La Fondue - Saratoga Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I as well as friends have loved this restaurant for years. We moved out of the Bay Area therefore are no longer frequent customers. This is a great place to enjoy great food and drinks with good friends. Anytime we have a chance to come back we do.
My husband and I are big fans of La Fondue. We go every year for our anniversary. Unfortunately, our 12-20-17 visit with my parents was a near-failure.
First, the music was very loud. When I made the reservation and upon arriving at the restaurant, I asked for a warm, quiet table. They followed through on "warm," but all four of us had to shout over the loud music.
Second, it was so dark that we couldn't see the menus. Even using two flashlights, we couldn't see the menu, and we had to order essentially from memory. Once the meat platters arrived, it was so dark that we couldn't distinguish among the meats. (We've never had a problem before.)
Third, the space and table was crowded. We had dined at the restaurant with another couple before without any problem, but we had to keep moving things around on the table to accommodate the plate(s) of dippers, the rescue spoon, etc.
Finally, our primary server seemed unfriendly. I asked him to give his explanations slowly, because my parents had never been to the restaurant before. He gave the explanation very quickly and with very little detail. (For instance, we had to explain that you don't eat directly from the meat fondue fork. Instead, you should remove the meat from the fondue fork and eat it with the regular fork.) Our primary server (whose name I can't recall) was awkward and slow when preparing the fondues at our table. I think I forgive a learning curve (everyone has to start somewhere!), but he did not show an ounce of friendliness or helpfulness. All of our assistant servers ranged from fine to great.
It's true that, even under the best of circumstances, bringing my parents (in their late 70's) to a fondue restaurant for the first time may not have been a great idea. It may have been too much of an adventure for them. Still, they were good sports and complimented the tasty food. But the noise, the very dark environment, and the unhelpful server meant we had a bad experience, overall.
The Punsch cooking method was awful. Instead of putting the herbs into a cheese cloth for flavor, they were loose. This meant that every bite you took had a tree of rosemary or a whole clove in it. Spent more time spitting out pieces of rosemary and cloves then actually enjoying the meal.
My wife and I ate there the day after Christmas as part of our celebrations because I worked Christmas Eve. The food and service were incredible! Even though we were there using a groupon which saved us hundreds off the meal we were treated just as well as full price paying customers. Our meal cost 155 with Groupon without it was 403 dollars. Huge savings ! Wait staff were so friendly and professional and personable. We can’t wait to come back again. We have our 4 year wedding anniversary in February:) perfect place to have that dinner.

$85 each is a bit steep for a prix fixe menu. We were advised beforehand of alternative choices, but, found out afterwards that we were given the default choices without being offered the alternative choices. Our waitress dismissed me when I inquired about why we weren’t offered the alternative choices. She was a good waitress but, I wasn’t happy with how she handled our questions about the alternative choices for the cheese and chocolate fondues. I shouldn’t have given her a 20% tip for that reason.
Our server kept forgetting to bring our drinks and we had to ask him several times for our wine bottle and champagne. When we asked for extra of the dipping snacks they came very late. At end of it all I gave the tip I think he deserved. He then comes up to me as I was leaving in front of all my guest I brought to dinner and tells me if anything was wrong. I guess he didn’t like the TIP. And pretty much forced me to give him more. I only increased my tip because I was embarrassed he asked in-front if my guest. Never coming back! I get servers main income is through tips. But I didn’t feel he earned my money. For the price of the restaurant I have descent expectations that he did not meet! I hope someone calls me in this (510-996-2624) but I’m not holding my breath.
The cheese fondue was delicious, as was the desert chocolate fondue. The meats and seafood that we grilled our selves was marginal at best. Lots of work to cook little pieces of protein took well over an hour alone. The expensive bottle of wine was brought to the table rather warm and it tasted "off." We asked the waiter to taste it, which he had to do "in the back" and he thought it was fine. It was not and they did not offer to replace it. The meal was very expensive and the service was below acceptable for the price range and expectations. It's a fun place but I would not return soon.
It’s really hard for to except change!!!! I’ve been going for 20 plus years and probably would say this is my last!!! New ownership means new ways doing business. For the price I would say it’s not worth it anymore. Thank you for the great years and best of luck
We went to La Fondue with our 9 and 11 year old children to celebrate a birthday. Both kids loved it and asked to go back again. Staff was very friendly. They offered to box up a salad that one child did not want to eat and let us know that we could order 3 portions of the fondues for 4 people so we wouldn't have too much food. Fondue and grilled meats were excellent quality and make sure to save space for chocolate fondue!
La Fondue has gone downhill. So very sad!!!! My husband and I have frequented this restaurant many times over the last 7 years. The service has gotten terrible and the portions have become a lot smaller. We will not be returning which is such a bummer! This restaurant has been so special to us.
Went with the missus for a date night. It is a real nice romantic restaurant. The service is impeccable. A simple menu of salads, choice of entree meats, cheese fondue options and finally chocolate fondue options. Everything was perfect.
Quite a bit pricey, but certainly worth it for the great time we had.
We were a party of 4, spent about 268$ that evening. You should be cautious about how you pick the items as they add up fast. Probably your best bang for the buck is 108$ Fondue feast that serves 2 people, and you can choose up to 6 items from the menu and that comes also with a cheese fondue, salad, and dessert. The food is delicious! The ambiance is nice, but I have to be frank, paying over a 200$ bill, almost 300$, you're not getting great service. It felt our server was scattered, and overwhelmed, and barely checked on us, actually no she and he didn't! I had to flag them down all the time for extra bread, drinks, and also to check on our dessert, the dessert (chocolate fondue) had a delay, around 20 mins. When presented with the bill, they accidentally gave us the wrong check for 98$, then they corrected it, but overall terrible slow service. It was my 4th time here, but I sadly think my last. I came over 10 years ago when the place was superb and service totally up to par, I think the service is what is going to make you lose some of your best customer's, I would only return if La Fondue took my comments into consideration and offered me some incentive to return and also an apology. The overall feeling was kind of feeling neglected. My boy's turned 15 and it was their bday celebration.
If there’s four of you, do the groupon and come hungry. It’s a TON of food. You get to pick two cheese sauces and two chocolate sauces and get two of every meat item on the menu....from antelope to venison (but don’t worry, you’ll still get staples like turkey, chicken, and beef).
But seriously, come hungry and don’t fill up on the salad or bread with the cheese sauces!!! Or you won’t have room for the meat and chocolate courses.
La Fondue is a gem in Saratoga. For those who want to get away for the evening and enjoy cheese fondue in one of the various themed rooms and also perhaps dabble in some surf and turf or other exotic meats (not kidding) this is the place to go
The service from Rod was fantastic and he ensured that we were attended to promptly and made sure that we were never without some portion of food in front of us. Even with the restaurant being relatively crowded he was able to check in on us to make sure that we were happy!
Adam the manager came up to us at the beginning of our dinner and explained the menu process (which can be quite confusing if you’ve never been there before)
Great experience, delightful service and a fantastic dinner!!
