Designed by world-renowned architect Adam D. Tihany, La Fonda del Sol's split-level space consists of a striking tapas lounge/bar on the ground floor and an elegant dining room on the upper level.
View Private Dining DetailsFonda Del Sol is a midtown gem. There is definitely a commuter crowd in the bar but if you stay later it is lively without being overwhelming. The dining room in the back is great for a quieter meal. Great food and drinks!
If you go, tapas is your best bet. Food in dining room is uneven. Grilled Atlantic Salmon at lunch very good. Chorizo and Egg appetizer hardly contained any chorizo -was full of potatoes but just crumbs of chorizo- very deceiving and way over priced. Rare Tuna in salad was dry and didn’t seem fresh.Service is pleasant but kitchen is slow.
Great food, warm ambiance and efficient service (thank you Ana) makes for a great dining experience...
Always a great meal with impeccable service.
Fabulous food! Great service! Had a lovely diner night experience. Would definitely go back again.
Probably one of the best in the area, plenty and ample room, quiet, relax, and easy to have business conversation, while enjoying good food and fish. You see they have prepared the food as you order, not pre-cooked like most places in the area.
Wait person disappeared after the dinner was served. We had to call her over to clear the plates a while after we had fun bushes. The restaurant was not busy at the time.
Went here on a date. Service was very good. Drinks were great.
Food was good, but there was no dish that I would crave, recommend getting, or go back for. The biggest deterrent is the price. We got 6 super small apps and drinks for $200 plus tip. At over $100 per person, I can think of several better ways to spend your money.
Here is what we ate and I am listing them in order from favorite to least favorite.
Octopus - Very good. Would order again.
Patatas Bravas - Perfectly cooked home fries. I would order again, but pretty expensive potatoes.
Mahi Mahi Taco - Better than the Chicken Taco, nothing memorable.
Crabmeat Stuffed Piquillo Peppers - Tasty but came with 2 peppers about the size of a quarter. save your money.
Chicken Taco - Don't waste your money
Shrimp Ceviche - Would not order again.
The Valentine’s Day selection of food was amazing. Great service from our server. Ambiance was incredible. Definitely recommending to all my friends and family. I will definitely be back.
Excellent thoughtful service, delicious food and quiet with sufficient room between tables.
Squeezed in a weekday lunch with friends. The food was just ok, and greasier/mushier than I like. Part of our order didn't arrive until we asked for it (it was on the check though, so they remembered that part). Someone dropped sauce on one of our jackets and then just dropped off some napkins without checking to see if that stained. Overall a convenient and clean happy hour location (probably), but not worth revisiting otherwise.
Amazing! Great service and food.
My Colleague and I had a business meal there during restaurant week on Feb. 9th. It was my first time dining there. The atmosphere was trendy yet elegant and it is very comfortable place. Jack was our waitperson. He was extremely helpful with our menu choices. I am not a steak person but had the Hanger Steak Churrasco. It was DELICIOSO!!! Cooked to perfection. Serving size was perfect. I really really enjoyed this place and will definitely return with friends in tow.
The Hostess(s) were also very inviting and very pleasant. KUDOS to LA FONDA DEL SOL
I have been to La Fonda Del Sol many times. Usually the food is very good. Service is average at best.
On this occasion the food was not good at all, perhaps a different chef?
Service unfortunately remained unchanged.
Food came out too quickly and at room temperature. Maybe an off night as it was Monday night.
The architect for this restaurant was brilliant! The proportions and layouts of the different dining areas makes for an energizing and welcoming atmosphere. The colors are welcoming but not garish. The glass “windows” are doors that can open on to a patio in warm weather. An altogether flexible space that I bet they really aren’t fully taking advantage of. (Example: they could easily clear away part of the front dining area for dancing, musicians or movies.)
Oh yes, and the food was excellent.
I’ll be back sometime for dinner and to sample their evening atmosphere. :)
Disappointing experience topped off with being overcharged. Went on Jan 30 for restaurant week. Place is tastefully designed. Server while polite needs more training. Food was not spectacular. When I asked the waiter what is in the Valencia rice (I don't eat pork or shellfish) His response was:what it says on the menu. Since I know how to read I was more than annoyed. I had to tell him that there was no description and he said it's rice. No S*it. Then he said it's plain Spanish rice. The rice actually comes with peas and carrots. He was not knowledgeable about the menu and was unable to make any reccomendations. I ordered the fava beans which were supposed to have lemon and mint. While the texture of the beans were good it probably would have been great if the were lemon and mint were included. The chimichurri appetizer could have been better had there been ample chimichurri. The ropa vieja and chicken entree were good. Not good enough to warrant another visit but they were good. As the restaurant was closing the servers were not subtle about wanting to leave. Plates collected before fork hit the table, lights dimmed music was turned off....that sort of thing. It was a party of 4 and 3 paid by card 1 in cash. Checking the card statement the next day he double charged 1 person!!!! I guess that way he could keep the cash. Of course the charge will be disputed and I will never patronize this establishment nor will I recommend it.
My friend and I met for lunch, we both went by restaurant week menu and picked salmon as entree, they were cooked just right, and the grilled clams that came with it were also done just right. For dessert, mango tres leche cake was to die for. Service was superb. Very friendly and accommodating waiting staff who served with smile that light up our day. My friend is very particular on the importance to have good service, and she gave the waiting staff high remarks for their wonderful service. While we were sitting there, she was already making list of people that she wants to bring to dine in this restaurant.
My time at the restaurant was really nice, even though I came by myself during the lunch hour, the hostess sat me in the formal dining area, as opposed to the more open casual area (which was considerate of her). The wait staff was polite and answered my questions about the food and gave suggestions when asked. They did sadly run out of a main ingredient in the entree I ordered but they made up for it by comping my drink which I found to be also kind and conscientious of them. The food was great and full of flavor, in no need of extra salt (& that means Alot coming from a salt fiend such as I am) and good portion size.
Food was good, and also the cocktails, just a little bit pricey for what we ate
La Fonda Del Sol is a great spot adjacent to Grand Central Station.
The food is fresh, creative and tasty, while the environment is hospitable and friendly.
And Sonia always makes you feel special!
A neighborhood find!

I invited 6 friends for lunch and everyone was very impressed with both the food and the service. I had the cod, and it was beautifully prepared and presented. In fact, I’ve never had a better cod entree. The service was excellent.
Have had lunch here several times and the food never fails to deliver. The menu is a perfect balance between courses, with many - but not too many - options to choose from. The prix fixe option is also attractive. It's not cheap but worth it.
Great overall but salmon was over cooked even though the waiter went out of his way to tell me how the cook recommends it medium rare.
The reservation was made quite some time ago and the day before we got an email reminding us of the reservation. Then on the day of the reservation , which was for 5pm, we received an email at 11:30am telling us that the restaurant was going to close at 3:30pm and therefore we would not be able to dine there. Rather unpleasant experience.
All good. Been here Many times and always enjoy the food. You can have a conversation with your guests too.
In general, the food here is very good. One of us thought the pork chop wasn't flavorful, but another of our party loved the pork chop. The scallops were nicely done, still moist in the middle and very flavorful. As starters, we had the chorizo and eggs and the beet salad. Both were excellent. The wine selection has a nice selection with price points to meet every budget, but we opted for a pitcher of red sangria which was very nice. If you're looking for a restaurant convenient to Grand Central Station, you can't do much better than this.
It had been about a year since my last visit and was not disappointed. The service was great!!! Our waiter was very attentive and accommodating. Will definitely be coming back.
Great place for a nice business lunch - very good food, service and quiet! The tapas bar is very nice for an after-work drink with colleagues.
Great quick meal before catching the train so close to Grand Central trains
Perfect for a quiet business lunch. bbbbbbbbbbbbbb
When you sit, you are at peace; after your appetizer, you are in love, your main course is ecstasy and after desert you are in heaven.
Food is good. Server told us Paella would take 30 minutes. An hour later it finally arrived.
I have been coming here for years. Like the new menu. Hostess was extremely rude...it was a nice night and my friend and I wanted to sit outside. She reprimanded me for making a reservation since they were holding a table for us.
All four of us took advantage of the prix fixe lunch which was a remarkable value at $35.00 for three terrific courses. Beet salads and empanadas were a great starter and all four mains superb . The veggie paella was outstanding as was the cod. Terrific wine list a great desserts too. A real bargain in midtown east and with way above average food.
The ambiance of the dining room was great - very peaceful and easy to have a conversation. Our table overlooking the bar was a nice added touch. The food was delicious and the service was very good.
Excellent. Loved the paella. One of the best I've ever had
Chosen for its convenience to Grand Central and hoping for a quick, but good meal. Liked the sound of a tapas lounge. Decided to eat in the lounge/bar area vs. the restaurant. Might have been our mistake. Despite the lounge being 80 percent empty our meal took 1 hour and 45 minutes. We ordered two small and one large plate. At a tapas restaurant food is supposed to come out when it is ready. Instead they waited for the large plate to finish, so it was hot out of the oven and the small plates were tepid, barely warm. Large chicken dish was very good. Small octopus plate had too many competing strong flavors, over-seasoned. Cold meatballs were swimming in a bowl of bland marinara sauce. Hardly worth the 40 minute wait from ordering to serving. Ended up taking a train home much, much later than desired. Had the meal been good I would not have minded. Considering the service was glacially slow and the food was meh, my companion and I were both quite annoyed. Would not go at 8 pm. Maybe the rush hour scene is more organized.
Bus staff slow on refiling water glasses. Table hiden by column.
Great dining experience!
Sonia takes wonderful care of us!!!!
