La Gare French Restaurant
Daily 5:00 pm–9:00 pm
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at La Gare. Clearly a Santa Rosa icon, it seemed everyone knew everyone else. The food was exceptional- beef tenderloin with bearnaise was outstanding. Our favorite part of dinner was our waiter Mark. Affable but didn’t intrude. He has been there 31 years and has some good stories.
Had the Pork Schnitzel special. Had a wonderful taste and was the most tender pork schnitzel I had ever had.
Food as good as ever. Service was average this time. I'm so use to coming here and having very professional service. This time they were not quite as friendly and in control as usual. Service was not bad, just not up to the excellence we usually have.
I’ve been coming to this restaurant for the last 13 years enjoyed it every time at come there
Very nice. Food excellent the server was attentive with personality.
I had the pleasure of dining at La Gare last night and I have to say, it's never a disappointment ! Excellent service tops off their fabulous cuisine. The most amazing part is, they still include soup and salad with their entrees, something you never see anymore. If you haven't been to this delightful French restaurant, make a reservation soon!!
Best French Cuisine in Sonoma County.
Lovely time, as always! My daughter (5yo) loved eating the escargot.
We finished off our vacation with a romantic dinner here. Everything was exceptional!!!
Always - consistently good food and great service! Thank you Alex! Absolutely love the Monday night no corkage value!
Amazing food but the service was lacking. Definitely recommend if you love French food, though, you won't be disappointed!
I don't understand why I am REQUIRED to write a review? Aren't stars enough? So, OK, it's a great restaurant. Great food. Nice ambiance.
Service was excellent as always. Friendly and attentive without being in the way. Food was good, but would not order the veal cordon blue again. A bit over cooked. Creamed spinach was also too salty. Told our waiter and he apologized and reported to chef. But will we go again? Absolutely.
Honestly, I rarely write reviews. I was so disappointed in the overall experience that I felt I had to say something. This is supposed to be a French restaurant. The soup of the day was minestrone. The special was Halibut. What? My brother-in-law had coq au vin. It was so overcooked, he didn't eat more than two bites. My husband had the Beef Wellington, the mushrooms were on the plate instead of inside the puff pastry so it was soggy immediately. I had veal medallions which were decent. The vegetables on all our plates were extremely salty. The escargot was acceptable and the onion soup was ok. But overall I would not go to this restaurant again. With all the good restaurants in the area, this is not a good choice.
Outstanding as always
We had a lovely early dinner. It was a hot evening and this was a great spot
Menu on open table needs to be updated - prices totally different and food & wine barely average
All courses were delicious. The Boeuf Wellington was tender and cooked as ordered. My wife had lamb with a wonderful sauce.
Our waiter was attentive and fun to talk with.
Prices were very reasonable for the quality of food. Highly recommended.
This was an amazing experience! First time here and did not know what to expect. When my wife and I walked in , we walked back in time to a classic French restaurant with a family/ neighborhood feel. We were greeted by Gladys, the owner. Sat down at a table for two and greeted by our waiter, Mark, who had worked there for over 30 years. Everyone seemed to know each other and friendly conversation was happening all around us. There was an older gentleman who was wearing a baseball cap that we were told he was 108 years old! OMG! The menu came and I ordered Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc. My wife had the Le Cox au Vin and I had the Prawns sautéed bordelaise. The food was amazing! The staff very attentive and friendly. This place is a must if you are anywhere near Sara Rosa.
Notwithstanding the city of Santa Rosa’s extended parking meter hours (props to the restaurant for alerting guests to this policy), we had a wonderful dining experience at ale Gare. The beef bourguignon was amazing as was the tournedos of beef
Moderately priced wine list and free corkage on Mondays
All entrees include soup and salad — a rarely th s days!
Has become one of our favorite places—We’ll be back...
Delicious food, excellent service & menu choices, several table-side carvings or flambé desserts. Great Sonoma Co wine list.
Our waiter John was excellent. Had the best anniversary dinner.
Wonderful French restaurant with gluten-free options for almost entire menu. We took the SMART train from San Rafael (the restaurant is just one block from the station). Unfortunately the last train departs Santa Rosa at 7 p.m. Hope this changes soon.
There were four of us who got together for dinner and each of us had a different entre. I had beef wellington which was delicious and cooked perfectly. One friend had the rack of lamb and said it was the best he had ever had. Another friend had the salmon and said that was delicious and the sauce that was served with it was delicious. The fourth person had a steak and said it was exceptional. Each meal came with soup and salad and fresh warm sourdough French bread and butter. I am salivating just thinking about the meal we all had and can't wait to go back again. The service was excellent as well as the atmosphere. I have been to La Gare several times, and this meal was as delicious as all of the rest. All of the working there are so friendly and actually so were the people eating there this evening. A lovely time was had by all of us and our out of town guests from Carmel Valley said that it was a great choice of restaurants to go too. They had a wonderful time too.
It was our 41st wedding anniversary and had been a few years since we were there last. Good to know that the food was still amazing - the staff stellar! This really is a wonderful little gem!
Dined here on vacation, can see why it’s a local favorite. Our appetizers were excellent and the cherries jubilee was presented wonderfully and tasted great.
We had a great dinner--food was excellent. Very comfortable.
What a delightful surprise! I had read about this restaurant for many years but never had an occasion to come visit. I am so glad I did and will be recommending La Gare to all my friends. The table side preparation of the Cesar salad was delightful. Everything was cooked to order and delicious! Oh, and leave room for desert! Ask for Mark!!
What a wonderful find! I'm not from the Sonoma County area, but found this place based on its positive reviews and am so happy I did! The staff treated everyone coming in the door like family, the food was excellent and I left with a big smile on my face and cannot wait to return!
The pate appetizer was excellent, the soup and salad were decent. The veal cordon bleu entree was disappointing. The cheese and ham flavors were too strong for the veal. The presentation didn’t make the dish look palatable. Although the vegetable and potato sides had nice flavors and were not over-cooked which can happen sometimes. The veal schnitzel was passable but the gravy tasted like it was not homemade. Veal is difficult to do well, and both dishes were disappointing.
My husband and I celebrated our 41st anniversary at La Gare on June 11. Very special and excellent service. Food was delicious!
Very busy. Good value for ok food. Excellent service. Hard seats. Very crowded, uncomfortable.
Great old school classic French.
We were traveling from out of state and we picked this restaurant based on other reviews and wanted a special place to celebrate our anniversary. They listed chateaubriand so that made it a spot we wanted to try. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and the evening just got better as Tim, our waiter began our dining experience. He was well-versed in the menu - food and wine, he was pleasant and interacted enough to be attentive but not intrusive. Soup and salad came with the meal and were delicious. Not really a soup fan but the soup that night was cream of mushroom and it was so fresh and delicious. The chateaubriand was served tableside and that made the meal that much more special. We shared a half bottle of wine which Tim's recommendation was great and a dessert which was very tasty.
As we were leaving, the owner took time to chat with us about our meal and our trip. The portions were more than enough and priced reasonable for what we had. We had such a relaxing experience and can't wait to get back to the area to try the rest of their menu.
Great food everytime we go, this is our 4 time and it is always great!!!
Always a great experience here. The quality and service have been great for the 30 years I've been going there.
Very nice to eat well and dress well too. Service is wonderful. Very kind and well trained service for very good food.
We’ve been wanting to go here for many, many years - and finally made it happen. This is definitely one of the better restaurants in Santa Rosa - which good restaurants in Santa Rosa are extremely limited, to say the least !!!
We enjoy dining in Napa Valley, Healdsburg, San Francisco etc. frequently . . . so, in saying that, the food here was good (not great) . . . but the service was some of the best you’ll find in the Bay Area - Tim was our waiter . . . and we cannot say enough great things about Tim, extremely talented.
We asked for a quiet table and a server with good knowledge and good at table cooking skills. We got it all! Happy 48th Anniversary to us!
We got the Swiss Room to ourselves, with a corner table where we could look at the Craftsman lights and fans and see the servers.
Thank you to John, the front of the house manager, for making this happen. I wasn’t able to thank him personally as we left. So thank you John!
Our server was Alex, another find.
We started with a half bottle of Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc priced at $30 which I thought was very reasonable.
We got a house-supplied starter of tomato soup that was dandy.
Then we had a Caesar salad that Alex prepared at table. It was great. Wooden bowl rubbed with garlic, raw egg yolk, anchovies, olive oil etc with Romaine that was already cut in bite-size chunks. IMHO the parmigiana reggiano was in the dressing since it wasn’t sprinkled on the top. And the croutons were a mix of soft but toothy instead of the dried out bits I normally get.
My bride had the Shrimp Provençal and loved it. I had the Frogs Legs Provençal which simply the best I’ve had, either here or in France. It was an eggy batter (like you get on Calamari Dore sometimes), covered with a really nice Provençal sauce with enough bite to stand up to the frogs legs and the eggy batter.
Dessert was Cherries Jubilee done at table by our new best pal Alex.
A truly memorable meal, from start to finish.
I was there with friends for a birthday. I’ve been going to La Gare for 30 years and i’m always delighted with all that this wonderful restaurant has to offer. The food is perfect. The service is always over the top friendly and personable. This fine restaurant really has it all!
I had the filet of sole, my friends had salmon and halibut. All of our meals came with soup, salad, veggies & rice. It’s unbelievable that soup & salad come with the meal! No detail is overlooked here. For dessert we had a fabulous creme brûlée, butter pecan ice cream and the birthday person was presented with a courtesy chocolate mousse with a candle! All that and singing! Lol
This place is truly a gem! Go there! You will be delighted!
