Always dependable and quiet so that we can talk. Soup and salad is included so you don't have to decide.
I went here with a friend for restaurant week. I think that they probably pre-made a lot of the food, and for this reason, I would try it again at a different time.
We were seated right away. Although we had to wait for a minute at the hostess' stand. It is a French restaurant so I did have some moderate/high expectations, especially since there are white table clothes. Everything spells out fancy.
We were given bread and butter. I expected to have warm bread and soft butter because chain restaurants do that. We didn't get that our bread was cold and the butter was too cold to spread.
Next came the soup, which was potato leek and it was really good.
The salad was so-so because the pieces of lettuce were too big. I'm at a nice restaurant I should have nice bite-size pieces of lettuce. It was also overly dressed for my taste, but that really isn't a big deal.
Next came the entree. I ordered the filet mignon with steamed vegetables and potatoes. The filet was good. The vegetables were very mushy, British style mushy. The potatoes sadly tasted like the home fries I had for breakfast from SSU.
For dessert, we had the poached pear tart, which I wouldn't order again because pears have no taste and we could not eat the dessert with just a fork. I really needed a knife to cut through the phyllo dough. I was able to pick up the whole dessert with my fork, which really doesn't make a nice dining experience.
One of the BEST Caesar salads we’ve ever had. My husband’s order of escargot large, a true French restaurant. My Le Coc au Vin was wonderful. My husband ordered the duck a la orange with the sauce on the side since usually the sauce is so sweet but this sauce was light and tasty next he’s ordered as offered. We were lucky to have tasted the creme brûlée and the tart nice.
Our server Alex was attentive and we look forward to going again.
Though our waiter Alex had only been there just 3 months, his service and attentiveness was better than I've received in a long time. It was a busy night, "Restaurant week", the place was packed and yet he didn't miss a beat! Kudos for employing such great staff! Thank you Alex!
Thank you for being a part of the Sonoma County Restaurant week. We enjoyed our evening!
We went back to an old favorite for Restaurant Week-Le Gare. It was still delicious, nicely presented food and friendly service. Nice to know that it is still a local gem!
Two friends and I went for Sonoma County Restaurant Week. It was a good special for a full dinner including dessert. The steak was perfectly done and tender, the soup, salad and dessert were good and the wine by the glass was a great recommendation by our excellent, attentive and personable waiter. However, the tables were crowded together to accommodate as many people as possible, ( too close); therefore, the noise level was relatively high. All in all though, a good meal at a place I'd like to return.
The food was wonderful. We went for restaurant week. I wish they had a pre fix menu like they do for restaurant week all the time.
I would go every week :)
My wife and I had a great meal at La Gare. For such a nice place the prices are excellent. The service was top-notch. It's a bit cramped inside (you will be almost rubbing elbows with the tables around you) but the quality of the service and food more than make up for it. We are looking forward to going back.
Had a reservation at opening and temperature was cool at first. Food was modestly flavorful. Filet Mignon was moderately tender and not full of flavor. Service was very good. Overall not good enough an experience to warrant a return.
For us this was a “one and done”. While the service was amicable, the food was a tremendous disappointment. I had the coq au vin, and they actually may have used a rooster the chicken was so over cooked and tough. We both felt our meals were heavily over salted and excessively buttered.
The ambiance is very 70’s retro, but not in a cool-vibe way, rather in need of makeover.
We really wanted to like this local Railroad Square offering but it came up short when it came down to the cooking.
We had a great experience. Our waiter was fun and had a great personality. The food was scrumptious. Look forward to going there again!
Requested a intimate table for birthday. We got the opposite. Waiter was good, food was mediocre. I expect to get what I pay for in terms of perfectly cooked, quality food and that was not the case here. I will not be returning.
Their restaurant week menu is very reasonable and very good. Our waiter was very nice! Thanks for the good service and ver good filet mignon.
Good. Not great. Nothing special. Nothing bad. Bland.
We went for restaurant week. The prim fixe was steak or salmon, and we had one of each. The food was good, but nothing that surprised us. The steak was well prepared, but a little tough for a filet. The salmon was also well prepared, but seemed poached in butter with a very light color and fairly heavy tasted. It did melt in your mouth. We will definitely go back as the menu is very interesting. Also, the decor is dated, but gives it a quaint, homey feel. The restaurant was buzzing with a full house and waiting area.
Absolutely delightful...our table of 8 was well served with delicious food!
We found LaGare during Sonoma County Restaurant week and celebrated my Mom's 88th birthday. We were a party of 4 with reservations and were seated right away in a nice booth. The ambiance was warm but not too fancy. The noise level was perfect for conversation. The Caesar salad was one of the best I have had and the French Onion soup was yummy. I had the filet and it was cooked to perfection and very tasty. The dessert of creme brulee was crunchy all the way around and was thin so just wonderful! There was a candle in Mom's dessert and everyone sang. It doesn't get much better!
Mark, the waiter was superb. And the restaurant was very sweet and provided a birthday dessert with candle. Lovely touch. House salad was excellent.
It always seems like a special occasion when we dine at La Gare. Food is always good
My first time in at least 25 years, it was pretty much how I remembered it. The service and food was very good. The seating is a little crowded between the 2 tops. We had potato leek soup, caesar salad and filet mignon. They were all quite tasty, the carrots were very sweet with obvious added sugar which was disappointing, but the potatoes were quite good. Had the infamous creme bruleé for dessert. The wine by the glass price is very high in my opinion. 2 glasses of zin was the same price as my whole dinner.
Great meal and service. Highly recommended
We absolutely loved La Gare! The food was amazing as well as the atmosphere and the service. We had sweetbreads and pork schnitzle which were both amazing. And the dome dessert was incredible! Tim our waiter was exceptional. And the owner, Gladys was simply wonderful! We would most definitely return whenever we are in the area!!
They were running about 30+ minuets behind with our reservation because of the earlier reservations arriving late but I was NOT bothered by this at all!!! I was able to enjoy a glass of wine in the waiting area and had nice extra time with my husband. Good people watching as well. They were very apologetic and I was understanding (not everyone else was understanding). Great food, nice staff, a little spendy but a fabulous time all around.
We checked in at 7:00 p.m. for our reservation time and were told it would be a few minutes before we would be seated. The waiting room was packed. We sat there like sardines for 40 minutes before giving up and going home. If it had been our first visit to this restaurant, this would have been a terrible first impression. If the restaurant is overbooked due to a private party (which may have been the case), the online reservation system should not accept reservations for that time slot. Very disappointing.
My husband and I have been coming here since we met 37 years ago for special occasions primarily because everything about this restaurant is consistent yet stays up with the times. This is one of the most comfortable and reliable spots in the downtown neighborhood, don’t miss it!
Food was very bland. Very noisey.
My family and friends were delighted to be served here as two were from France and thought the whole experience was outstanding. Merci!
Honesty is the best policy. We arrived on time and checked in for our 6:45pm reservation. Probably 10 people standing around in the small foyer. By 7:15 pm there were at least 30 people standing around in the small foyer and no explanation from the management as to why no one was being seated, or for that matter why so few people were leaving their tables. Also no word on when we might get seated. We left. What was the point in staying. It would have been kind and courteous of management to set an expectation if they were having delays that evening due to staffing, etc., and maybe offer a glass of wine while we waited. It would have cost them very little and I would have been quite content to wait it out. But, as it is after that experience the probability of returning is near zero.
I was very excited to take my wife and daughter to La Gare. However, the wait time from the time we ordered our meal to our table was way to long. I ordered the veal cordon bleu, when it came it had no cheese. I sent it back and by the time it came back my family had already finished eating. The wait staff did an amazing job and mentioned that the inconsistency to my meal was due to a stand in chef.
My wife and I had a lovely time. The atmosphere is special and the waiters do care about giving you a good experience.
We sat in one of the smaller rooms off the main dining room and enjoyed the quieter and more intimate atmosphere.
All the parts of the meal were delicious.
We will be back.
La Gare always satisfies, wonderful food, superb service and a warm welcome from hostess Jackie. All meals include a delicious soup and salad. I recommend it in the highest possible terms.
A very friendly environment with a value meal including soup and salad that is routinely tasty in a restaurant where the waiter makes us feel like he remembers us. . A great place for a party or a night out for a loving couple. Generous with their wine pours.
They were busy so service from seating to finish was a little slow. My husband had been wanting to try the beef Wellington for a while now and when it was served it was a big disappointment. He wanted medium rare and the meat was cooked to completely brown on the inside as well as tough and very difficult to cut. My sister had the same experience with her duck. Looked overcooked and was difficult to cut. Everything else to the meal was fine.
Being a local in Santa Rosa I have eaten here several times and have ALWAYS had an excellent meal and exceptional service. This last visit, though, my veal cordon bleu was a bit dry and tough; still delicious, just a bit disappointing. It was a very thin cut of veal. which contributed to the dryness and a slightly thicker cut would have stood up to the cooking time perfectly. Do not believe I'll order this entree again. Overall, however, one slightly sub-par entree compared to at least 30 other entrees I've had here, their average is pretty good!
This was the 27th anniversary of our first date at La Gare, and the chef continues to create the authentic French cuisine we loved the first time. Our appetizers were great - can't go wrong with a huge shrimp "cocktail" and classic escargots with the luscious butter and garlic. The rack of lamb was done perfectly with a great dijon mustard crust; the beef tenderloin also excellent. And a nice treat with a complimentary dessert for our occasion - creamy chocolate mousse.
It was okay--not great. We had been there several times before. We had a reservation and had to wait about 30 minutes. Don't go if you are in a hurry. Fortunately, we weren't in a hurry.
A bit overpriced for the quality of food. The service started out well but quickly became horrible.
Great meal, excellent service!
Great place for a romantic evening. No TV's, no noisy bar scene. A restaurant that still has white tablecloths. Its been in business for thirty four years.
