Celebrating a birthday. Music was great and restaurant was beautiful.
Lackluster food from restaurant week menu.
Though I might give it another chance and come back for paella for a dinner.
I went with a friend for New Restaurant Week lunch. I had mushroom rice croquettes (ok); arroz con pollo (dry); peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream (cobbler not fruity and dry). The server was pleasant and the decor is appealing. Unfortunately the food does not measure up.
We enjoyed the food (restaurant week) and the ambience. Service was excellent.
Restaurant Week menu had some variety. I tried one of their noon alcoholic "refrescos" - orange lime, very tasty. We each had the tomato and watermelon salad appetizer. We had softshell crab with chipotle aioli and cod with spinach, plantain, and mango salsa, both very good. We had peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream and a coconut pineapple tart for dessert with French press coffee, also good. The service was very good and the seating in the back of the restaurant was pleasant and calmer, away from the street noise. The only disappointment was the bread, served one roll at a time with tongs, cold and tough instead of warm and soft.
Restaurant week. Appetizers great, main entree good. Dessert was so so.
Great 👍 good and wines
La Fonda treated us Royally for my Birthday 🎉
Our waiter got us out of there quickly, as we requested.
But it did take a while for us to be approached after we sat. It took a while for water to be filled and for us to be given the menus.
The restaurant week lunch menu was very good and enjoyable.
Staff were friendly. Appropriate portion for restaurant week.
Three of the four people in our party ordered off of the restaurant week lunch menu and we were all underwhelmed.
I've been eating here for years. It's a great spot for a quiet business lunch. And the location is great. However, I am always slightly disappointed with the menu. I think the lunch menu is fine, and the food is good. But I can't help but feel that it could be so much better. Maybe I'm biased because I just returned from Spain, and ate real Spanish food for a week. To then come to a Spanish restaurant in NYC to eat an ordinary salmon burger is a little disappointing.
Lunch special is a real value
It would have gotten a higher rating if 1) the kitchen was better about allergy awareness. We told the waiter that one of the diners was allergic to bell peppers. Despite this, 2 dishes came out with bell peppers with no warning when we requested they be removed from the dish. 2) the maitre'd didn't tell us that the upstairs portion of the restaurant had a totally different menu!
The food was amazing. Staff was very nice and professional.
I like the way the tacos are served, the fillings are separate. The waiters and host are very friendly and do not rush the service
Love this spot, not only is it a few steps from major modes of NY transportation the food selection is fantastic! and the vibe totally cool.
This was our first time to La Fonda del Sol, and it will NOT be our last. The service was wonderful, with perfect timing by our amazing server Sonya. She quickly answered any questions we had and guided us through the menu. I can't say enough good things about her. Her attention to detail was spot on. And the food, ah, the food. The tapas made me feel as if I was back in Barcelona. The pork chop was the most succulent I've ever had. I'm so glad we finally decided to stop into this wonderful restaurant. I've already decided this is where I want to go on my next birthday! Bravo La Fonda del Sol!
Good location. Hostess was very accommodating when we arrived Early for our reservation. Gave us a table right away and then moved us outside when we asked. Prices seemed fine but TINY portions. Had to easy dessert to get full
The main dining room area was not crowded or noisy, thus good for a long conversation or a business meeting. The food was good but a bit below my expectations. The pepper stuffed with crabmeat appetizer was delicious. However the branzino in tomato stew main dish was just ok.
Back room is perfect for a biz dinner
Good for a quick bite, tapas and a glas of wine before heading home.
On a Monday evening had the 2nd floor practically to ourselves. Superb service, with nice pacing in between courses. Delicious dishes with impressive variety.
Good for work lunch, food is nice, wouldn't come here for atmosphere
First time. Staying at Bryant Park for long weekend, looked for tapas nearby on Open table, yelp and trip advisor. Reviews generally good but with some exceptions. Found everything quite good, better than expected, don't understand any poor reviews.
Shared tapas of garlic shrimp, Spanish ham and a salad, followed by entre size crab cakes for each of us. Tapas were very nice and crab cakes exceptional. Very light and fresh tasting, heavy on lump crab and very little filler, not deep fried or heavily oiled/buttered, very fresh. Good service, nice drinks.
Found it pleasantly quiet and were able to have a normal level conversation but we were seated in the upper, dinner area, seemed quite a bit louder in the level below near the bar. So for special occasion or date be sure to be seated in upper level.
Will return in the future.
The food, service and atmosphere
was 5 star all the way!
Very authentic Spanish tapas cuisine, plus a full regular menu. Top quality food ingredients and as a result the dishes are really tasty. Very attentive service. A great experience!
Great experience! Our waiter Ben was the best - he really made the evening. Hope management realizes what a gem he is!
We chose the prix fixe menu which had some very nice options. My wife had the swordfish which was excellent. I had the pork loin which was tender and tasty. Our server had too many tables to watch to be able to provide excellent service but he worked hard to provide very good service. Oh, I found the portion size of the prix fixe was just right for a typical appetite.
The service was spot on and the food was delicious. We ordered small plates and they were fabulous. The dining room was chic and elegant. I would avoid the lower level bar which felt more like a si goes spot but the dining room is sublime!!
Was very disappointed in food which we all found very ordinary and certainly did not justify the relatively high prices. Our friend from South America said it was kind of phony Spanish style. The wait staff was very nice when we finally had to call over a server to take our order. They were quite solicitous but the front of the house seemed understaffed. When we left there was no one at the entrance and I had to go in the coat check closet to retrieve my coat.
Flavorful and good choices for the carnivores and vegetarians alike. Nice ambience and location in midtown is great.
Wonderful meal with excellent service. Very convenient to Grand Central. Amazing menu selections.
It was a terrific meal on a terrific day with friendly staff. Perhaps there could have been a few more wait staff on because getting our food took a bit too long but other than that, I have nothing negative to write.
Was my first visit. Was recommended by a friend. A Spanish flare. Food and service was wonderful. Staff so attentive. Didn't like the first glass of wine I ordered , so they quickly offered me two alternatives- " no problem sir." The presentation of the dishes was also eye catching and different. We had a lovely, non-rushed meal.
Perfect spot for a business lunch. Service was couteous and the food very good. Lunch menu is a great value.
This is the place to go for a business lunch near grand central station. The food is always tasty and well prepared. The service is excellent and it's not too noisy. One can actually talk.
Convenient location. Food good and the upstairs dining room offers cosy quiet conversation. We had a nice selection of tapas.
La Fonda del Sol is a very good restaurant with high quality food and outstanding service. I was there for the first time about three weeks ago and came back a week later. The first time was for a special business celebration (colleague leaving to start a new job).
I had the crab cakes to start and the scallops for my entree. The crab cakes are the best I have had in a very long time, with really nice large chunks of crab meat. The scallops were perfectly seared. Unfortunately, the seasoning was off and I found them extremely salty. Perhaps it was a slightly heavy hand in the kitchen that day.
I loved the crab cakes so much that I came back a week later to have that as an entree. On the second visit, I tried the grilled octopus to start and that dish was delicious. I plan on coming back for dinner someday so I can try the wines, from which there is a beautifully large selection to choose.
The service was excellent on both visits. The ambiance is one of the things I love most about this restaurant. The upstairs level is refined and high end with spacious seating. Overall, it's a great restaurant that I highly recommend.
Always a special treat to dine at La Fonda Del Sol. Easy pre-theatre dinner and also conveniently located by Grand Central Station
Had the prix fixe lunch and the choices were great. The substitute chowder appetizer was billed as lobster chowder but looked and tasted like sweet potato chowder. It was good but I didn't notice any lobster. The main courses were delicious, as were the bunuelos to finish up. Bunuelos with a hot cup of French press coffee should be the way to end every meal!
