La Foret ha an extensive wine list, which includes French and Napa Valley selections. It offers a tasting menu and brunch on Sundays.
This restaurant has private rooms for catering banquet-style private events. It also hosts weddings with capacity for up to 130 guests.
Went for a birthday, they were able to accommodate a special food request even though it was not on the menu. One of the best experiences I have had in a restaurant in a long time!
Been to this restaurant many times over the years, but no more. The tasting menu is not structured with balance. Protein heavy. Second, the individual dishes are so ordinary. There is no flair in the dishes to be compiled for a tasting. The Grand Marnier soufflé is one of my favorite. Again the beauty has been taken out of its presentation from days past,
We enjoyed the dining experience very much and we will be back . Not just for anniversaries and birthdays only.
Wonderful evening! Food and service were great! I would have liked a little more lobster in my lobster ravioli entree.
My husband & I went to La Foret for a date night. The food was amazing, but the noise level was off the charts loud!!! So loud in fact we considered leaving. We are not the quite romantic types nestled in a corner type of people, so when I say it’s loud, it’s loud. Too many people packed in a not so very large room. Overall I would recommend this restaurant to friends, but it would let them know to be prepared for the noise.
LaForet was excellent as always. And for you old timers, they have put the veal back on the menu, permanently! Don't forget the Grand Marnier soufflé for dessert.
Excellent meal and experience!!!
Perfect place for a special dinner.
Lots of amazing choices. The staff was exceptional
Always OUTSTANDING!! Made our anniversary very special
Simple provincial french food.
Not bad but significantly overpriced!
Pity, the bread was not nice.
Service is very good and the location of the restaurant is nice
We had our wedding anniversary dinner here and the food was great, the server was funny and accurate in all the questions we posed him about the food. We had a nice quiet table with a view of the small creek. I suggest going early before it gets crowded. Overall, a wonderful experience.
We went there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The lady who greeted us congratulated us but our server did not mention it at all. We noticed that most other customers were getting cake and candle for their special occasions, but not us.
Also, the customers sitting at the table next to us were very load .
As far as fine French cuisine goes, the food was disappointing. We had the 7-course tasting menu and I really couldn’t find even 1 dish that I would return for. I’m perfectly used to the small portion sizes, that did not bother me at all. However the flavorings were off and were at times off-putting even.
The service of some of the staff was exceptional, but you could tell of some servers that were new to fine dining. For example, keeping our used silverware from the previous dish and returning it to the table like a buffet waiter would. Or not removing a used plate, and simply moving it to the side to make room for a new dish. Why wouldn’t the server just remove that plate that didn’t have any more food on it, just leftover sauce?
Obviously we were expecting the price of the food to be where it was at, but I feel it wasn’t commensurate with the experience.
We had gone there for our first date and just celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. Our server, Isabella was wonderful and everyone was so polite. We especially loved the dress code as there are not many restaurants that now have dress codes.
The food was exceptional, we absolutely enjoyed ourselves.
We had the best seat in the house as we overlooked the creek, saw with wildlife outside with the beautiful settings.
La Foret was quite the find! Nestled in the old Almaden region of San Jose, this restaurant becomes its own destination. In the 'days of old' this was a part of the Quicksilver mining industry -- long gone, but what a fun way to preserve this historical landmark! Service was exceptional with experienced staffing throughout. We love mixing up our dinners, and it is not unusual for us to have hors d'oeuvres, salad, and jump right to dessert. The servings were perfect for that -- although, we will definitely come back to try the entrees. An extra-special plus was having a window seat and gazing out at the meandering creek next to the restaurant. This is a must-try restaurant for those with discriminating taste who value the historical re-creation into a fine-dining establishment.
Service was excellent and the food was even better. Few restaurants in the South Bay can match it. By-the-glass wine prices are a bit over the top.
First time back under new ownership. Food was awful and the choices available were nothing I would ever want to eat. We have dined there many times over the years and will never return.
Disappointing. Sea Scallops were terrible. Martini was room temperature with old olives. Service very slow, only came when we were talking then interrupted. Bison was fatty and broccoli was raw. Way too expensive for poor service and food.
After 20+ years living in the Bay Area, we finally made it to La Foret, to celebrate our anniversary. Nestled in a wooded area in the Almaden Valley area of San Jose, this restaurant offers a timeless continental dining experience. The wait staff are all in tuxedos, and the food was prepared with great technical skill. We enjoyed escargots and need tartar as starters, along with an exquisitely fresh tomato tart that included both a light tomato custard-mousse along with garden-fresh tomatoes in delicate pastry crust. I had cream of artichoke soup and Hunny had a simple fresh greens salad with a Dijon vinaigrette. For the mains, I had a confit leg and breast of duck, accompanied by a polenta-like firm corn cake and fresh vegetables. Hunny had the ribeye on a bed of mashed potatoes, along with fresh vegetables. We ended the meal with a light-as-a-cloud soufflé. What really made the occasion stand out was the level of service. We arrived about 40 minutes early so we could have a leisurely cocktail at the bar beforehand. The bartender greeted us with “Happy Anniversary”, which was a nice touch. Everyone was attentive without being intrusive. We had a really delightful time.
A special place for a special celebration
We had 3 birthdays and 1 celebration of life.
The food is very special and expensive.
Not a great place. Food was mediocre, waiters did not have a good knowledge of wines, not much of vegetarian options
We visited to celebrate our anniversary. Upon arrival the host acknowledged the occasion. We were there with another couple. Our waiter was very personable and we shared stories. He helped with our decisions on selecting our meal. We each had something different and were more than satisfied with our choices. I had the veal and it was delicious. My husband had bison which he had never had before and he was delighted with his selection. It was wonderful, cooked to perfection with great flavor. We all finished with the Grand Mariner soufflés.
We loved our dining experience and will definitely be back for special occasions.
My wife and I, attended la Foret for our one year wedding anniversary. When we first arrived got seated on the top floor nice room. Server was great, had one server for a good amount of tables so time was needed. Lobster ravioli was phenomenal along with the cream of mushroom soup. The main entrees were a bit disappointing, my wife ordered the prawn entree and it was a bit over cooked, understanding prawns take quite skill to get just right. I ordered the rib eye medium well and our server had to take it back due to undercooked. Overall it was a good experience unfortunately we will not be coming back.
Our waiter, Allen was great. The service great, the bread perfectly toasted, the food absolutely perfect
Great food, great service and they don’t rush you out the door. We will definitely be back!
The food and service were excellent. Our waiter Jerry and the busser did a fantastic job to make our evening special and celebrate my partner’s birthday in a memorable way. The host (Sami) was very professional, a true Maître d’hôtel. Very pleasant experience overall. We will definitely go back for another special occasion despite the high price. La Foret serves fairly standard French cuisine. We enjoyed the five course tasting menu. The scallops were our favorite dish and was cooked to perfection . We thought the quail was a bit unidimensional and just slightly overdone. The Filet was perfected seared. The service was excellent. Alan was knowledgeable and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our celebration.
Our family brunch was delicious and lovely! It was a such an enjoyable afternoon!
Presentation of the food is on the sloopy side and food quality is OK. For a tasting menu in the $150 to 200 range, you better go to a Michelin star restaurant. We have vegetarians and they can only churn out a grill vegetable dish, salad and cheese ravoli. Serive is slow even on a regular night and the busboy looks like a highschool intern with little to no training.
Just as good as before it changed hands. This is a local gem, and you will not regret going. My favorite "special occasion" restaurant!
Everything was spectacular. My husband & I were celebrating out 12th anniversary. Highly recommend the Grand Marnier Soufflé
Now under new ownership, still feels and tastes the same if not better. Love this place and happy that it continues its traditions and menues
As a "French" restaurant, we expected expensive high quality food. But this dinner surprised us in a few ways: many dishes were not classic but variations on familiar dishes. In every case the innovative aspects were disappointing. They offer a Caesar salad that disappointed two of our party badly. Although we sent these back, we were still charged for them. The seared tuna was excellent t as was the beef steak. Everything else was mediocre or disappointing in some way. For example, the sauces on the duck foie gras and the elk were too strong and overpowered the excellent meats. The grand mariner soufflé was served renverse, dumped upside down in a bowl of soupy sauce. Novel but not as good imho as a traditional souffle. All in all we had a pleasant, expensive evening with food that should've been much better.
Top notch. 1st time dining there. Will repeat. What more can you ask for?
Excellent as always since the early 80's
Excellent service, great food. Wines were expensive.
The food here is phenomenal, needless to say, with more on the menu since they reopened. What I like about La Foret is their ala Carte menu, unlike other fine restaurants which serve pre-fixe menu.
I loved my Birthday dinner at La Foret. The drive out and the setting made me feel like I was on a mini-vacation. The steak tar tar was flavorful, although you may want to ask them to hold the crispy onions if you are not an onion fan. The salads were fresh and light. But the key was our entrees. My lobster and my boyfriend's lamb were cooked to perfection.
Also, the service was impeccable. Ahmed is a great waiter.
La Foret- A little old school in terms of the menu and the setting - but, I think that's a lot of the charm.
It was the best dining experience. Everything is the best.
2 of the 3 entrees we order were terrible and the 3rd was midocre. Desert was sub par as well. Managed to mess up creme brûlée as well. How do you do that?
La Foret is a classic for special occasions. It is pricey, not a restaurant to go very often. The food was perfect. This time the noise level was higher than usual, but it is not the restaurant's fault. Unfortunately, at the table next to us, was a gentleman that talked at the top of his lungs and interfered with the quiet conversations we are used to. My wife and me celebrated our anniversary and were very nicely treated by the staff.
