It was still open on Tuesday, August 29, 2017. Steaks were good, sole was very good, other items were hit and miss. Server was excellent, as were the house wines. Kid friendly.
This was our first visit and will definitely not be our last!
We visited La Folie on a Saturday at noontime, and everything was great, from our welcome at the door to the fantastic crème caramel dessert! Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable, and spontaneously offered samples of two different red wines so that I could decide whether I really wanted the house red (I did -- it was a nice Bordeaux that went well with the steak-frites, which was the reason we were there). We had the brie pastry puff appetizer, which was fabulous; and the salad and soup that come with the entrée were both perfect, and the steak-frites were everything we had hoped for! The only negative blip was when my companion ordered the chocolate mousse and got a house-made "candy bar" instead (apparently the mousse wasn't available), but our server apologized profusely for not mentioning the switch, and the "candy bar" was quite good. If you're craving really excellent food, La Folie is the place!
Always a great experience! Must try the steak frittes
We had a wonderful evening at La Folie! We assembled at the bar, and when we were all there, went to our reserved table. We took advantage of the Thursday night wine and cheese specials. Among our group, we had steak frites, mussels with sausage, trout special, beef bourguignon, and the French onion soup and squash soup. Everyone was delighted with all the food, wine, cheese, and beer. Street parking can be pretty full, but we found spaces about a block away next to the church.
We had an excellent time at La Folie. The service from our server, Kristin, and the hostess, Kay, was exceptional. Kristin gave great recommendations for the menu. The mushroom crisps and beef bourguignon were delicious. The creme brûlée is great to share for dessert. Can't wait to go back!
We are frequent diners at Blue Hill Tavern and when we heard the owners opened up a new restaurant, we knew we were going to have to give it a try and I'm glad we did. This restaurant occupies the space that used to be Tavern on the Square.
From the bowl of popcorn we were given when we sat down right through desserts, everything was very good.
The menu is very focused, but there are plenty of options.
Our server was a bit inexperienced, but he did a good job and made sure that we had a good time.
Parking can be a bit tough in that area and on the weekends, it is nearly impossible.
Recommend La Folie for a nice night out, especially if you are not into the loud bars and other establishments that are in Canton Square.
Great for dining with kids! Paper covered tables to draw on plus $9 three course kids menu that ends with ice cream. Popcorn on the table when you arrive. Dined with my parents, my husband, and our two kids and it was a wonderful evening out.
Their strength is definitely the service and their bar. Cocktails were very good, and our server was very friendly and attentive (but not too attentive). The food, however, was average. The sauce on my wife's portobello had a peculiar flavor and their steaks, while well cooked, are not fatty and not particularly good cuts of meat.
Three friends were there for Sunday Happy Hour and we were so pleased with the service and the food that we are looking forward to our next visit. Highly recommend.
Lovely place. Cozy inviting space with a fabulous bar. I noted the noise level only because of realky LOUD woman at bar with zero volume control. Could here her screechingvthruout entire restaurant and meal. To be fair they have lovely drinks and she was enjoyong tbem!! Lol
Absolute gem with well thought out reasonable wine list. Amazing French Onion Soup!
Steak and Frites? Yes please! Perfectly cooked and the frites were spot on.
My husband adored the escargot and mussels. A lovely spot with fabulous service.
Nightmarish parking ( shame they do not valet !) But worth driving around for a spot.
Go visit! You'll be glad you did!!
We will be back again and again!!
The food at La Folie was acceptable, but not remarkable. The ambiance was disturbed by the circumstance that it was St. Patrick's day, due to which there were plenty of people in the streets having their celebration, and this spilled over into La Folie.
The service was great and the food was wonderful, really nice french bistro in the Baltimore area
I've now been here about four times. The food is consistently wonderful - and the same applies to the staff. A very comfortable setting with a legit French menu. One of the few French places in Bmore and thankfully it's great. It probably illegal to say it's better than Cindy Wolfe's Petit Louis - but I think it actually is (and I love PLouis). I had their onion soup which was fantastic. Others had the baked brie - great too. For dinner I had the chicken frites - amazing sauce and dish. And our sever Shanti really made th night extra fun.
Great flavorful salmon and juicy steak frites. Frites were crispy. Squash soup was amazing and side salad also tasty and fresh. Brie puffs and macaroons were typical and decent.
Disappointing food, especially for a $$ "French" restaurant
Found this place via Yelp. As a Belgian in the States, I was immediately curious about the place since their menu and website was partly in french.
The menu options really stood out to me (especially for the price). We went on a Sunday night, it was quite. The service was wonderful and the food delicious. A perfect Sunday night out.
The staff was lovely. Cocktail was great. My partner had a better food experience than I did. I wanted to like it but felt the food lacked imagination. Not feeling the mushrooms with apple butter among other things.
Great cocktails to start. Service was attentive and friendly. All of our dishes were excellent and the frittes were spot on (it's in the name!)
We love La Folie. It has been a perfect addition to the eating/drinking selections in Canton. Nancy is a wonderful server/bartender/person. We particularly like that the noise level is reasonable and we can actually have a dinner conversation. It is a cozy, warm, inviting place. While the food selection is limited and many dishes have a lot of butter, it is all very good specially the squash soup, highly recommend.
Excellent Meal! Great steaks and fresh fish cooked perfectly and all delicious.
Good food, terrible pop music mix playing throughout dinner
Went on a Tuesday night for our first visit. Food was very good; salmon was cooked perfectly and the Steak Colette was excellent. Everyone really enjoyed the squash soup. La Folie is a great addition to the area dining choices.
If you are dining out for a relaxed, quiet, personal conversation with someone special, look elsewhere- if you are under 30, have good hearing, like quality French food , and just want to go there to eat, and are a conversational shouter, this is your place. People nice-food and service very good, and you get the rock concert.
OUTSTANDING! We've done the burger and the steak frites about 3x each. I like to combine the burger with the steak frites sauce. No brainer one of the best French onion soups in the city. I also would contend that their carafe of wine is one of the best wine deals in the city. On a Sunday night I don't want to split a whole bottle, so we just get the carafe and call it a night.
Christmas lunch with my friend. Both wanted to try this because it was French. We ended up just getting a hamburger, not really French but not a lot of choices. I got the turkey burger which was pretty bad. Frites were ok, had better.
Nice waitress and the place looks good. Pretty empty for a Friday lunch tho. I wish them lunch .
La Folie has standard bistro fare. The food was good but not amazing. However, it was incredibly kid friendly with a special 3-course kids menu, crayons for drawing all over the paper table tops, etc. It was quiet the day we were there but it was pretty empty (early on a weeknight) so not sure what the noise level would be if more crowded.
Very good steak frites! We will come back for sure
There were very few diners there on the Wednesday night that we went, so it was quiet and we had a nice time. We chose a wine suggested by our waiter which was very good. Several of us got the cheese platter appetizer which they said was very good. Two of us got the trout special which was fair at best. There was too much oil or whatever it was cooked in on the plate and it had a sharp taste that I did not like. The fish was very nicely cooked though and the green beans served with it were excellent. The two of us who got fish split an order of the frites and they were very good, but personally, I did not think they were anything extraordinary. Our two other diners go the double burger and frites and said they were excellent. So overall a mixed review. I do not go out that often and love to get fish, so I was disappointed. I would not go back, but maybe my friends who got the burgers would....
Everyone was so friendly from the moment we walked in the door. The popcorn was a hit and everything we tried was amazing. I highly recommend the Steak Frites.
Excellent service and great meal.
It's advertised as a steak frites bistro and that was very good. The steaks was prepared sous vides to our medium rare specification and finished on the grill. Tender meat and great frites. Our starter was a country pate that was like a slab of meatloaf in size (share it). Very nice texture with a sprinkle of coarse sea salt. Creme brulee was also marvelous and enough to share. The wine list is short but very serviceable. Excellent French press coffee.
Fabulous spot! Great wine! Best salmon ever! Very attentive wait staff! Can't wait to go back and bring friends! Terrific evening!
Celebrated our wedding anniversary at La Folie and all the reviews we're true! Excellent menu/wine list and ambience at this local French bistro. Wonderful service from all staff and met the enthusiastic and welcoming owner Bill Irvin. While menu is simple (ala any true French Bistro) the specials were creative as are the drinks and a very dynamic French wine list with many wines to try and learn about. Very enjoyable evening to celebrate!!
Truly fits the category "neighborhood gem." It's great to have a wonderful little French bistro in the city. The food is terrific and the staff is warm, knowledgeable and fun...they add to the evening. I strongly recommend!
Simple, straight forward bistro ambience. Basic French food that needs a push upwards. The onion soup was nice but bland; the portobello dish was good but not savory as it should be; the special steak had to be sent back for various reasons; and then a truly fantastic trout meniure almondine. We will go back but please, management, take a second look at the production of consistent food -- especially with a micro menu.
Fantastic!! The service, food, and ambiance were all excellent! Reminiscent of a bistro in Paris!
The atmosphere was wonderful but for the price, we felt our portion sizes were way too small. For the price, we expected double the protein of what we received.
We've eaten here twice now, and it has been great both times. Food is spot on, and the menu is well honed and not at all overwhelming.
The onion soup is amazing and not too salty, and the steak is perfectly prepared. The mussels are also sweet and tender.
I have to say, I'm not a huge fan of the Frose drink, but many people seem to like it.
Great place for a date, everyday meal, or to bring kids on the earlier side of evening (amazing kids menu).
