a 1/4 a steak. At La Goulue, though, the food was pristinely-presented, tasty and filled us up. The decor is simple but elegant, the place was air-conditioned, intimately-designed and never crowded. While the seats were a bit stiff, we were still comfortable the whole time. The service was sharp, warm, and deserves praise for efficiency. Between appetizers, the complimentary bread and the exchanging of old plates and new dishes, the servers cleaned with precision and without intrusiveness. They deserved the high tips, and they were all dressed for success. This type of traditional service is refreshing. Overall, our 5-year anniversary dinner was pleasant and we felt full all night (and we arrived at 7pm). We even received a complimentary glass of wine for the occasion, which was a nice surprise. For your anniversary, birthday or special occasion dinner, this is a traditional, recommended experience. Regarding price, remember that it's not the place to go every week for most of us, however, for special occasions, it's worth treating your partner or treating each other to high-value food and service with a classy atmosphere on top of it.

Very bland and uninspired fish dishes. Fish was overcooked. Wife had striped bass and I had trout. My wife's bass was dry and basically was just grilled and put over bland diced tomatoes on top of some string beans with no sauce, seasoning or special plating. Trout was supposed to have mushrooms and be almondine but only had two tiny mushrooms and two slivers of almond. Food used to be special here and wonderfully plated but no more. Not sure if they are having chef issues.

First time back since opened at this location. We just moved to the neighborhood and this will now be our “ go to”! Fabulous steak tartare! Bibb lettuce salad w perfect french mustard dressing. The steak was also perfectly cooked! Yup-a total red meat evening. Also, delicious wines by glass and nice pour. Bravo!

Bad experience. Poor judgment to open all of your windows and doors when air pollution in NYC was at an all time high. I have had some breathing issues today and I blame it on my time at your restaurant. I exercised poor judgment by staying.

Too arrogant and not comfortable at all. Always staggering tables, no friendliness from the staff, disgusting tartare, a banal and extremely inappropriate crab salad, and, well, an incredibly high check, which is extremely inconsistent with the quality. Once this restaurant could be called a worthwhile and valuable find, but now only the name remains of it. Don’t recommend.

Always excellent food at this reliable bistro, but the sidewalk table was a little too exposed to traffic noise and passersby. The attentive server must have taken a break when we ordered more wine towards the end of lunch, as it only appeared with the check.

For some this dining experience would’ve been a disaster. Several things went wrong, but every step of the way things were corrected, and in the end, the service, food, and experience was extremely positive. I have dined here many times, and I am happy to report, this place knows how to extend great hospitality, even when they fall short. Will definitely return.
