About La Folie

La Folie is a French restaurant located in Russian Hill of San Francisco. Chef Roland Passot, with his wife Jamie opened La Folie in March of 1988. He combines the freshest ingredients in exotic combinations. Each plate leaves the kitchen resembling art-a canvas of color and design that tastes even better than it looks. La Folie continues to be rated as one of the top restaurants, one of the first bay area restaurants to receive a star from the Michelin Guide, 4 stars from the San Francisco Chronicle and 4 stars from San Francisco Magazine. In celebration of 21 years, The Passots have expanded their bar into a lounge located next door, perfect for before or after dinner drinks.

Easily one of the best meals I've ever had. In any city.

Every part of the experience was excellent from booking the reservation thru dinner. The dining room is very attractive. Service was the perfect mix of knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. Pacing was perfect. Dinner itself was phenomenal. It's not inexpensive but at no point did I feel the experience didn't justify the tab. I though chef Roland stopping by the table to see how we enjoyed dinner was a nice touch. Hats off to him and his staff... for a restaurant that's been in business for so long, they clearly don't rest on their reputation. Just a great experience in every way.

La Folie the restaurant is incredible. We have been there twice, coming from out of town, both for wedding anniversaries, and although a little pricey, it remains our absolutely finest favorite dining destination. The service is altogether excellent, the chef/owner welcoming and friendly, the wine list is fantastic, and the cuisine is incredible. This time, we discovered they have a beautiful lounge next door. We will go back again.

Excellent food exquisitely presented. Go for the tasting meal and indulge in an amazing journey. You will not be disappointed. So why the 3 stars (good) overall? We had a reservation for 8:45p and were not seated until 9:25p. Given the restaurant requires a credit card to secure a reservation with a strict cancellation policy, we didn't feel we had the option to leave after waiting a half hour which I think is more than generous. The next day I was talkint with a friend who had his birthday dinner there and he waited an hour for his table. So, I would recommend calling ahead when you have a reservation and seeing if they are runnning on schedule-- save yourself some trouble. The food is outstanding so wish this didn't start the way it did.

The seared foie gras was amazing. The portion is generous. The wine selection is also affordable. We finished up with baked Alaska as my dessert, that was too pretty to eat and melt in your mouth.

Absolutely perfect. The food was incredible and the chef made his way to the table to make sure everything was perfect. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect meal. Truly one of the most memorable meals of my life. Every single dish was plated impeccably and cooked to perfection. I have told everyone I know about this special restaurant and I will be making a trip back to San Francisco just to go back and dine once again and try some of the other dishes I didn't get to have. The chefs take on foie gras is a dish I felt after tasting should be on everyone's bucket list if they only knew how special it was. Everything was so creative in an absolutely refined and tasteful way. I wish there were more restaurants and chefs that treated guests the way this restaurant treats its guests. I always felt from the moment i made the reservation the restaurant truly cared to make my evening special and at every opportunity took the initiative to ask if there was anything they could do to make the evening more special than it already was by eating such incredibly prepared food. I was also very pleasantly surprised that we were able to tip , on the bill, the rest of the staff at the restaurant in addition to the waiter. I have learned a lot from just dining in this restaurant on how to run my own business and how to be so considerate to every customer as well as my staff. This is a very special place that clearly is run by people who love what they do and love their guests. I almost feel mistreated now whenever I eat anywhere else because of how well I was treated as soon as I was first contacted by the restaurant to the last goodbye and offer to call me a cab as I walked out.

Overall it was good. They had flowers set up as I requested which made it very special. The only reason I deduct points is I confirmed on the phone to be seated in the back room and i was seated in the front. I did not say anything because I didn't realize which room was what until I got up and went to the bathroom since it was my first time here. It's disappointing for a high caliber restaurant to mess that up.

Wow! La Folie does not disappoint - it is always a memorable meal! The meal and service were outstanding. We ate there a few months ago but returned to celebrate a special occasion. They are extremely flexible, allowing you to select nearly anything on the menu (including items on the tasting menu) for your three or four or five courses.

Every single item brought to the table was excellent. The foie gras is absolutely sublime - I'm salivating as I remember it - a very generous portion and expertly prepared. I also ordered frog legs/escargot (not something I can order very many other places!) and the butter-poached lobster. My husband ordered the trio of rabbit, which was absolutely gorgeous (photo attached).

They have one of the most extensive wine lists we've seen, with a great selection from all over the world.

It was a pricey evening, but... you get what you pay for.

Celebrated our anniversary, sat in the back room which made it nice and private. Service was fantastic from valet, host, head server, and other servers. Our dishes were AMAZING. I had the summer tasting menu with wine pairing and my husband chose a 4 course dinner. We celebrate every year at a Michelin Star restaurant and this is definitely at the top of our list. The only downfall was one unisex bathroom. It still was kept clean and smelling nice though;). We will go back for another celebration dinner.

La Folie is an exceptional restaurant. Where you would typically find this class of restaurant to be great on food and sparse o volume, La Folie gives you generous portions of your best tasting and presented dishes. If you are going to La Folie, you have to try the foie gras, the best seared foie gras available in The City, served on a half peach with a peach consomme. The wait service is exceptional (ask for Tre) that can give you suggestions on the best way to enjoy the menu and take full advantage of what Chef is planning that evening and how you can enjoy it even if you have dietary restrictions or allergies.

Had a fantastic birthday celebration for my dad. It was the first time for the 3 of us eating there. The food was fantastic! Only "issue" with the evening is that the dinner was very very long, which is hard to "complain" about seeing how fantastic everything else was. Will go again!

This was a lovely experience. The service was impeccable and correct - not something you see much of in our fast food world. This is an event restaurant, many courses, with many options, expect to spend two hours. The food was exquisite - I enjoyed the Russian caviar, the foie gras, and had the butter poached lobster for my main course. Husband had the corn soup, scallops, and ribeye. Every course was nicely paced with an amuse bouche sprinkled in here and there. The wine list was extensive and I thought very reasonable for the offerings. We were seated in the back room, which is intimate and lovely. We will visit again I am sure. BTW - the bar next door is cozy, the bartenders are very accommodating, they offer great bar snacks and service from the restaurant as well. (We ate there the next evening)

It was a joy to eat in a restaurant where dinner is considered an event. We spent an evening enjoying delicious, well prepared food , waited on by knowledgeable courteous staff, in a quiet environment that allowed us to carry on a conversation amongst the four of us. Though expensive it is not overpriced for the degree of expertise and work that goes into preparing this level of food.

What I loved about this restaurant besides the outstanding food and service is that you could interchange menu items with the tasting menu items. The other great thing about this restaurant was the valet service. Parking in San Francisco can be a real bear, so that extra service is well worth it! The small offerings of a demitasse of chilled FRESH pea soup and a shot glass of a watermelon aperitif rimmed with sugar and spice were a very refreshing surprise. And because it was our anniversary, we were given a menu of our orders signed by the chef! Very thoughtful details that made our experience even more special.

It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for - an amazing culinary experience. We'll be making the drive again.

La Folie is an elegant restaurant that has been around for 29 years. The amazing thing is that it is not dated--it is very relevant with state-of-the-art presentation and imaginative combinations. I don't often use the descriptor "divine" for food but we had gorgeous plates that tasted "divine."
