If you want an exquisite food experience, try La Folie...not easy on the wallet, so this is a once a year treat for us...a perfect special occasion restaurant. We had wine pairings with our four course meals. The waiter lent us his extensive wine knowledge with each pour. He also had a perfect sense of timing, and throughout the entire meal he was non-intrusive and there at the exact right moment.
The food is creative, delicious and beautifully presented without being ostentatious...such food deserves beautiful presentation! I recommend without reservation.
Service and food were fantastic
Absolutely magnificent! Each course was beautiful, seasonal and delicious. Quail stuffed with squab - amazing. La Folie is elegant with impeccable service. It feels as if one has taken a trip to France without the flying time. A very special place, indeed.
What a gem! Although the main course was delayed, it was worth the wait. Our frenched rack of lamb was cooked deliciously perfect “medium rare plus.” Our first courses were equally delicious. The 1er Cru red Burgundy was priced in the ball park. The room is beautifully appointed with rare wood paneling, heavy burgundy drapes and lush upholstered banquets.
An absolutely amazing experience, I would definitely recommend La Folie for a special occasion.
The wait staff were terrific. Every request and need was met. We were well taken care of for almost three hours. The food was masterfully executed and plated. It is a pricy experience but well worth it. I would rate it up with Meadowood and a tad below the French Laundry.
Excellent experience. The food was phenomenal as well as the service
We had the most amazing experience at La Folie. Each course was a delight and the wines were perfectly paired. The service was exceptional and the staff knew everything about every dish we ate. It was a very special experience.
Each item I was served was a taste masterpiece, and the 6 courses were an ode to the flavors of peas, asparagus, celery, and artichokes. The staff was well prepared to provide me with a vegan version of their chef-choice 5-course dinner. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared, with exceptional flavors, interesting plays on textures, and creative presentation. The celery seed soup had lovely, balanced flavors. Incredible morrels were part of the vegetable celebration in the final savory course. The service was attentive, perceptive, and friendly, but not overbearing. The decor takes you back to a mid-90s casual vibe, and was a bit of a mis-match to the quality of the food and service. The music seemed a little dated and out of place as well. Overall, i greatly enjoyed each course, and the wine list was very nice.
Outstanding food and wine service. Masterful cuisine. Duck and squab were works of art. We always dine here when we travel to SF
Excellent food and service! Great for a date night. I think they could do a little decorating. Would definitely go back!!
Love the place as always, definitely a go back!
A lovely restaurant with amazing food. Wonderful staff . The corkage policy is a bit pricey especially considering the price of a meal
Fantastic wine list both menus were outstanding. Service flawless. For a foodie/wine person La Folie is the place.
The appetizers are amazing, however, the main course is a little bit salty to us. Thanks for the chef’s birthday gift to my wife.
Food amazing, service impeccable, atmosphere elegant. Will come again and again.
This was the first time dining in your restaurant and we were impressed by the attentive services and the quality of the food.
La Folie has been our most favorite restaurant in San Francisco in the past decade. The food and wine is superb and the service is always excellent. This time we thank our server Mandy and sommelier Rob. We'll be coming back to you for many more years.
like dining at your own chateau. they were beyond kind and the food is unbelievable. from the chef coming outside—in the rain—to help us with our parking dilemma to the best hostess in the city and the lovely waitstaff, la folie was formal without being stiff and with great warmth. (only one other time has a chef greeted me in the rain & that was last year in sweden at daniel berlin krog.) mixing-and-matching courses across the menus was a delight. the cocktails were outstanding & the food was incomparable, the asparagus soup (available to vegetarians and omnivores alike) & the beef & the frogs legs were standouts. thank you—
Excellent service and great food. Highly recommend you make reservations.
Prix fixe is too much would like the ability to dial it down to 3 courses or ala-carte.
Famed restaurant did not live up to us billing, and our billing. Poor service for the price - over $1,000. Didn’t have a waiter - sommelier filled in. Knowledgeable enough gentleman, but no serious description of dishes for the chefs tasting menu. Washroom was a mess, and quick look at kitchen showed chaos. Disinterested front door staff couldn’t be bothered to arrange for taxi, and when sommelier arranges for one, my wife was advised to jump in it while I was getting ready so taxi wouldn’t run off - couldn’t be bothered to endure driver that there was a tare. Chefs tasting menu and wine pairing were on par with what you expect from a fine dining restaurant but service frankly on par with a take out.
Another amazing experience at La Folie.
Lovely service. They have vegan option which is nice. The food is incredible. 100% recommend
Food is okay, overpriced for Valentines day
$1,000 tab for Valentine's Dinner! I've had good experiences at this restaurant in the past, and am willing to pay for an extraordinary experience. This was nowhere near a Michelin star experience. Ambience was great and cozy, however food and service did not match the reputation or exorbitant dinner tab. While this is still a nice French restaurant, it is no longer special to the average French restaurant in SF. I'd be happier if they reduced their prices to match the deteriorated experience. We felt ripped off.
Good points - Sommelier picked a very nice and good valued wine. Wait staff was friendly and eager to please.
Bad points - While the wait staff was friendly, they were never there at the right times. We constantly waited for things. We sat waiting for a long time before they brought bread and took our order. Server was not paying attention to our table and I had to pour the wine to refill glasses all evening. Food would have been fine for a $400 evening, but not for $1,000. The caviar appetizer and asparagus soup were tasty. The third course cod dish was fine. The main course rib eye steak was tough and chewy. The deserts could have come from Starbucks.
Absolutely not worth it
The food has very little flavor. Prices are CRAZY steep and the service is worse than any regular diner.
Ive been to almost all fine dining/michelin star restaurants— la folie is still one of my very few favorites. So authentically french, and every course worth the penny. The atmosphere is unassumingly elegant. Thank you to chef roland passot and eric our sommelier
A perfect display of what fine dining should be... Chef Roland Passot and staff delivered a stunning culinary experience! This hidden treasure is not to be missed. I will be back...
So amazing! The chef even came out to speak with us and the sommelier was equally amazing!
This was our third visit to La Folie. The first time was great, the second not so good, but thought we'd give it another try, - but were disappointed.
We started off with Champagne, Lepreux-Penet, which was very good.
A pre meal taster/appetizer of mackerel was offensive. To find this in restaurant of this caliber was a bit shocking. Growing up in Norway, which is known for good fish, Mackerel was never eaten in our home, as it was consider cannery fish, which was exported, or processed into animal feed.
We had the Chef's tasting menu without wine paring, but, even though this was a French restaurant, we asked for a bottle of Pinot Grigio or like French wine. The sommelier recommended a French equivalent, which we agreed to. As we did not expect to finish the bottle we asked if we would be permitted to bring the reminder home? “Of course,” the sommelier answered.
The first course of Duck Egg Ravioli was pretty good, and we had it with truffles. No complaints.
At this point we asked for our wine and were told it had been decanted, was airing and waiting for us asking. We found it strange that a white wine would be decanted and needed airing? The wine was then served and to our surprise it was red. We figured this was some French version of an Italian wine, but were a bit confused, but made no fuss. It tasted pretty well and was some kid of cabernet, which we later verified. We were ok with the wine and did not want to make a big deal out of it.
The second course of Butter Poached Lobster was over cooked, difficult to cut and therefore of course hard to chew. Disappointing.
At this point the server came by and said they had made a mistake with the wine. We had been given wine, brought in by another party, who had planned to enjoy it with their meal. We subsequently learned that the wine was brought in by the manager of a St. Helena Winery, and was to have been served to someone they wanted to impress. What a screw up!
We never saw the wine we ordered.
Pretty average, especially considering the price.
Overall - Amazing!
I booked this restaurant in early this year for visitors from Hong Kong on their last night in San Francisco before catch a late night flight back to Asia. I was disappointed to find out California has banned the consumption of Foie Gras 2 weeks ago. I had Foie Gras on my last visit at La Folie and love it very much. Our waitress is attentive and friendly, I enjoyed the rack of Lamb very much and my wife loved the souffle as desert.
Amazing food ❤️
Absolutely wonderful restaurant! The atmosphere was really enjoyable, the service excellent and the food just WOW!
Great way to spend a special day, great food and service!
Nice dinner and service
Food and Deseret are just GREAT! But it’s a bit less flexible as they only provide sets of orders, which is may be much for guests who don’t have that much appetite, but it’s just minor problem.
