La Fonderie Montreal Ratings and Reviews
This place has been around for a ling time, fantastic mom and pop shop. No frills. Like a lot of mom and pops, service is a bit slow, but the authenticity is there and is palpable. They enjoy what they do. Excellent fondue in a refreshingly down-to-earth atmosphere.
The food was in no way special, very ordinary, even if it was said to be "homemade", there was no vegetables with the meat and only a few fruits for the chocolate fondue. The restaurant itself looks old and feels like a boring countryside small restaurant... Don't go there for a nice romantic evening! The waitress charged us extras for many things without telling us. Overall, let's say it would have been better to eat a fondue at our home and we will not go back there.
We arrived for our reservation quite late as we were having a hard time finding parking. The Opentable site states that this restaurant has valet parking. I called and they said that they do not and told us to park in the local park along Caxilla Lavallee Avenue where there is plenty of parking.
We were traveling with my 7 mos old grandson who decided that he was not happy with being at the restaurant. After being seated, we asked to be moved to the empty dining room so that my daughter would not be so stressed as to not enjoy our meal. The staff was extremely accommodating! We were afraid that service might be slow since we were the only people in this room and realized it would be easy to forget us. We were not and the service was remarkably prompt and friendly.
I ordered the sampler plate that had shrimp, salmon, chicken and beef to be cooked in a simmering broth fondue pot set on the table. My daughter had the cheese fondue and both men ordered the wild game fondue. We all agreed that the food was very good and plentiful. Very tasty and interesting selections.
If you are in the mood for a good fondue, this is the place. Let's start with the staff - warm and friendly; attentive but not overly so. Nice wines - not too expensive and very good.
I have been to the restaurant 2 times -- both times the salad and the onion soup were very good. Very fresh salad and the onion soup is very tasty and not overly salted. We shared the Swiss fondue both times -- wonderful!! And just the right amount. We ended dinner both times with the chocolate fondue with strawberries -- Winner!!
Overall -- nice, simple, good and fun -- perfect Friday place!
We were visiting from the USA, and looking for a fondue restaurant. This was exactly what we wanted. Great people on staff, great ambiance, and great food. We ordered the feast, which was a nice mix of fondue and salad for a complete meal. Reasonable pricing. They helped us to get a taxi back to our hotel. Thanks for a great dining experience.
Me and my husband came in, nobody was there we waited 5mins for someone to show up . We took a table then 2 of the waitess friend i guess came in and then she started talking with them for a long 15min which she didnt took our order yet... Had to call her so she stop talking. The garlic bread was basicaly burn. The choice of dressing is nasty. I would never go back there the waitress was a wayyy to rude and only give good servicw to the people she kno i guess !
Waiter was very rude - explain us that we HAVE to give a mandatory tips. I give a tips when I am satisfy of everything ! Customer is king not the waiter ... especially when we pay 26$ for 4 slices of raclettes and 1 potatoe without any "charcuterie" like every fondue restaurant...
At first glance I was concerned that this restaurant would be a disappointment given the rundown neighborhood. However once we entered, we were surrounded by a warmth, both in the choice of colors & the service. We had swiss fondu w/ traditional cheeses & chinese one. Both were delicious and the portions were ample. Later I realized there was a second dining room that was more updated but I preferred our room since it was cozier. When I left, I looked at the street w/ fresh eyes & realized that all of the blocks around La Fonderie had been renovated which was why I was so comfortable walking to the restaurant. That's good since after trying at least 4 other fondue restaurants, we had finally found one that we would happily return to.
Perfect for a cold winter night. We went for Valentine's dinner so it was a set menu. Tasty cheese fondue, good selection of meats, and good chocolate fondue.
The resto could use a makeover as there's not much ambiance.
Waitress was very friendly and attentive.
Nice touch was a long stemmed rose on every table.
Presentation of food could use some work but overall the food tasted very good.
The place is quite charming, not too fancy but not plain either. The food was deliciously prepared and the portions were good. It was a Saturday night so the restaurant was quite busy yet still quiet enough to have good conversation without shouting. This is exactly what you would want when going for fondue. The wait staff was excellent and even suggested a different plate to us which comes with the same portions we asked for but at a cheaper price. All 3 of our fondues (cheese, Chinese, chocolate) were fantastic. I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a nice night out with a lengthy fondue dinner.
We were visiting Montreal and our 15yo daughter found this charming neighborhood restaurant in the Mount Royal district. The waiter was beyond helpful in explaining the choices, he seemed to really enjoy his job. The fondue "feast" was more than enough for our group and we all agreed this was a gem of a place. As it was July we would have loved an outdoor dining area but we can understand that fondue in the middle of a Montreal winter must be a great event!
